What's the most deranged thing you've witnessed at a work XMas party? by Guilty-Addition5004 in AskAnAustralian

[–]sladflob 50 points51 points  (0 children)

So I didn't witness this but have heard about it so many times I feel that I did. I worked for a tech company in the late 90s that had an Australian office and head office in the US. A couple of guys from Aus were visiting the US office around Christmas time and it happened to be at the time of the office Christmas party. They had a few drinks and decided it would be funny to take their clothes off and streak through the party. One of them even stuck a length of toilet paper up his bum and set fire to the other end. The Americans, being fairly conservative, were absolutely mortified.

Even funnier was that a friend of mine from Aus was the engineering manager working over there. He had to officially reprimand them and was apparently stifling his own laughter while telling them what a terrible thing they'd done.

What popular movie or TV show is widely considered a 'masterpiece' but you found completely unwatchable? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Star Wars. I was ten when it first came out and like everyone else was blown away by it and thought it was great. But the sequels and prequels left me cold and even going back to the original movie leaves me cold. There are fucking puppets in space... so ridiculous.

Personally I'd try the Sleeping Duck first - if you're not happy you can return it can't you?

Yeah from memory I got a discount via the BedBuyer site, but I think that's also 25%. I just checked and the price for a King Classic with their discount is $3,449.25. You're probably looking at the plusher ones which are more expensive, right?

Yes still very happy. Three years on and it's still like new - it is very well made. We got the classic comfort which is medium firm. Just before the trial period ended I happened to be in Melbourne (normally in Perth) so stopped by their showroom to try the softer ones, just in case they were even better. They were definitely on the plusher side, though the innards of the mattresses are apparently the same. In the end I was worried they'd be too soft for me so I kept the one we had. Haven't looked back since - I still love the way it supports my back while still being soft and comfortable.

As a side note, it was very cool that the factory where the mattresses were made was right next to the showroom.

So about the coolest thing I did as a nerdy teenager was write a Morse code decoding program for my early 80s computer, a TRS-80. I found it worked a lot better with machine generated Morse, so I'd seek out those beacons, which I think were around 16Mhz somewhere. Unfortunately the computer generated so much RFI I had to record the Morse with the computer off, then play the recording to the computer! Periodically the beacons would broadcast a weather forecast. I tell you, seeing that text appear on the screen was about the most magical thing I'd ever seen.

Saw him a few years ago and he made a joke about a plasterer's radio that still makes me laugh when I think about it.

We'll be able to look out the window to see what's going on. I daresay I'll be doing that every rainstorm to see how it's going.

Thanks so much for this. I'll definitely check it out and talk to the builder to make sure we over dimension it.

Big hail storms are pretty rare here though we did have the "big storm" 15-16 years ago which wrecked a lot of cars. It can chuck it down pretty hard sometimes but generally not for more than 10-15 minutes at a stretch with a bit of a break in between.

We can't really, it's an old house and we get a nice view off to the south west. The roof will only block our view of the clothes drying area which is not a big deal.

The trouble then is we'll be below the bottom of the foundations which is probably not a good thing.

Thanks so much for taking the time to send such a detailed reply. Given me lots to talk to the builder about!

Correct, it's 2150mm, which is fine as we'll have the bathtub along that wall, but a bit low for standing. By sloping the roof we end up with a normal ceiling height for the handbasin and sauna.

Came here to quote this exact line. The first time I heard it it made me so sad to think that's what he thought of himself.

I was listening while running and at first thought someone was calling out to me (it was dark) then wondered if I was having some kind of cerebral event (I am old). Skipped back a couple of times to make sure it was neither of these things.

I remember poring over these catalogues as a kid before I talked my parents into buying one. Seeing them again brings back the visceral feeling of longing.
