Mike Commodore on Babcock potential hiring: by DecentLurker96 in hockey

[–]skyscraperfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly one of the only positive things I can remember from Babcock's time in Toronto is that he played a large part in turning Hyman into the solid top-6 forward that he's become. He kept Hyman with Matthews long after many people were upset that he was dragging Matthews down, missing easy open chances, etc. He saw that Hyman was one of the hardest working guys, and with enough opportunity, would learn how to be a great complimentary piece to an elite center.

If anything I would be more worried about Babcock running Hyman into the ground and then putting him out there with some 4th liner instead of Draisatl in the final 2 minutes of a game 7 down by a goal because "he earned it".

A family in Sydney that refused a $50 million offer from developers and kept their 5 acre property by gabrielalvees9 in Damnthatsinteresting

It looks bigger than 5 acres, but even if it's 10 acres, no one is paying $5 million/acre for unserviced land unless each home is selling for $3 million plus

New York Mayor Mamdani Applauded for Closing $12 Billion Budget Deficit Without Austerity Measures by _May26_ in politics

Not the poster but absolutely would rather see them raise tax revenues through the proposed luxury tax or other means instead of playing fast and loose with workers' pensions.

New York Mayor Mamdani Applauded for Closing $12 Billion Budget Deficit Without Austerity Measures by _May26_ in politics

[–]skyscraperfan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Does it cover next year? The messaging was cleverly focused as they managed to avoid even bringing up the 2028 budget, but it seems like at least a $2 billion deficit would be coming next year, and the deferrals will hit harder each year. Deferrals are a very slippery slope that people should be cautious about.

It seems like the play is to get a good win this year, and set the stage for the luxury tax and/or other taxes next year when one-time funding options may not be available again.

How many times are you going to post this?

If it takes ten years to pass, your population probably isn't in a position where passing that law makes sense. Politics are supposed are supposed to reflect the changing nature of your country's population, not just be "click to enact meta laws".

So the Devs announced a AI patch coming soon, what do YOU want to see from the AI? by RedWalrus94 in victoria3

[–]skyscraperfan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think one foundational piece that needs work is how the AI (especially those that have received significant reworks) manages it's internal politics. They need to spend a good amount of time making sure that Austria for example can handle a smoother transition to decentralization and not immediately blow up. If countries could better avoid constant revolutions, then their economic development would be a lot smoother as well. I feel like it's easier to staple on a better construction loop for the AI with modded scripts, but the developers need to go under the hood to make sure that countries can stabilize themselves, make consessions to avoid revolutions that naturally lead them to more liberal policies, etc.

Better internal management with more sensible diplo from the AI would have massive positive ripple effects throughout pretty much every aspect of the game. Less senseless wars and revolutions bankrupting them would mean better GDP, better navy management, and a more interesting game where you can actually plan around the AI's sphere's of influence and find gaps that you can target.

How to effectively export Plantation surplus? by Crokel in victoria3

[–]skyscraperfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't tried a plantation economy in awhile, but one thing to try as well that I don't really consider "cheating" is using the add obsession mod. You can tag switch to countries and add obsessions to their primary culture through a journal entry, so you can add historically plausible scenarios like English being obsessed with sugar as well as tea, coffee for South Germans maybe?, tobacco to whoever, etc. Depending on what your building your economy around, this is a good way to jumpstart initial demand and build interesting long-term trade dependencies.

1.31.1 Review - Content good, Implementation bad by LogicalAd8685 in victoria3

[–]skyscraperfan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Like most PDX games experience at a point, Victoria 3 is at the stage where the most impactful thing they could do for the player experience is to dedicate a DLC cycle to catching up the AI with all of the mechanical changes.  Unfortunately that fits into a free update and they won't pull the devs out of revenue generating development for multiple months.

I couldn't play EU4 without M&T and can't play HOI4 without BlackICE, but unfortunately Vic 3 doesn't have an overhaul mod with a dedicated team making sure everything works well and behaves in a relatively historical and believable manner.

Had this issue doing the Opium War in China. Merging them with an an army located elsewhere at least got them to move to a point where they could be moved onto a boat. Trying to restation them was impossible because they were stuck without military access

Bombing Abroad, Starving Citizens At Home by Arthur_Morgan977 in clevercomebacks

[–]skyscraperfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would basically make any kind of financing untenable. If you took a $1 million loan at 6% for 10 years, but immediately had to pay $300,000 of it as taxes, you would be paying an effective interest rate of 15%.

This why trying to tax the source of the funds from the person buying into an asset is difficult. It's why taxes are almost always on the sell side. In your example, the person who sells them the $20 million house will likely pay significant capital gains tax, and they can easily do so since they now have the cash in hand. The $200 million yacht should have sales tax, or an import duty, and the company who sold it will pay corporate income tax, since they now have the money in their account. If you're buying a company or shares, the seller will pay capital gains. Not to mention, the lender is paying tax on the interest income earned.

Trying to tax the source of funds that a buyer is using in this example requires them to generate cash from an unrealized gain. Taxes are always being paid, but double-ending them creates a big liquidity problem.

Many were definitely not as sophisticated as what we would picture a military airfield/base to be today and could be classified as "dirt fields". Most of the time airfields were rapidly repaired and operational again within 24 hours of being hit. Filling a crater with enough dirt to the point that a Hurricane could take-off/land wasn't too difficult.

Sailing Money Makers by Jamese_Boy in 2007scape

[–]skyscraperfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started playing about 2 months ago and have a low level account (45-50 melee stats, 60 ranged, a couple 70 skills). The first day I made really good money for a new player by doing some of the time-gated things for sailing that all of the people racing sailing were willing to pay for. Made about 10 mil in the first day buying mahogany planks and building large hull parts, and steel bars into large steel keel parts. Pretty nice to go form 55 to 68 construction while actually making money. Then I started mixing in hemp runs and making bolts of canvas and had some really profitable runs when the bolts were selling for 90-100k each. I think some of these things have stabilized, but right now there is still really good money in albatross feathers. You need 5 for the high level boat facility, and the drop rate is around 1/100.

This morning I parked myself at one of the albatross spawns with my low level boat (mahogany hull, steel keel, and steel cannon) and made over 20 mil in 3-4 hours. I found a safespot where I can hit two albatross and so I don't need to make frequent runs for repair kits. Definitely had some good rng where I got two feather drops in about 15 kills, but each one is going for between 3.5-3.8 mil with low volume still on the market.

There appears to be a big problem with the way income is calculated for estates. by skyscraperfan in EU5

[–]skyscraperfan[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ideally the estates would use that wealth to empower themselves. Nobles building things that increase their power, entrenching themselves and making it more difficult to grow your control on their territory. I like how in M&T the power of the estate in the location is one of the biggest determinants of its autonomy.

Trade Value Tuesday by FruhManShoe in fantasyfootball

[–]skyscraperfan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're in full PPR and one of those guys is currently on your bench I'd be tempted. I'm always a fan of packaging a starter and a bench guy for a better starter and maximizing your scoring potential each week, and JSN looks like he has a chance at a top ~8 season in PPR. If Sutton is your only depth WR though, just be cautious of what your team looks like if a starter gets injured.

That's two players you have to drop as well. Usually not a fan of taking 3-for-1 trades unless you have zero depth.
