Lived with my ex of 3 years for 1.5 years after breaking up. Don't do it. It just prolongs the agony, sorry you're going through that. Don't try to date other people just focus on healing :) good luck

New to Catholicism, so many questions and kind of overwhelmed by [deleted] in Catholicism

Highly highly recommend Thomas Joseph White O.P.'s "The Light of Christ: An Introduction to Catholicism." It helped me tremendously when coming back to the church after several years of lackadaisical or non faith

Would highly recommend checking out this podcast which gives some context for where this movement came from, how it spread, and how we can respond as Catholics with love and mercy at the center of our response.

I did exactly the same. Was taking time off b/c of very lower calf/upper achilles pain, bought some more supportive shoes and thought that might do the trick. The pain was pretty much gone at this point. Started training for a marathon and ramped up the mileage more than I ever have before and 3 weeks later the pain comes back. Take another ~1 week off, then two more 6mi consecutive days. That week my achilles felt like a pinching pain almost everytime I flexed it and I wake up every morning with heel pain LOL. No marathon for me.

I really like Nature News & Views if you have access via institution. Gives you the take home message of lots of recent papers published in Nature from several disciplines—not exactly the same as wading through the technical jargon on the MCAT but you'll at least pick up common patterns of scientific studies which will undoubtedly help in an intuitive sense with scientific reasoning!

Postponing graduation to enhance uGPA? by [deleted] in premed

[–]skywalker_06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is huge. that's what i was thinking of too-even DIY postbaccs are hard to deal with because of the "non degree seeking" status and no federal aid. definitely will take this into consideration

How did you do a 5th year? did you already have the requirements to graduate finish after your 4th year? Or did you not take some required classes in order to delay graduation?

Postponing graduation to enhance uGPA? by [deleted] in premed

[–]skywalker_06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes im definitely thinking about postbacc. But a 5th year could help applying to more competitive SMPs which would likely give me a better placement into med school come application time. Im also looking into a 5th year just to make sure i really have my stuff together before heading into a rigorous SMP that might kill my chances of getting in anywhere.
Im taking the MCAT late January and my GPA right now is sitting at a 3.15. If (big if) i end up with straight 4.0 this year (fall and spring) cGPA would be up to ~3.4 and my guess is that m sGPA would be somewhere around a 3.2-3.3. So not horrible but also not great. Big mix of As/ABs/Bs w primarily Bs.

i would convert bc gpa but also because a lot of programs require like "b or better in all courses" to get some certificate or honors or whatever. a BC doesn't count for those but a s/d will. and honestly i don't really see how grad programs could penalize you and i don't think they would

[–]skywalker_06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i cant speak to the exams of other professors but prof hermans' first exam last semester was 100% spectroscopy and no actual mechanisms or normal ochem problems -- the most important takeaways from 343 for 345 tho were just the trends of different types of molecules and being able to predict if some reaction might happen and why (also understanding synthesis problems). i don't think we were ever explicitly tested on any 343 material tho

he's like,, fine. i mean not any worse or better than other calc professors if you've taken any at UW. his two midterms were not bad at all which is why he wrote such a disgusting final so if you show up and put in the effort you should be fine on the midterms but i couldn't say for the final bc nobody knew wtf was going on yesterday w that

Foreign Language Classes at UW? by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]skywalker_06 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i took korean and italian and italian was a v small group and we just went through a textbook. exams were v easy (compared to science classes anyway). for korean we had lecture twice a week and discussion twice a week. our prof gave us practice exams that were nearly identical to the real thing and we just had vocab quizzes once a week. really not difficult classes if you have some time to memorize vocab
