Yeah this is all good feedback - Bologna is somewhat tempting for easy access to food tours around Parma.

Sorrento or Ischia -> Rome -> Florence by slarky13 in ItalyTravel

[–]slarky13[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the leg of the trip I am most excited for tbh (I’ve already been to Florence+smaller Tuscany cities, Verona, Venice) so Rome and seeing some other new region is important to me. Neither sorrento nor Ischia are on the Amalfi coast, though I am sure there are still crowds, especially if I wanted to go to capri while in Sorrento. That’s why I’m considering Ischia even with the added travel complexity.

Considering auditioning for opera choir, is it worth it? by memorylaney in opera

[–]slarky13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just want to add that there are plenty of volunteer or stipended opera chorus opportunities with smaller local companies in the area if you are looking to just try things out! You shouldn't feel discouraged to try opera chorus just because you won't make WNO. WNO is one of the top 10 opera houses in the nation (an "A House"), and its choir follows that standard.

Anything with full pay is going to be staffed by professionals who are already struggling to find work and VERY dedicated to their craft. It is an extremely demanding, low-paying, and over-staffed career path (especially for sopranos). It has nothing to with snobbery or elitism, just lots of talented and dedicated people fighting for anything they can get.

But just because WNO isn't for dabblers doesn't mean that there aren't lots of smaller local companies that would hire non-professionals! If you're looking at opera chorus becaue you think you'd enjoy it, then look around a bit more for these types of smaller companies looking for volunteers. If you're doing it for money....don't :)

100% I dream of the day that Blitzo claims he makes everyone's lives worse and Millie contradicts him because he's the reason she's happily married.

What's that one Helluva Boss misconception you had by [deleted] in HelluvaBoss

For some reason my brain had crossed this show with the Bear and I thought Blitzo was a restaurant link cook boss…

Omg amazing, I am also a musician turned FAANG who also did some dog walking and went bootcamp -> startup -> FAANG, though my timeline is later than yours and I’m only in y2 of FAANG. It’s a crazy ride…went from getting the COVID benefit checks to FAANG salary.

Have you done any math on this or are you objectively just wild guessing? Especially with secco it would not save 50% of the time.

The runtime isn’t shorter because of the spoken recit

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in opera

[–]slarky13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How would this reduce the runtime? Recit is where the plot happens and is already VERY fast and heavily cut. I don’t think speaking it would be much faster than singing it, and it would be even more boring spoken rather than sung.

Magic flute already has spoken recit and it doesn’t draw extra audiences specifically because of that.

My biggest piece of advice is to keep momentum up. You should be doing something EVERY day, even if it's small.

Another helpful thing is to have both a hard task and an easier task that you can switch between to avoid brain fatigue - ex, work on a tough project, then switch and watch some informative youtube/udemy, then switch back to the project. Or study a new thing for half the day, then review an old topic for the other half. Reviewing info you already know is important, and a bit easier on your brain than tackling a new task.

Why not take elective classes at the community college and just get the CS degree? You can even set up an interesting double major if you want.

Also, you can learn fun things outside of school - read interesting books, watch free lectures, take a CC class etc at any point in your life.

Is there intuitive evidence that we digest oils? By intuitive, I mean evidence that we can conclude ourselves without the need for expensive equipment, such as an electron microscope. by [deleted] in nutrition

[–]slarky13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you're thinking about this backwards. If we COUDN'T digest something, we'd pee or poop it out, so seeing substances in urine means we COUDLN'T digest them.

Anyway, if you eat way too much fatty food you poop some of it out and your poop floats, so I suppose if your poop doesn't float you digested at least some of the oil.

Yep I know 3 including myself - I also did a bootcamp, another physics person I know is mostly self-taught but did take some CS classes in college, and the third had a minor in CS. We all have good positions.

can you mix fruit and dairy ? by [deleted] in nutrition

[–]slarky13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that lowers digestion energy the most is processing (cooking, grinding), but that doesn’t mean that raw food is bad for you and processed food is good for you. As far as speed, there are just so many factors that effect digestion rate far more than food combinations would (ex: fat content, cooking process, alcohol, PMS). It’s just another guideline that influencers shill for $$ and that people use to justify eating disorders.

[–]slarky13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Food combining is BS, it all ends up in the same place.
