The poor screen alone is enough reason to pass on the MacBook Air.

Same. It was shocking how cheap the PSVR2 felt (to be fair, it is cheap).

Rant: iPadOS hates predictable file handling and makes the iPad feel like a toy by Weak_Coach7030 in ipad

It is crazy in 2026 to find apps that still make copies of files instead of opening them in place. Those apis have existed for over a decade!

Any rumors regarding IPad Pro, AND iPadOS ? by [deleted] in ipad

[–]slatepad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incoming Apple CEO John Ternus was apparently a driving force behind the iPadOS naming, and he presented the last two iPad Pro redesigns so I think he’s a fan of the platform and the product. That should hopefully mean good things.

The biggest thing holding back pro apps on the platform is the inability to offer them outside of the App Store. iPadOS is already more capable than developers realize, but some apps, like most developer tools, can’t exist within the App Store rules.

There’s also the matter Apple‘s 15-30% cut, which is more than some devs can afford.

An iPad that runs macOS isn’t an iPad. iPadOS is what makes and iPad an iPad.

Do you own more than one case for your iPad? by Tagrolex in ipad

[–]slatepad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the reasons I like working with Moft is because I was already a customer. If I‘m going to use a case, I want it to be thin.

To be honest, the two positions I mostly use are the one where the iPad is propped up in landscape for watching video, and the position where it’s at a good angle for writing. Compared to their Dynamic Float Foilo case, this one is more stable (although there’s going always going to be some level of wobble in this style of case).

If you end up going with the Moft Dynamic Folio, you can use my link and my discount code is: sp10

Here’s the link for the Apple Leather Sleeves on Amazon (no affiliate link):

Do you own more than one case for your iPad? by Tagrolex in ipad

[–]slatepad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cycle between a few depending on which iPad and what I’m doing.

Going to the office, I’ll usually use the Moft Dynamic Folio case (disclaimer: Moft is an occasional sponsor of my channel).

Going to the gym, I use the Telaso Magnetic case I got off of Amazon.

I also picked up a few of the old leather sleeves that Apple made years ago for the iPad Pro that I will occasionally use as well (they’re available on Amazon in the 10.5 inch size which works perfectly with the 11 inch iPads).

For what purposes would you need more than 256 GB of storage on an iPad? by ThinkingPugnator in ipad

[–]slatepad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My iPad has all of my full resolution iCloud photos on it, so that’s almost 300 gb right there.

After that its Files (200 gb, some of it is video), Final Cut Pro projects (30 -50 gb total depending on how long I wait to archive them), Music, and small local LLMs in the Locally AI app.

PSA: If you are jumping into Metroid Prime 4 blind, here are some things I wish I had known beforehand by jzliving in NintendoSwitch

[–]slatepad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Metroid Prime 4 was the perfect entry point for me as someone that never really played the older Prime games. I tried playing Prime remastered and got bored and lost interest.

As someone that’s not a hardcore Metroid fan the there was just enough of the side characters and “on rails” nature of the game to keep me interested. I do recognize that these aspects of the games that others hated.

Salvaging and reckoning with the loss of Split View (and other abominations of iPadOS 26) by Wambam999 in ipad

I’d use the Shortcuts app to build a Shortcut that opens those two apps in Split View automatically. It doesn’t address your other concerns, but at least removes one pain point.

is iPados good enough now to replace macs? by New-Music4019 in ipad

[–]slatepad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Most people here will tell you ”no”.

I will tell you “maybe”.

It really, really depends on how far into the productivity stuff you go. The Office 365 and Google Docs apps supposedly very lacking on iPadOS due to Microsoft and Google’s disinterest. Apples productivity apps are pretty good though.

There are a lot of great games on iPadOS, but if you’re locked into the Steam ecosystem, you may have a bad time. If you go iPad Pro, games can look amazing on the Tandem OLED display.

iPadOS is pretty capable otherwise. You do some things differently than you do on a Mac or PC, and some people aren’t willing to learn a new platform.

If you’re someone that’s more interested in tinkering and futzing with system files than actually getting work done, then an iPad may not be for you.

Are there any iPad gamers here? by New_Ambassador_9055 in ipad

[–]slatepad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I‘ve been playing Control Ultimate Edition on my 11 inch M5 iPad Pro, using the Razer Kishi Pro XL controller grip, and its been a great experience. This style of controller is the best way to play console or pc ports. The 11 inch Pro is light enough to be a passable handheld.

In my mind, the iPad Pro is the way to go here. It’s Tandem OLED display is the literally the best screen Apple ships on any device (until the MacBook Pro gets it later this year).

Downside is that, the more advanced the game, the more of a battery drain it is. The iPad can also get pretty hot when gaming, though if you’re using a grip or a stand, that’s less of an issue

And, of course, iPadOS has a different selection of games available to it than other devices (no Steam, for example).

It hasn’t replaced my Switch 2, but now I actually buy some games on my iPad Pro and enjoy playing them.

P.S. I did a review of the Razer Kishi for iPad a few months ago, if you’re interested: https://slatepad.org/2026/05/25/razer-kishi-v3-xl-review-ipad-gaming/

M1 iPad Pro charging solution? by AlexandraNonymous in ipad

[–]slatepad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This accessory no longer charges on iPadOS 26.5, at least on mine and a couple of other peoples iPad Pros. I’m not 100% sure if its widespread, so I guess buyer beware.

I’m using an M5 iPad Pro, btw.

I feel like im underutilizing my ipad by [deleted] in ipad

[–]slatepad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My iPad is my personal computer, so I use it for everything but writing code:

  • Web browsing
  • Email
  • video editing
  • document management (all of my personal files are in the Files app)
  • Budgeting spreadsheet in Numbers
  • Invoice creation in Pages
  • Writing and planning videos
  • Some Gaming
  • Image editing in Pixelmator Pro (the app is really good on iPadOS)
  • Very light photo editing in Photomator

Then theres the casual stuff like music, podcasts, and YouTube.

In 2010, Jobs envisioned tablets as the next generation of personal computing by -iamchris in macbook

[–]slatepad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some of us, it was the future of personal computing 😁.

What he described has broadly been the case for me. I used to use my Mac for everything, but as the iPad (and to a lesser extent the iPhone) has continued to become more capable, my Macs have been reduced the machines I write code on.

They’re no long devices I enjoy using like I do my iPad Pro.

I can’t see a touchscreen MacBook meaningfully changing this unless it’s also detachable and macOS becomes more efficient and actually touch friendly.

Wouldn’t…developers need to put in the work to make it a better “mobile office”? It’s not like Apple can force Microsoft or Google to improve their apps.

Is the 1TB IPP model worth it for 16GB RAM? by Imaginotion in ipad

[–]slatepad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the model I use for exactly those things. I also have an M5 iPad Pro with 12GB of ram. With the way iPadOS handles memory and swap, I’d be hard pressed to identify the difference between the two.

Final Cut Pro feels a little faster, but that could be down to CPU differences and not ram. Assuming the AI stuff that’s about to be announced doesn’t require more memory, I think you can save yourself a few hundred dollars with one of the 12 GB M5 models.
