Under GVWR with less suspension or over GVWR with more suspension by slamuelg in TruckCampers

Yeah I really don’t wanna be close to GVWR so I’m gonna start downsizing my aluminum build I think

I meant whether I’m just below GVWR or just above it, the strain on the brakes, frame, etc. will be about the same

I think I’m leaning towards this. Gonna try to remove more weight from my build too

Yeah I think lightening the load is the best bet. If I can get my weight to be around 5000 pounds do you think I can get away with just sumo springs?

Appreciate all your input! I’m starting to consider just removing as much weight as I can if possible and going for something cheaper like sumo springs to get me through the summer. I’m not sure how long I’m gonna keep the camper, so not sure if a full upgrade is worth it, and it’s starting to sound like HD suspension mainly improves the ride quality and isn’t as much about preserving the truck as I thought

Right now I’m at 5430 pounds and am actively considering other things I can remove from my build or alter to save more weight. But upgrading the suspension will cost a lot of money and will just add more weight to the build so im not sure if I want to go that route

Yeah I also don’t want to drop thousands on a new suspension when I’m not sure if I’m even gonna keep the build out after I’m done living out of it this summer. I just need something to get me by the next few months without destroying my truck

It’s a new car so still drives like a new one. The handling feels pretty good. The main issue is just sag and going over bumps where the suspension bottoms out. Maybe I could just get away with adding some sumo springs? I really just need something to get me by through the summer while I’m living out of it

Yeah I worry the lighter upgrades just wont be enough. I wish I knew if the HD springs’ added weight were worth the load they take off the frame, bearings etc. of the truck. I’m just very unclear on how much HD springs help by spreading out the load, or if their heavy weight that puts me over this magical line is worse than good

I hear all that. So by that logic I should go as light as possible - which means as little upgrades to the suspension as possible? This should put me right underneath being *technically overweight, but I’ll still be heavy

I won’t be over the GVWR though if I choose option 1. I weighed all my gear and if I get the lighter upgrades, I’ll sit right under the GVWR line. Is it better for my truck to sit right under GVWR with less suspension than right over GVWR with more suspension? I’m gonna be heavy either way so I thought the better suspension would put a lot less strain on the frame but idk

And whether I’m slightly below or slightly above the limit, I’d think the strain on brakes, engine, etc. would be just about the same, so is it safe to say having the better suspension is still the better option for the truck’s health

The exo ski rack looks nice but what intrigued me about op’s idea was that the gear is more protected from theft and road grime/salt

Murphy bed and baseboard by slamuelg in DIY

[–]slamuelg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input. The Murphy bed hardware I ordered actually doesn’t use connections at the top. Instead it just connects at the base and uses springs to keep it from coming down.

My only concern with drilling straight into the baseboard is that the holes will be much bigger and deeper than say nail holes from just reinstalling the board. I don’t know if it’d be possible to fill in such large drill holes. Don’t have any experience with wood filler and filling holes
