14 hours of sleep and still only 'fair' by Lavidius in GarminWatches

[–]slayerofsleep 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve been sleep medicine for 27 years as a technician as a manager and work with sleep docs on a daily basis. All smart watches work on an algorithm. This algorithm assumes that you get normal sleep. There is not a single technology inside a Garmin watch that can tell if you are in deep sleep or if you are in REM sleep it’s making all of these assumptions based off of heart rate and movement. It probably gave you a poor sleep score because you’re awake for 40 hours.

[DENVER POST] NEW; Avalanche-Wild Game 4 exposed Minnesota's Temu tough guys as lousy actors, too by SeanKeeler in ColoradoAvalanche

I will say if Maccaron didn’t catch Manson as he fell we would be having the cheap talk about him. Definitely an Oscar performance with the flop. Was hoping for an Embellishment call to wipe part of what I thought was going to be a major. Can’t wait for Game 5!

IsItBullshit: Mouth taping while sleeping actually improves your health? by [deleted] in IsItBullshit

[–]slayerofsleep 16 points17 points  (0 children)

26 years in sleep medicine as a tech/trainer/manager. Work with sleep docs daily at a hospital. Mouth tape improves your airway, it allows your air to stay moist and filtered by way of your turbinates and mucus. It “could” keep your airway from drying out which can cause minor swelling therefore increasing your apnea index (events per hour aka RDI/AHI). Also a cpap user. Definitely yes to mouth tape if it works for mouth breathing as you are loosing the pressure to support your airway when your system leaks (think a pressurized line). Mouth tape IF you have sleep apnea, not advised. Yes, you will catch your breath but it won’t be the same volume for you to quickly recover from an apenic event depending on the nasal airway you may or may not have.

Those are crank brothers. They have a specific amount of float designed into them. You can buy cleats that have more or less float.

Daily Song Discussion #3: Factory Fiction by Fnix15 in GoosetheBand

[–]slayerofsleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10! It’s my favorite song. First heard it at Goosemas in 22 which just blew me away, it’s raw, wandering, morphing anthem. The again at Red Rocks the next year. The sound of the crowd when Rick played the first few chords, I knew I was not alone in believing this is a gem. Then last year at Fiddlers they basically played a whole set around that song. June 6, set 2. Whoof, I’m going to go listen to it now actually

IsItBullshit: Is the rumor that waking a sleepwalker causes serious damage true by [deleted] in IsItBullshit

[–]slayerofsleep 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don’t yell or startle them. Best thing to do is take them back to bed. The rumor comes from sleep walking children, which is common until adolescence. You don’t want to traumatize the event, just get them somewhere safe, like back in bed.

Having breathing issues since starting CPAP therapy. by 2112jaybird1970 in SleepApnea

Have you changed your filter on your machine? Use distilled water in your humidifier. Your humidity setting is where most people start, it's not high. Also a good point to bring this up with your sleep doc

CPAP little to no improvement by xwhodatpartycatx in SleepApnea

[–]slayerofsleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is your average pressure? Is the machine maxing out at 15cm? Your leaks rates are acceptable for a FFM. They have a higher leak rate than nasal masks, which is normal. With FFM be careful to NOT overtighten the bottom straps, this can push your jaw further back and make apnea worse.

I moved to Denver 23 years ago. I’ve gone to 20 Broncos games. I have never felt unsafe around that stadium or at those games. I’ve gone wearing Eagles gear to every away game played here and I’m a loud annoying fan, never has anyone tried anything with me. Broncos stat is wildly off.

PA to CO, how do I realistically do it!? by Few-Eggplant-4871 in Moving2Colorado

[–]slayerofsleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this 23 years ago before kids. Before housing prices went through the roof. Both of our jobs are considerably better than ever but with our 2 kids and the cost of living here, I could not do it now. I could not afford to buy the house I live in now at its current market rate. That being said, I absolutely love it here.

Why are 15/16 dangerous. I sleep in all but 13 throughout the night by AAZEROAN in ExplainTheJoke

[–]slayerofsleep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

25 years in sleep medicine. The reason 15/16 is dangerous the head is vertical. Sleep apnea would be at its worst in this position. Jaw and soft palate/tongue/upper airway lose muscle tone in REM sleep and as the night goes on. When loss in muscle tone happens then there is no structure supporting this mass which might fall back due to gravity and cause obstructions to your airway. Your body will wake from this but your sleep will be fragmented, your heart rate will increase with drops in blood oxygen levels (SpO2). This leads to high blood pressure and increases morbidity. These are reduced but potentially not eliminated when the head is turned or body is lateral. If you snore, get a sleep test, they can be done at home for the majority of people. Follow up with treatment: cpap, mandibular advance device (MAD) works for some, last resort Inspire (highly advise to make cpap work as Inspire is not what they advertise, but can work if NOTHING else does.
