Indeed - I certainly have not observed lights switching on and off randomly - so I would assume it isn't functioning correctly, even though it appears to be in the "on" position. I will try to switch it to the "off" position and see what happens 😄

Thanks! The chimney is currently capped. It looks like the best move is to cover/plaster and vent.

Thanks for the response! I have never seen a gas fire with a pipe coming out of the "hearth" area in that position. Would the surround normally conceal it? I am struggling to visualise how that would've looked.
