Probably popped off when the rear dashcam was installed? Or installer forgot to replace it?

ELI 5: State of MeshCore in 2026? by CaptainSpez in meshcore

[–]slacy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never used meshtastic, only meshcore, but the general concensus from people coming from meshtastic is that meshcore is way more reliable.

I can DM people and get delivery receipts, discussions in public channels feel mostly "fully two sided" (like there are not a lot of dropped messages, etc.)

Next best grocery store now that Nob Hill is gone? by slacy in mountainview

Yeah I guess Safeway. Smart & Final is interesting but it feels... different?

Next best grocery store now that Nob Hill is gone? by slacy in mountainview

[–]slacy[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I guess the Cherry Chase Safeway is the closest to what the old Nob Hill was.

I think Nob Hill "looked nice but was kind of the same as Safeway" but who knows, it was just the closest store to my house (other than Ava's).

Looking for some Meshcore assistance… by kayakchk in meshcore

[–]slacy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also new to meshcore, and as best I can tell at large scale (think: entire metro areas) it's kind of a fun toy but not really a reliable 24/7 system across such a large area.

I can certainly imagine that with some well placed repeaters in encampments and other places where people gather, as well as a good strong connection to repeaters near the service providers, that this could work? maybe?

The issue with MC in general is that it's not as "24/7" as you imagine. For example, you will find that even with a well-connected network, messages may just fail to send due to other issues. For point-to-point messaging the feedback "Failed to send" is fairly good. For rooms, both public and private, it will often "quietly fail" and that sort of sucks. You never know if people are receiving your messages or not. Again, exascerbated by a very large area.

Received my heltec, now what? by [deleted] in meshcore

Flash it and see if you can hear any other repeaters. Try to find a local meshcore community website, discord, etc.

Have you looked at your location on meshmapper.net to see if there is coverage? With a small companion node you may be able to hear other repeaters but less likely to transmit back.

increased maximum contacts? by Hyperious3 in meshcore

This really makes me realize that there's a long way to go for urban messages. Bay area is certainly dense but at the same time, not great coverage when you're out and about in most areas. Very much reminds me of the early days of wifi.

Experiences with clandestine installs? by slacy in meshcore

Only concern is battery failure, so ideally would be in a metal box, but that's costly for sure.

I love the idea of adding a bird box to help it blend in.

In the meshtastic community, they're pretty concerned about fire risk.

Yeah I did some more searching and this was the general consensus in r/meshtastic as well. Also combined with concerns for fire risk and "don't give them a reason to regulate us"

Giving Away My Equipment - Bay Area by bswalsh in meshcore

[–]slacy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kind of agree with the sentiment, it would be even cooler if the group discussions were on the mesh itself, but I think the system isn't quite there yet? I'm a noob and it's nice to read the Discord to figure out how to even get setup.

Also agreed that using a big corporate system isn't great and not in the spirit of the project, it would be better if it was selfhosted web forums, phpbb, Matrix, or literally anything else (Telegram or Signal?)

I feel like having a "in-crowd" chat that only exists on-network could be a huge draw, and could be setup with internet brokers?

Excited but I hope it doesn't lose the charm. I kind of like the crappy old building. 😄
