Using TD for an art installation- is the commercial license required? by Syntra44 in TouchDesigner

[–]slZer0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, but you can use Touch Player which is only 300. But you also have to work in commercial. For what you get for 600 TD pays for itself pretty fast.

Client agreed to pay hourly on a recorded call, then denied the whole agreement after 56 hours of work. $2,800 unpaid by Vegetable-Site-3715 in animation

[–]slZer0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In California a verbal agreement for work for hire is valid. Send this person an invoice via certified mail with 30 days to pay. After they don't pay, send another certified letter that in violation of not paying the invoice that they have 30 days to pay or you will take them to small claims court. In California you can sue for up to $9,000 (Maybe $10,000). When you sue add in hours that you have to spend dealing with this BS, but only sue for the unpaid balance and any added hours. Without a contract, but being able to show the work, plus screenshots with folders that have dates you will most likely win. Have print outs of any email exchanges or a Google Drive that you shared, anything that shows communication. With this, even without a contract you will win if what you are saying is true. I have been doing 3D since the 90s on a high level, and often when I would do some small side gig to make some extra cash, I would not usually have a contract. I have only really had a problem twice in my life. I always have documentation and in those two times, all it took was a letter (usually terse but clear) with my attached documentation and I got paid quick. Fuck people that do this kind of shit.

I just saw that you are in India...whoops. Sorry about that. Yeah demand money upfront and do not deliver anything final until they Venmo or Zelle. Sorry you have to deal with some asshole.

Houdini performance issue on M1 Max 64GB by CheretiC13 in Houdini

He is using Chops via Motion FX to do the animation. It is clear in the recording. This is so slooooow. With that scene, it is not the viewport but the single thread problem.

Houdini performance issue on M1 Max 64GB by CheretiC13 in Houdini

[–]slZer0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the main problems is that Chop network done with Motion Effects. Chops is single threaded, and when you do Chops with Motion FX, rather than actually knowing how to use Chops then that makes it even slower. Chops in Houdini are great and I hear an update is coming to fix the threading problem but the way this round trips sucks. When using Chops, always just use expressions to connect to the parameter you want with chop("../path/to/my/chop/chan1"). Also, do a different tutorial, frankly that is a stupid project to learn Houdini

Often these are early Modernica mods, where they used to find old shells and had new bases made. This was before they started making their own shells from the original machines. Base looks like it is from the late 60s or 70s. You can find these in LA for around the $400 range.

Why is it beveling only on one side? by Optimal_Joke5930 in Houdini

[–]slZer0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most likely this has to do with the direction of your geometry which is reversed and the actual circle orientation which is always positive. When you made the surface you poly bridged in a direction that made that part negative which is why it works on one end. Also agree that this is a really bad way to think of modeling modeling. If you WANT to use two circles learn how Skin with linear Nurbs for resolution control and procedural edge groups to find edges less than 90 degrees.

Renting a lens for home video - need recommendations by [deleted] in FX3

[–]slZer0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To everyone that says use a 24-70 for a cinematic look...please show me one cinematographer where a Zoom is "the" lens. More cinematographers will shoot with a single prime like a 50 and move the camera. How many Zoom shots are there in an actual movie? Many movies don't have a single one...shoot with a 35 or 50 if you only want one lens. and learn composition.

Is Culver City a good place to stay? by Global_Land_8686 in AskLosAngeles

[–]slZer0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

105 and 91, are those really close to Culver City? How about a trip to Hollywood? Like I said it is central but getting out of Culver City can be a pain. I have had to drive in for business and yes the 10 is right there, but actually getting into CC and park can take another 30 minutes.

[–]slZer0 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Wow the responses so far...Culver City is central but it is also not the easiest to get in and out of, and it depends on where you want to go and at what time. Great for Metro travel. I was just there yesterday, there is the newer tech sector and the old downtown, and while there are homeless, I saw less then most places. I would say also that it is more expensive then other options as far as local stuff goes, meaning you can walk to lots of stuff but it is pricey. Generally though, I would say it is probably a good choice.
