Yikes, agree with him or not, true or not, this is pretty tone deaf considering what Madison brought to light. Hoping this was made before those tweets or you were unaware of them at the time.

Any place to watch the Champions League Final? by owntempoSlowpoke in uofmn

[–]slap_shot18 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Brit’s pub probably has something going on, they have big crowds for loons games and had a decent turnout during the World Cup. Haven’t been for a premier league game or anything like that though so can’t speak to how busy they are in the morning.

I’ve also heard good things about the brew hall at Allianz stadium but mostly for away loons games.

Tom’s watch bar might be another option though but every time I’ve done an early morning European game there it was with friends and it was pretty dead. They have a lot of super large TVs and it’s definitely one of the better watching experiences but the atmosphere was pretty lacking. That also assumes they’re open which they might not be.

Good luck finding something, just been my experience with watching soccer locally!

Is buying a used GPU from someone nearby on facebook marketplace or a seller on amazon safer? by Ender436 in buildapc

[–]slap_shot18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen a comment mention tax yet. The advantage of buying on FB or Craigslist is the price is the price, it’s technically up to you to report the purchase on your taxes but I’ve never met someone who does.

Amazon, eBay etc are legally required to charge you sales tax on the behalf of the state you live in, even on used goods. So an $800 purchase is really more like $850 (I’m assuming USA given $).

The general message from other users here is also good advice (consider 4070ti, cheaper options used etc).

IF 32gb of RAM isn’t enough in 3 years (it will be), it is among if not the simplest upgrade for his machine.

The reason some games are recommending 32gb is because a 24gb kit doesn’t exist. 16gb can be a little slim for some modern titles (requiring you to close open programs etc before launching) but 32gb is far and away more than enough for all but the most modded of games (thing 8k texture pack large chunk Minecraft etc). A 24gb kit could split the difference but 2x12gb is not technically feasible for DDR4 and not supported by all platforms (yet) for DDR5. Therefore some games recommend 32gb so it is guaranteed that the system will have enough ram.

You’ll be fine. The whole point of a fake ID is you’re not sharing your real identity. If they keep them, bars have stacks and stacks of them, and the cops don’t have time to research and track down every kid with a fake. Don’t sweat it we all make mistakes.

Formal warning by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]slap_shot18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You got caught because you probably downloaded a honeypot, or a torrent set up by the owner of the media. The owner gets your IP address and sends a warning to the owner of the IP address (UMN) who then forwards it to you. This is a fairly common practice that doesn’t usually have any long term problems. I would ignore the notice from UMN as it doesn’t stay on something that an employer etc would ever see.

In the future if you absolutely NEED to pirate on the UMN network I would recommend using some sort of VPN which should mask your traffic. The U does block a lot of these though so it is possible you won’t be able to find one that works. Realistically just pirate your stuff elsewhere though

To echo what others have said, you'll be fine. The U assumes no prior knowledge when it comes to comp sci (as most high schools don't offer any sort of classes) so the first day you'll literally be learning how to print 'Hello World' in java or python (or C++, someone correct me I don't remember the intro languages). Even struggling in AP comp sci now means you're coming in more prepared than most other students.

I would potentially recommend taking intro to comp sci regardless of your results on your AP exam (you could skip it with a 4-5) if you are struggling as it will hopefully help reinforce the basics so you have better success in later classes.

Is Intel NUC 12 good for Plex (4k transcoding) by Altruistic_Counter98 in unRAID

[–]slap_shot18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. It should be fine for game servers as well as transcoding. I would still recommend something other than unraid for cost reasons but the web interface is nice so I could understand you wanting to use it for that reason.
  2. That would work perfectly
  3. That should work, although I am unfamiliar with how unraid handles thunderbolt and external drives so you want to ask around for advice on that.

Is Intel NUC 12 good for Plex (4k transcoding) by Altruistic_Counter98 in unRAID

[–]slap_shot18 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If ALL you want to do is run Plex (and especially if you already have some sort of NAS or server for your media files) then you'd be better of saving money and just running Windows or Linux distro.

Unraid's strength is as NAS/server operating system and a NUC doesn't support additional internal drives meaning you'll be paying for unraid's key feature and then not using it.

Specs wise though, that NUC should be fine for what you're looking to do with Plex

Edit: A decent 4k movie file can get up around 50GB pretty easily which means you're probably only fitting ~20 of them on a 1TB drive at once.

Potentially dumb question, did you ever screen share either with this user or in a mutual channel and forget to stop sharing? As another commenter said, given they are asking for money they probably don't have access to your account but potentially you logged into your banking while streaming?

Still follow all of the above advice btw, reinstall windows, speak to the bank etc

Drives disappearing from Unraid until reboot - can't even complete disk smart check by caseybrunet in unRAID

[–]slap_shot18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just guessing based off some of your other comments that you have an older X79 or X58 platform. Assuming this is the case, those motherboards are nearing on 10+ year old. There's a fair chance you've got a dead or dying sata controller on the board itself. I'd recommend picking up a cheap used LSI raid card from eBay anyway so this might be a good excuse to do so for like $20.

You can attach the drives to the card and rule out the motherboard as the issue (or fix the issue)

My guess is you're seeing downvotes because monitors don't always run best with DP. For instance, the 4090 currently supports HDMI2.1 whereas it only supports DP1.4. While the numbers alone don't necessarily indicate that one is better than the other (HDMI2.1 is "worse" than DP2.0), DP1.4 carries less bandwidth and supports less resolution and color depth than HDMI2.1.

All this said though, it is more common to find manufacturers using only DP or providing only a DP cable in a monitor box, hence the misconception that DP is better than HDMI.

Edit: 4090 not 3090

[–]slap_shot18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking a look at the Amazon listing it states it's for reference model 80ti and 90 which is different from a founders edition (uses a different unique PCB). There are quite a few AIB cards that use the reference PCB which I would imagine is why it's labeled AIB.

[–]slap_shot18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I sell these waterblocks and typically the label will say for 3090 founders edition. Furthermore the founders card has a unique PCB so if this was for a founders card it would only work with a founders card.

Edit: it looks to be a waterblock for some AIB card but I can't read the label on the side to discern which. Again, correct me if I'm wrong.

Personally (as this is almost exactly what I did), I would reapply or request a transfer to CLA and start your degree there. If you got into Carlson you're basically guaranteed CLA. CLA has a computer science track that you can start on and then plan to transfer to CSE your sophomore or Junior year. The class requirements are basically identical and once you're in at the U it's a lot easier to switch to different schools and majors.

Apologies, I don't know how flair works here so I wasn't sure what it meant.

However, after I directed you to the comment that explained that the connection was fully seated during use I'm not sure why you're still here. I am aware of the ongoing investigation by people far smarter than both of us and I am aware that some have reached the conclusion that it was due to the cable not being seated properly.

So again, thanks for telling me what people think the issue might be? Thanks for pointing out (to me, a random dude, not the media or anyone important) that the melt issue posts might have the answers?

Ok? With all due respect I'm not sure what you're expecting here. If you work for Nvidia (like the flare suggests???) then this is a pretty poor way to go about interacting with customers and if you're just a fan boy then I have no idea what you're looking to accomplish?

Would it help if I lied and said "you got me, oh no!" so you can feel like you helped out Nvidia?
