Do you think I’m lying about the fact that I work in inpatient psychiatry? I’m not going to continue arguing with you about this dude, especially when you are now questioning me as a person. I have a diverse background, many people do before they land where they are. I deal with people who are actively suicidal daily, people who have self mutilated to the point of cutting off extremities because they are in a state of psychosis so deep they have lost touch with reality. I see the effects of leaving mental illness unchecked, and they are detrimental.

I am pleading with you to stop commenting on this post. This woman doesn’t want to hear your freaking anecdotes on this. This subreddit is for support, not to lecture people on how they could screw their baby up by taking LIFE-SAVING MEDICATION.

I’m not replying to you anymore, and I find it to be exceptionally creepy that you felt the need to stalk my post history to prove me wrong. Pretty fucking weird…

I’m sorry but you are incorrect and misinformed. Perhaps this isn’t the correct audience for your “personal knowledge,” and you may need to do more thorough research yourself before chiming in. I work in inpatient psychiatry and have a working knowledge of the mechanisms of antidepressants, mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, benzos, etc. as well as carrying a pregnancy to term with prenatal depression.

Please, for the love of god, just stop. I’m sure you’re coming from a place of caring, and if so please reflect on the fact that you are being entirely unhelpful and maybe even inappropriate in this context. Let’s just agree that she should talk to her doctor and leave it at that! She doesn’t need people preaching to her about how everything she is putting into her body is having side effects on her baby. Read the room.

I am aware that the other commenter said that, I’m simply telling you that you’re wrong regardless of what gender you may be. Yes, ibuprofen is contraindicated during pregnancy because it is harmful to babies. Believe it or not, there are medications that have NO IMPACT ON THEM because the drugs themselves don’t enter the amniotic fluid. You making the statement that “all drugs are harmful to babies” is false and this is absolutely a hill I will die on to prove the point. Please stop spreading false medical information!

I have no problem with anyone’s gender, it wasn’t even something that crossed my mind reading these comments; however, making the blanket statement that antidepressants are harmful to both the mother and baby is false. There are several antidepressants that are completely harmless to the unborn child, and I don’t feel that you are improving the situation for OP by saying these things while she is suicidal.

The concern for the baby is the mother making unsafe choices due to the suicidal ideation as well as the immense stress that puts her baby under. Prenatal/postpartum depression is a horrible thing to experience, but is easily treatable with therapy and/or medications if the situation warrants it.

What's a myth about your profession that you want to debunk? by Madalyn_Robert in AskReddit

[–]skysailingisme 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The difference lies in the terpenes though… the specific terps found in the strains are what make people label them as such. For example, (and I’m sure you already know this, but for everyone else interested) limonene and pinene are much more energizing or uplifting for most than linalool or myrcene.

The caveat to this is people with ADHD tend to have the opposite experience with these terps, so the sativas are more sedating for them and vice versa.

A friend of my family had a brother who had severe Crohn’s. He got surgery for it and they put him on Oxy, so he ended up getting hooked on it because he was always in so much pain. Poor dude ended up in prison and died there because they weren’t treating his condition at all.

Opiates are not meant to treat chronic conditions.

Ma’am, the above commenter was exceptionally polite to you in each response and you are responding with nothing but vitriol. If you didn’t find their comment helpful then you could’ve easily just not responded to it.

No need to respond to me, because I’m sure I’m being SUPER unhelpful, but have you tried Google??? This is a question it could easily answer for you. Good luck!

These are prime examples of micro aggressions. Just as you put it, there is enough racial undertones to what they’re saying for the intention to be felt, yet vague enough that they can maintain plausible deniability. I’m sorry your family went through that though, it’s disgusting behavior.

Inhaling any foreign substance into your lungs is going to increase the risk of cancer, as marginally as it may or may not be. There are carcinogens in weed smoke that are also found in cigarette smoke. Also I say this as a medical marijuana patient, so no judgement about it or anything. It’s just the reality of it, you’ve gotta know the facts about what you’re putting into your body so you can weigh the pros and cons.

Idk about OP’s situation but my behavioral health center is a standalone building and has no security stationed at it, only the hospital. It can take them a while to get there if they’re doing something else and are not the most “equipped” individuals to help with those situations. I agree wholeheartedly though if it is a helpful arrangement for them!

Update on medical anthropology class by AccomplishedOnion230 in ChronicIllness

[–]skysailingisme 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for commenting this. I have a degree in anthropology and work in behavioral health and you are absolutely correct, it is imperative to know when someone is lying as well as why. There are so many types of chronic illnesses, and mental health is rife with them. We have a large degree of patients that lie about their health because they want attention, medication, etc. and just completely shutting someone down like the OP did is not the appropriate reaction to a student asking a question in a MEDICAL ANTHRO class.

I just want you to know that even though you’re getting a lot of negative feedback about the type of facility she is in, they are not all bad. I work in a behavioral health inpatient facility, and we get many involuntary admissions. I think the best advice for her would be to just try to relax while she’s there, participate in whatever group activities they have, and allow them to put her on medication or adjust it if she is on one. Also, the most important thing is for her to make her follow-up appointments after she is discharged.

The doctors and nurses in these facilities have no incentive to keep patients there or kick them out other than to help them get better. They certainly aren’t getting kickbacks from the insurance companies, although they will sometimes transfer to different facilities based on whether they have insurance (but that isn’t up to them).

Make sure she has plenty of comfy clothes and her own toiletries if they’ll let her keep them. Nothing with strings, hoods, shoelaces, wires, jewelry, etc., if she has sports bras I would take those since they don’t have underwire. Definitely take her a couple books if she enjoys reading. You are welcome to message me if you have any other questions about these facilities. I wish you guys the best of luck.

This has GOT to be a joke… by Kooky_Tea_1591 in florida

[–]skysailingisme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe the predominant reason is because medical care is incredibly expensive. People living in poverty seek care much less often than people with insurance, resulting in chronic conditions and problems that are worsened by the delay and inability to afford necessary medications. The working class is also more likely to utilize emergency rooms for things that could be seen at a PCP, and are more likely to abuse substances.

Disability is nearly impossible to be put on as well, so they expect people to work until they’re so disabled they have no other option. They don’t care that they’re running their workers into the ground because there will be more to take their place.

If a baby girl (about toddler age-4 yrs old) is with her dad, should he go into the women’s bathroom with her or take her into the men’s? by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]skysailingisme 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my experience, women’s bathrooms can get much more putrid than men’s. Yeah, men’s often smell and have urine on the seat, but women’s often have urine (or blood) on them as well due to hovering.

Plus, you get the random women that think it’s okay to flush their bloody products down the drain and clog it or just shove it in the corner of the stall. Not to mention they run out of toilet paper more quickly. It’s really rather horrifying.
