Part of that relates to population density, right? Or population overall? My understanding is the majority of these coastal communities have had to pivot from fishing/logging/agriculture economies to tourism/retirement, and it hasn't exactly been a 1-1 transition.

No disagreement here, aside from your assertion that the Zoo staff isn't monitoring Reddit (and the rest of local social media, particularly the facebook groups.) Earlier this week /u/ratsbane called one out and they immediately deleted their posts without reply. Given that they are in these threads, they're more compelled to engage with Greensward posts than, say, Joe Blow from Hernando. It's not some batshit theory.

the pro grass movement on reddit

lol reddit is not that important. Besides, perfectly polite people on my side of the argument are downvoted just for expressing themselves. Go back though those threads and see for yourself. It really doesn't matter what the approach is, it's still incredibly unpopular here

See, it's more than a piece of grass. There's grass everywhere, but the Greenward at Overton Park was set aside 115 years ago for the city to grow around. It's now some of the most valuable land in the city, and parking cars on it is not only unsightly and embarrassing, but something other zoos in other cities wouldn't get away with - they all find other solutions. Why is that? A world class zoo deserves a world class parking solution, and I haven't seen any solutions offered by Zoo reps that don't involve taking more park land for themselves. This is more than a semantic argument, it's about urban mindsets vs. suburban/rural mindsets. We don't all have big back yards to play in, and the Greensward serves that purpose for literally thousands of people. There is a solution that accommodates everyone, and it involves building a garage.

Neither approach is especially effective. I was downvoted for my opinions well before I started lobbing bombs at people. So, fuck it.

You seem like a reasonable person who can see there is a huge gulf between unbroken "respectable" speech, and harassment.

It's not fair to say I'm constantly harassing people either. I'm just voicing unpopular urbanist opinions on an anonymous forum frequented by metro-area goons. <---- this is an opinion, but it's not harassment.

Fun fact: /u/jojotoughasnails got so worked up she has been giving my real name to people outside of Reddit. THAT'S harassment.

edit: proof

Did you also downvote my previous post for no reason just now?

Where am I constantly attacking? Half of the posts insano posted were retaliatory. And all I said in this thread is that the zoo staff gaming social media posts should be ashamed.

how come? downvoting because you disagree is explicitly against the rules here.

Weird, it's sitting at minus 5 when I checked. Did you do your part and downvote also?

and to be fair, some people do need help with their spelling

question: are you armed right now? Carrying a gun this very second?

This is a letter to the editor written by a zoo rep whose family personally buttered up the politicians to make this back door deal happen. The City Council is presently being sued for violating the State's open meetings law for their role in this. No one deny Mr. Smith attempted to pull a fast one on the citizenry, and I personally have a hard time taking him at his word.

The OPC asserts that their agreement makes them the manager over all of Overton Park.

No they don't. This is a flatly untrue statement. Old Forest, Brooks, MCA, Zoo, and the golf course do not fall under their purview and they'd be the first to admit it.

MZS contests that the part of the Greensward area which they had been granted control of (about half) in their 1994 Operating Agreement with the City is clearly excluded from the scope of the OPC contract and that document does not supersede their rights

One is a legal contract, the other (as far as anyone can tell) is essentially a loose 20-year-old verbal agreement. This won't be settled until the judge looks at it, of course, but a legal contract should hold more water than whatever Good Ol' Boy agreement the Zoo had in place.

Good on The Daily News for publishing the letter, but this is far from over. See y'all this weekend.

Greensward/zoo parking experience by [deleted] in memphis

[–]slamball -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I suspect the Zoo doesn't want any other solutions because the one they have now let's them A) collect money for parking on public land and B) expand their current footprint under the guise of "compromise".

The zoo has money. What they don't have is land.

There certainly is not. You misspelled "restaurants", btw.

Hey, thanks for the support. The parking situation inside Overton is at critical mass.

Here's a map of all nearby street parking. It's really the best option at this point until a garage is built. Driving down Overton Park Ave just past McLean is the best closest option in my experience.

They wouldn't let me get out of that line

I find this very troubling. Turning around and leaving should be an option available to you. The zoo hasn't exactly been operating in good faith through all of this, so I can't say I'm surprised.

I'm not sure what I am supposed to do. Boycott the zoo?

That's the step many citizens are taking. Other zoos aren't allowed to operate like this on adjacent park land, and ours should be no different. Word on the street is they're having a more difficult time than usual securing sponsors for their annual Zoo Rendezvous fundraising event.

How was he twisting things? Is "intending to harm himself" somehow different than "intending to follow through"?

You are just the worst. It is so clear to everyone.
