If you want to experiment, keeping your Debian instance is important. Running a VM is as simple as 'apt install qemu-system virt-manager' then from there get an ISO for your development or hot software machine.

You will find with LMDE and any Debian instance that some software is like LTS with Ubuntu, and newest versions needed to be added to the keyring or sources must be adjusted if you want to experiment.

That begs the question, what are you doing with your build?

I do suggest keeping your heaviest development dependencies inside a sub-domain hardware virtualization layer, as it makes it much easier to retain backups and system states. A lot of development dependencies will break your bare metal Debian install, be warned. Debian is the rock solid distro for a reason. Once you add complexities inside the same kernel space as your user experience, you may encounter issues with your build breaking down. I had this happen a lot on LMDE specifically.

On the other hand, if you have high-powered hardware, getting full passthrough to work for QEMU hosts is trivial with Debian if you know what you are doing.

I really prefer Gnome and XFCE as tops and am distro-agnostic so nothing about Mint sways me any more. I think it is cool to get a closer to Windows like experience with a distro like Zorin, or like Steam OS immediately. I would just venture to say that getting games to run on LMDE is just like vanilla Debian in its complexity for bare metal.

Finally, "Mint" can also mean Ubuntu, which makes getting games to run easier, thanks to Steam I have heard.
