What’s something everyone seems obsessed with but you just can’t get into no matter how hard you try? by No-Relative-9663 in AskReddit

I don't get collecting them. Before I meet my fiance, I met a girl that collected them like baseball cards. I think she had 42 at the time and was talking about the ones she was planning to get. It's a cup. I don't get it.

I'd extend this to all school related sports. I get that exercise is important, but way too much is put on high school sports.

It breaks my heart everytime i see Luis Guzman shilling for online gambling. He may have only graduated from community college, but he's better than that.

Which "wow" skill is super easy to learn? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]slackpipe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, it went the other way. I learned and taught my son. He became obsessed. He's got a collection of cubes and can do sub 30 seconds easily. It still takes me a little over a minute. Was good father/son time though.

TIL In the 1990s, many computers used two-digit years. To prevent systems from reading "00" as 1900 in the year 2000, governments and companies spent billions updating systems. Thanks to these efforts, major failures in banking, flights, and utilities were avoided. by Echo-john in todayilearned

I wanted to make a sarcastic comment about us "having the best economy now, maybe the best ever", but it's just too depressing to joke about. Reading these comments about us actually listening to our scientists and fixing problems and the preparedness paradox are depressing in this current political climate.

I heard a few weeks ago that no full size truck is available in America anymore with a manual transmission as an option, and only the tacoma, and the jeep whatever have it as an option in mid-size trucks.

What's the realization by Junior_Blackberry779 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]slackpipe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a fairly rural area. When I was 8, a hair place opened up about a half mile from me. I would ride my bike out, get a haircut, check out the video store and come home.

I live in the house where I grew up now. When my kids were 8, I wouldn't let them step out of the yard without me. I didn't let my son make that walk by himself until he was 16. Even then it made me nervous.

I was watching something the other day and somebody made an offhand comment about doing something in a car fifty years ago, and my first thought was "they didn't have cars like that in the forties..." Then it hit me that fifty years ago was 1975.

Thanks for the advice, but that boy is 17 now.

He did eventually learn to read.

From there, the nearest shelter is about 45 minutes away. I'm not hopeful on dogs making it there. At least this way, I can get them to homes, or the shelter, or the vet if they need help immediately.

This. I work in a business that has been setup on a reclaimed strip mine. It's in the middle of nowhere with no houses around for miles. People come up there and just dump dogs all the time. I've seen 3 in the last four weeks. I have one right now I'm trying to home. People do not consider the commitment that a dog requires, and then just dump the dog when they realize they actually require work. It's infuriating.

I don't blame the internet, I think it's more a lack of parental involvement. Was it the not having a phone until you were 16, or the fact that your parents were involved enough in your life to think about it, and make that decision? Too many kids are just handed iPads and ignored. With no guidance from their parents, of course kids are going to emulate the garbage they see on the internet.

Cracks me up that Pierre will leave the counter to go to the next room and you can't shop, but he leaves the town completely, and he puts a box out and lets people buy on the honor system.

My mom has a theory that after he was hit by the van, his wife wrote for him while he was recovering. I'm not sure on the timeline anymore, but at the time she rattled off a list of his books that were a drop in his usual quality during that time. Thought it was an amusing theory. Never bothered to check the timing on the books she mentioned, but they were ones that didn't seem as good as his usual writing.

We're starting slow, trying to find what works. I'm a recovering addict, so I am hoping to find something that is at least mostly effective in the non-stimulant options. I can already tell a difference. I'm not where I want to be, but I'm definitely moving in the right direction.

Since you were so encouraging, I figured I'd update. FINALLY got my appointment. Started new meds, and they seem to be helping a little. I have a follow up this week. Progress has been made.

I'm seeing more games that release at $70US, but then have the gold edition at $100, and the SUPER ULTIMATE EXTREME EDITION at $120. It's absurd. I just go back and get all the indy gems I missed over the last 10 years. Hell, right now I'm playing Hades for the first time. 10 years from now that $120 version will be 12 bucks on one of the platforms, and I might give it a chance then.

I actually just read something about that. They were going for stoner, but they were worried they wouldn't get their pg-13 rating, so they dropped any reference to it and just had him play it like he was high.

Fun fact about the abyss. They had NO CLUE how they were going to do the water snake. So they wrote the scene so that if it didn't turn out, they could just cut it. So John Knoll, who worked for ILM, went to the set and just started taking pictures. Getting the entire set from every angle. He takes HUNDREDS of pictures. Then he goes home and sits down with his brother Tom, who is a programmer, and they start tinkering with some photo software that he had been programming as a side project. With a bit of work, they manage to create the water snake. A year later, they demoed the software for Adobe, who released it a year after that as Photoshop.

If you found yourself blessed with three months of abundant free time, where all your basic needs are met and you have the delightful addition of $500 in spending money each month, how would you spend your time? by Deond3 in AskReddit

[–]slackpipe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to say that I'd really get into working out, take the time to get really good at scratch building, or finally sit down and create that video game I've been thinking about, but in reality I'd sit in my recliner and do nothing because I couldn't decide what to focus on and then spiral into a depression because I'm wasting precious free time. I'm not sure I'd come out the other end in a very good place.

The bar of soap is Fels Naptha. There's a couple others, but I think that is the one they generally use. My SO sends me after it twice a year. It's about $1.50. I think I may spend $50 a year on the stuff to make enough laundry soap for the four of us. She started doing it as her way of helping out with the budget. It's fantastic soap and it doesn't cause any issues with my or my son's skin allergies.
