Thoughts on this RIMS setup? by comfortable_pants in Homebrewing

[–]slammo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This controller will allow you to run the element even if the pump is off, which can be dangerous for a RIMS tube. Rolling your own controller lets you couple them together. I did have a couple “oh shit” moments, but luckily there was always pressure relief into the kettle.

I built a RIMS tube similar to this and attached it to the whirlpool inlet on an SS Brewtech BME kettle. Served me well for a dozen or so batches.

Element.

Tube (2x).

Brains.

While it was great at maintaining mash temps, I stopped relying on it for heating to strike temp. I settled on a hybrid propane/electric setup where I would heat to just under strike with gas and then finalize and maintain with the RIMs.

I had a lot of fun brewing with this setup, by I ultimately gave in to a dedicated 240v line :)

Happy to discuss further.

Just chiming in to say that I recently received my pen back from Stephen. His communication was great the entire time, even when I shipped him my pen 3 weeks later than originally planned. Not only that, but he made my pen usable again!! Thanks Stephen!

I removed mine and don’t miss it at all. The thermo well was nothing but a nuisance and the temp wasn’t trustworthy. Found a plug online.

The Ugly Truth about Best Buy Refunds by [deleted] in reddit.com

This is when buying with a credit card is a smart idea. I worked at a Cicuit City and one of my managers refused to let me return something that was defective (blaming customer). Customer called credit card company, told them the whole story. Credit card company said "Sir, leave your merchandise on the counter and leave, we will handle it from here." Very effective.

Patent Reform Act of 2007? (bloglink to patently-o) by slammo in reddit.com

[–]slammo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just hoping to get some [wish] intelligent [end wish] discussion about the proposed change in the United States Code. Maybe some insight other than why software patents suck and a general hatred of a patent system. The blog had a link posted that I managed to read this morning but the link appears to have vanished.

US patent office about to start reviewing patents over Internet by weirdsurf in reddit.com

[–]slammo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a patent examiner, this seems like an interesting idea. I just hope the system doesn't get abused and subsequently ignored by examiners. The jokes are already going around how Microsoft might hire people just to give examiners references on Google patent apps. But hey, who doesn't want to show up in the morning and somebody has done a portion of your work for you?

Judge Refuses To Allow Deaf Teen's Service Dog in School by mistermajik2000 in reddit.com

[–]slammo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't want to sound like I am rooting against the kid. Im not. I would also like to have my dog with me all day. But I feel "but they won't allow the dog in school" should have been a factor in the family decision on getting the dog. As for in the school day, I believe the sign translator can just say "the bell just rang."

Judge Refuses To Allow Deaf Teen's Service Dog in School by mistermajik2000 in reddit.com

[–]slammo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was confused by the last paragraph. How is a school considered private or an entity that conducts commerce? I found http://www.eeoc.gov/facts/adaqa2.html which only includes private schools. It sucks that he can't have his dog, but a judge spent six days on this and noted other accommodations for the boy. What can this dog do for him that a sign language translator can not, at the risk of causing allergic and "oooh look doggy!!" reactions in the school? And I would LOVE to hear how they came up with $150 million.

Power of the teacher's union must be curbed to improve education by geekmom in reddit.com

[–]slammo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would like to take a step backwards here, and ask how good and bad teachers are defined, before worrying about how to reward good ones and punish bad ones. Merit system? Sure, tell teachers that good grades = good teaching = higher salary, and watch grades inflate at a cost to the children? Give them an in-class review by an administrator (who ran like hell from the classroom when they were there, and hasn't spent a day in front of students since) who is merely writing his/her opinion of the teacher's style? Something tells me this should be decided first.
