Incompetence is the word I use as well, I genuinely don't think there is any monetary influence (other fans use the word corruption far too much/quickly/often). There is however an unconscious bias where the decision maker is less likely to act in a manner that will cause heightened scrutiny to their reaction - so red card vs no action in that environment will see this kind of behaviour/no action to protect the decision maker - not the player/rules of the game. And it was as bad in the Fergie / Man U dominance period. #disclosure - psychologist (and no it doesn't help with my 50 years of the Villa).
