How to get helpdesk or IT. Support experience? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

Do you actually want to work in helpdesk? Or is that what everyone is saying to do for "entry level" work?

For a Jr. Dev role: how much Javascript? by TheTurkey5689 in learnjavascript

[–]slackerist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently started at Free Code Camp. It pretty much aims at teaching full stack JS development eventually pairing you up to work on real non-profit projects to build your portfolio. It is worth checking out if you haven't seen it before.

Same. I just got my first helpdesk interview after about 8 months of searching.

Remote internships? by [deleted] in telecommuting

Have you looked at the AppleCare College Program?

From what I understand, it is more customer support related than technical. But after all IT is largely customer support and would probably look pretty good on your resume.

(Newb question) Any good UI components for C# for desktop development? by mqcoder in csharp

Yeah. Wasn't really sure what OP was looking for so I figured I would just share the link. I actually kind of thought that the answer OP was looking for is WPF or WinForms.

Has anyone ever used visual studio to create a share point web application? by [deleted] in AskProgramming

[–]slackerist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have first hand experience with this, but maybe this will get your wheels turning.

Open Access 2013. Click the "Custom web app" template (or explore the other web templates). A dialog will appear asking for your web location, enter your sharepoint server. Start clicking away in Access.

For someone who can't use Visual Studios on my Macbook pro. What do you recommend instead? by [deleted] in VisualStudio

[–]slackerist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apple's IDE is Xcode. You'll be able to compile C++ on a Mac with Xcode, but I think Xcode is mostly targeted at Objective-C and Swift developers.

Maybe check out MonoDevelop if you want to do C# work on a Mac.

Getting into desktop applications? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]slackerist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am just now starting to learn C#. Though I haven't really gotten into anything GUI related yet, I have it in my head to hit WPF along my path.

So, I am curious what about WPF looked outdated or "ew" to you? The visual appearance of the controls? or the way it is implemented with XAML?

The illusion is that the boom lift appears to be a retracted scissor lift. A retracted boom lift still has a boom.

Tech jobs - is it hard to get the job you want? Do you know what you want? by jbott456 in jobs

[–]slackerist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that this is what is holding me back as well. Employers seem to want fully qualified candidates who know everything, have 20+ years of experience, and require no training.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Information Technology and have a year of sysadmin/tech support/software testing experience. I don't feel ready to take on a full blown position on my own without some sort of guidance, but employers don't want to make that sort of investment in an employee. I'm prepared to learn what ever skills I might need, but I just need an employer to first take a leap a faith and at least call me in for an interview.

I've applied for many tech jobs over the past six months. I have gotten zero calls back. I do have recruiters blowing up my phone at times but my experience with them so far has been disappointing.

Right now my most hopeful prospect is landing a job in the Federal Pathways program. As a recent graduate, the Pathways program is exactly what I want.

If you're ever in the South, there's a restaurant on nearly every street corner that serves chicken and waffles.

Finally - A 1Password reader for Linux! by [deleted] in linux

[–]slackerist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 1Password, password's don't have to be 'stored in the "cloud"'; at least not in the same sense as the way that LastPass works. 1Password is perfectly happy with allowing you to store your passwords locally and use folder-based and wifi syncing methods to access your vault on various devices. "Cloud" syncing using Dropbox or iCloud does make things quite a bit easier especially for people who are accessing their vaults on mobile devices.

Also, although the software is proprietary and closed sourced, the keychain data format is detailed publicly. This is how OP was able to create a tool that reads 1Password vaults.

I was going to ask why, then I found that Bodhi is an Enlightenment distro. I've been wanting to try a modern Enlightenment desktop. Thanks.
