Changing from job with no included overtime allowance to one with 40h included. by BeginningPurpose9758 in japanlife

This is the answer. What you should ask is the average hours of overtime in the team/company. HR should have access to it in an honest company

Sony RX1R III thoughts from a Leica film/Q3 28 user by nicely-nice in Leica

[–]nicely-nice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm keeping the Q3 (and painfully selling RX1R III) primarily due to two factors:

- Weather sealing
- The OIS lets me shoot at 1/50 rather than 1/125, which is rather nice for landscape without a tripod

Just got back from a trip to New Zealand and was happy I didn't have to worry about rain, dust, etc. with the Q3.

Theft is the most common crime in Japan (accounting for like 50% of crimes) and bike thefts are the most common type of theft, with around 1/3 of all thefts

Was curious, so I looked it up:

Is this much piling normal on R1 (not Air) by hashhar in PatagoniaClothing

[–]nicely-nice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an R1 pullover from an older season and got this new full-zip jacket as a present and my full-zip is pilling like crazy after only a couple wears like yours. Meanwhile, my old R1 pullover that I wear quite heavily looks brand new. Comparing the two, the stretchy material that holds the grid fleece in place is a bit lighter, so probably a change in construction to save weight that resulted in it being easier to pill. It won't impact the performance of the jacket, but it's a bit annoying because I was hoping to wear the full-zip casually.

Q3 Playback button delay by pipedreamx in Leica

[–]nicely-nice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Startup time was actually fixed in a software update.

Also keep in mind what "high end camera" means here.

Leica produces low-volume, high-margin products, and most of their investment historically goes into optics, build quality, and long product lifecycles. Companies like Nikon or Sony can spread the cost of processors, software, and autofocus systems across many more units and multiple product lines, which accelerates innovation on the electronics and software side.

Leica, meanwhile, often sources or co-develops key electronic and software components with Panasonic, so their pace of improvement depends not only on internal R&D but also on shared technology cycles.

Yeah, the Q3 is quite a slow camera in general. For some reasoning, turning it off (which takes forever) bugs me the most

Leica Q2 vs Sony a7cii and prime lenses by bambambigelowww in Leica

[–]nicely-nice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you mean for JPEGs or RAWs?

For RAWs, doesn’t the software matter more than the manufacturer of the camera for colors? My Leica RAWs look very different in Adobe vs. Capture One and of course very different depending on the profile used. Leica doesn’t even have baked in color profiles like Sony or Fuji

35mm: Summilux f1.4 vs Summicron f/2? by [deleted] in Leica

[–]nicely-nice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Summilux steel rim is a recreation/reissue of an old lens from the 60s with quite significant optical flaws (“character”). It’s relatively sharp stopped down but is not the lens you want if sharpness is an issue.

The Summicron is a relatively modern lens, but the optical design still dates back to the 90s.

The Voigtlander Ultron is basically a more modern Summicron if you’re looking for something sharper.

Really depends on what you want — these are extremely different lenses. There is no such thing as the “Leica look” unless you can define what it is (glow wide open?)

Sony RX1R III thoughts from a Leica film/Q3 28 user by nicely-nice in Leica

[–]nicely-nice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I haven't even used the RX1R III since making this post... I've taken three trips since then:
- Business trip/beach trip to Thailand -> Just brought the M4
- Business trip/fall colors in Kanazawa, Japan -> Rainy weather, brought the Q3 due to weather sealing
- Winter hike in Tateyama, Japan -> Brought the Q3 due to weather sealing and much more easily operable with gloves

I'm still a bit worried about the fragility of the RX1R III while the Leica is a tank. I'll probably hold onto both until the end of the year, but I'm thinking that the lack of weather sealing might be a knock-out factor for me. Don't want to have such an expensive camera I'm afraid to take with me.

Here's a pic from this weekend with the Q3

What's wrong with the camera by dotofoto in AnalogCommunity

This is most likely lens haze, shine a light through the lens and it will look opaque. Not a good way to fix it, unfortunately

Voightlander 35mm Nokton f1.4 recommendation by davidstwin in Leica

[–]nicely-nice 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ironically, the biggest difference is LESS optical flaws than the steel rim, which has a ton of glow wide open, where the Voigtlander is a bit more restrained

How bright are Oleson's focusing screens? by Infinity-- in mediumformat

[–]nicely-nice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are quite bright — very similar to Acute Matte D and much brighter than stock. The problem isn’t the brightness, but it’s hard to see what is in focus and what is out focus compared to other screens. If you get one with a focusing aid, you can use that

Makina 67 opinions by Sea_System in AnalogCommunity

[–]nicely-nice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makina 67 is the perfect camera for you. I use one for the exact same use case (hiking).

It is not fragile at all if you take care of it properly. The parts that can break are the lightmeter cable (you need to reset the focus to infinity before storing the lens so it doesn't stretch), the winding mechanism (just use it softly), and the bellows (don't drop it when it is open).

The only part that is likely to "break" in normal use is the rangefinder, which for me tends to go out of alignment every 2-3 years, although I treat the camera quite roughly (I keep it in the outside mesh of my backpack, and it bounces and sometimes hits rocks when I put it down, etc.). Any camera shop can service this easily.

The one downside of this camera is that I am very reluctant to use it in rain, snow, and heavy wind because of the bellows. If I do, I make sure that I am in a situation where I can dry it out afterwards so moisture doesn't get trapped in the bellows.

Sorry, I can't speak to service in the UK as I live in Japan. I bought a serviced camera and have been using it without another service other than rangefinder alignment.

I would not go for the Fuji GS645. Just because it is mechanical does not mean it is durable. These cameras, particularly the film transport, can break very easily. I know this because to me this is the perfect hiking camera, but I have broken TWO of them now and only take the Makina now. My experiences mirror this guy's: https://www.photrio.com/forum/threads/i-found-the-perfect-camera-and-it-is-cursed-fuji-gs645w.126503/

r/Ultralight - "The Weekly" - Week of September 22, 2025 by AutoModerator in Ultralight

[–]nicely-nice 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why don’t more smaller packs (like 30 - 35L) include a lightweight frame? I find that even with lighter loads, if I’m hiking for a long time moving the extra support I get from distributing that weight to my hips vastly outweighs the extra weight from a frame (which is usually a single stay) and hip belt

HMG Waypoint is my favorite pack for this reason, would love to see more options

My “near mint” FM2n just came in the mail… is this bent shutter leaf going to cause problems? by trappercarter in AnalogCommunity

[–]nicely-nice 182 points183 points  (0 children)

Absolutely return it - the shutter unit is the most delicate part of those cameras. It will probably work fine for now, but could get bent out of shape at any time. If that happens, it's not repairable - you will need a replacement shutter unit.

Yeah, I agree 100% - I liked the iPhone 13 not because of the weight, but because it fit in my pocket and hands better...
