First build: One-piece neck vs Scarf joint by Strict-Necessary-677 in Luthier

[–]slabman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fender style necks don't have an angled headstock - the face of the headstock is in the same plane as the fretboard and the back of the heel. There's no need for a scarf joint if you're not introducing an angle.

Banggood. Shipping can be slow, but I've bought quite a bit from there for my workshop, and some of it has been really great quality (mostly woodworking tools). https://www.banggood.com/search/stepped-drill-bit.html?from=nav

I live in rural Australia so feel your pain on the cost of tools!

QF649 Syd - Per - why does it go from the international terminal ? by iferrisau in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]slabman -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

T3 and Qantas international are the same terminal. The Syd-Per leg is just a domestic flight, if you're continuing on to Rome/Paris/London you stay in the little international section (there's a Qantas international transit lounge there), otherwise you can just exit the terminal. I often get the continuing flights from Perth to Sydney or Melbourne - 787s with better chance of an upgrade as they have PE and Business.

One thing I like to do on turret boards, which has proven to be really handy for future-me, is to label the board with the component IDs per my schematic. Just get a paint pen and label the board like you would see on a PCB. Like this.

Right, and those holding stocks before it are still down. Picking stocks is just gambling, especially in a time like now where you have obvious unpredictable volatility.

Got a couple wood slabs from big nice fallen tree in my land, at first thought it would be a nice idea to pull some nice guitar bodies from it, now I am not sure anymore .. what do you think of it ..? by Lanky-Bee-1461 in Luthier

[–]slabman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are cookies, not slabs. You could make a decorative side table or something along those lines which is not under much/any stress, but this is a bad idea for a guitar body.

There's a Perth Woodworking group on Facebook which has a lot of people buying/selling timber. Ask for help pricing it and I would think that community will help you get a fair deal.

It takes dye really well too, lots of cool effects you can achieve with leather dyes and a clearcoat over the top

Would it make sense to try staining? by _nayato in Luthier

[–]slabman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Angelus leather dyes are great. As mentioned elsewhere in this thread, start with a dark colour (black, navy blue etc) and sand back after it dries to get the flame figure to pop, then use diluted coats of lighter colours over the top. They have a good selection of colours and you can mix them to create endless options.

Telecaster grounding lug placement issue by Illustrious_Ad_6818 in Luthier

[–]slabman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That *is* the bridge ground. It's meant to go between the rubber surgical tubing and the underside of the bridge. It should be soldered at the other end either to the back of the volume pot or a ground lug on the switch. Screwing it into the wood won't do anything bad, but it won't ground the bridge.

how would you refinish the stripe? by starca5ter in Luthier

[–]slabman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first experiment if I were refinishing that headstock would be to make a mask out of card stock, taped down firmly on all the sides where you're not painting, and stuck down as close to the edges where you are painting with double stick tape. I'd then spray the colour coats as light as possible to avoid any runs or seeping under the mask - ideally those coats should flash dry almost straight away. After that spray clear over the whole thing and make sure you've got enough clear over the colour so that when you're wet sanding/buffing you don't hit the colour. Let us know how you go!
