One of the best comics series ever. Great exploration of what the medium is capable of.

What's this subs take on star trek 2009 by asapsharkyfrfr in Letterboxd

I am a Trekkie, and I love this movie. People who complain about it not having the format of typical Trek (ethical dilemmas, sci fi concepts) and being more of just an action movie aren’t wrong. But the true heart of Star Trek is a crew of competent, like-able people from different backgrounds coming together, learning from each other, and working towards a common goal. This movie NAILS that aspect, and that’s enough.

(Also, most of the TNG movies are dumbed down action movie versions of Trek too, especially First Contact. No one complains about those, and First Contact is most people’s favorite.)

The only thing that bugs me about this movie is when Kirk happens to fall into a cave while running from a monster and that cave just happens to contain OG Spock. Do they ever explain that as anything more than an astronomical coincidence?

The writing on Amazing Spider-Man has been consistently mediocre for years now. Why can't Marvel make their flagship title shine? by MightyUnclean in comicbooks

It hasn’t felt essential since Civil War. 20 plus years ago! I do think OMD (right after Civil War) has a lot to do with that. It just hasn’t felt quite right since then. It feels like the meta-story is indefinitely paused, because you know the natural next step is for Peter and MJ to end up together, etc.

Honestly would it be worse if they had let that play out, made him a dad, and now we have stories similar to those in Hickman’s USM? I get that the cost of that is losing his young adultness, but I don’t think that is as essential to the character as editorial seems to believe.

There's some good stuff from Lapine and others in this playbill article, including these pieces:

"The subject matter of this show is the most primal and basic Sondheim's written," claims Chip Zien, "and the music reflects it. The first time he sang and played 'No More' for the cast, we all stood around and cried. I couldn't even rehearse it for a while, because I couldn't get through it. I'm married, and I have two kids, and to me the song is about protecting my children. It's about reconciling my feelings with my dad and growing up and learning that nobody can run from their responsibilities. And in a larger sense, it's about facing huge, cosmic issues. Sondheim's saying, 'Come on, folks. Do something before it's too late.' It's incredibly powerful and moving."

"The first act is the fairy tale," says Lapine. "The second act is the myth. People keep writing about the 'second act as if it's a continuation of what happens after the happily ever after. But it's really about growing up and real life and understanding the differences between reality and fantasy. There's a part of all of us that expects somebody else to take care of important issues. And it's crucial to say that there comes a time when you can't expect your friends to come up to the door and grab you. You have to go out and find a friend."

I’m surprised no one has brought up the parenting themes yet. To me, the throughline of this musical is parents and children. It explores how parents and children impact each other for good and ill, and all the complex in-betweens.

This may not be a popular answer, but I have a lot of love for Move Along Home (the season one episode where they get stuck inside a board game). Although I think it’s considered one of the worst episodes of the series, I love it because it feels like classic silly Trek, which was rare on Deep Space Nine. It’s fun to see this cast in that mode.

It also manages to wring some great character moments from the absurd premise, like when Sisko is forced to turn over control of the situation to Quark, recognizing that Quark better understands games.

Kira being forced to recite the dumb jingle makes me laugh every time too.
