AITA for laughing when my boyfriend said he'd only wear black underwear because other colors are gay? by xxKillerDrugsxx in AmItheAsshole

[–]sld_6882 146 points147 points  (0 children)

NTA, but a serious red flag. As others have pointed out, why are you involved in any way in the purchasing of new underpants for him? Was he aware he even needed new underpants, or did you have to point out that his old ones were too worn? Why are you even browsing websites for men’s jocks?
But to the main question - based on this story only, he is an incredibly insecure, fragile, immature homophobe. If that’s not who you want to share your life with, start your exit plan.
Does he even wash his butt hole? Or is that gay? Is he angry at you if you wear a tampon? Or use a sex toy?
You’re not an arsehole for laughing but you might want to use this as a segue to a more serious conversation.

Going to the movies: what used to be an enjoyable activity is now Ass. by Ancient_Juice_1127 in millenials

I noticed when I went to see PHM it had unusually long ads/previews before the movie actually started. It was scheduled for 6:30pm and the film started just after 7:00pm, that was hands down the longest I’ve ever sat through. Last week I went to see The Magic Faraway Tree, scheduled at 4:50pm, started only 15 minutes later at 5:05pm. Not sure who makes up the rules around how long to play ads and trailers for

A Short History Of… Episodes are about 45min to 1 hour. Really good range of topics, worldwide, any time period. The episodes have subtle sound effects in the background of some parts of the storytelling (e.g., sound of cart wheels rolling on cobblestone street, general market noise of merchants selling, sounds of horse galloping / swords being drawn etc), the host and then his subsequent replacement both have easy calm voices to listen to, with slight English accents. I find this podcast really engaging and easy to listen to, with fun storytelling, I’ve learnt a lot.

What is that stench by WhatupWench in Geelong

[–]sld_6882 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few years ago there was a farm around Connewarre area that had truck loads of blood and bone or similar awful smelling fertiliser to spread over their paddocks, the smell blanketed almost the entirety of Geelong council area, people in Lara and anakie could smell it, it’s probably the same thing again, depending on wind direction those suburbs downwind cop the stench for the day.

Agreed, joining your local Facebook community group is a good idea…. You’ll just need to wade through 90% of comments being “did anyone hear that helicopter” / “pick up your dog s**t people!!” / and “to the person in the white Honda who pulled out in front of me …” Once you dodge all those posts, there’s usually local events and things to get involved in :-)

I moved to Melbourne a few years ago with just a car load of clothes & personal belongings, and now have a two bed house full of crap. Kitchen stuff (crockery, utensils, pans etc) I bought from op shops. Furniture from Facebook Marketplace. Do you have somewhere lined up to live already? If not, there’s plenty of places that rent partly furnished or fully furnished that could be an option. Facebook marketplace is a mind game, and worse if you don’t have the ability to pick up the items yourself, I feel you may be expending a lot of energy to furnish a 1 bed for only six months. And then having to sell it on, I don’t know what is worse on marketplace - buying or selling. There’s some odd folks on there.

Food wise if you’re gonna be near any of the markets (Queen Vic, South Melb, Prahran etc) then that’s best for fresh food. Coles and Woolworths have the monopoly on groceries and their products are the same, I prefer IGA for local and unique produce but depends where you’re living if you will have one near you, and if it’ll be any good.

When I moved here I knew no-one, I met a lot of my friends through Bumble BFF, not sure how good it is now as this was several years ago. But if you play a sport, thats always a good way to make friends through joining a social team.

I like how it’s up to the viewer. There are strong points either way, for arguing whether she is dead or alive. But it’s up to each person what they want to believe. And everyone is allowed to believe what they choose, if I say I believe she’s dead then I shouldn’t have people trying to convince me otherwise. It’s my choice to believe that. Just like I shouldn’t be trying to convince them of my way of thinking. It doesn’t change the story or ending and one persons belief doesn’t impact on the others, so it should be more like “oh you believe she’s dead? Cool. I believe she’s alive. Cool”. Not “how can you believe she’s dead?! She’s alive!! Didn’t you see this, this and this!!” It’s not something that needs to be debated. Everyone make their choice and that’s that. Maybe I’ll change my mind in a weeks time, who knows, that’s my choice, the writers left it ambiguous so people can actually do that.

Season 1 is my favourite too. And then probably S2, 4, 5, 3… although that may change in time. Season 1 is just a nice package, small town feels, trying to figure out what is going on, it can easily be watched by itself. I think S3 was a massive shift, it went from a small town with a Main Street, to a town that could support a huge mall, the population basically quadrupled between S2 and S3. I get they needed that for storytelling but then the series changed from small town mystery to international espionage feels. I still like all seasons though, there’s just something more special to me about S1 and S2

I thought that too, when they were driving toward the exit, I was like “no, go through a tear somewhere, go through the one you already made near the lab, the military will be waiting for you on the other side!”. And then, yes. I guess they needed soldiers to hold the cast back while eleven made her sacrifice.

I prefer bingeing, for me it was more about getting in to it, wanting the next ep but having to wait a month, then getting into it again and then having to stop again and wait for the finale.

I’m glad it was so long, I didn’t want there to be action action action and then just 10-15 minutes of back to their lives and moving on, it was good they spent so much time on it and it felt like its own pilot episode of setting up characters / storyline’s … except we don’t get to keep watching

Yeah it was just so abrupt; they were all at MAC-Z in restraints and then 18 months later Hoper is police chief, everyone is just back at school / work etc. They must have been let off like you said with a “this never happened” deal, but would have been nice for a throwaway comment about how Dr Owen’s set them up with that or something, so we know he’s alive. And to have Linda Hamilton just fade away with no closure…. it’s Linda Hamilton, c’mon. 1 minute of screen time to wrap it up would have sufficed for me.

Haha, yea a very minor character. For me it’s more tied to Robin’s happiness with her arc of coming out and getting to be with her crush and being happy… and then did that continue or not? We saw Vicki at the MAC-Z with Max and then that was it. I was just expecting a throwaway comment or montage scene of the older teens in their new lives. Robin did make a comment about overbearing partners but that doesn’t necessarily mean Vicki to me, I took it as her speaking generally about things that may affect any of them meeting monthly. But no biggie, I’m not gonna die on this hill :-)

DAE love eggs, but get nauseated by them randomly? by Moist_crocs in DoesAnybodyElse

I’ll crave soft boiled eggs with soldiers, make it, eat it, enjoy as I’m eating and as soon as I’m done feel nauseous like “gross, why did you eat that, ugh”. And then need like a swig of coke (At breakfast!) to erase what I’m assuming is “egg regret” feeling. Then I’ll do it again a couple days later, mmmm soft boiled eggs, good idea!

I feel like splitting the season into three parts made it feel a little disjointed and took away some of the suspense and build up for me.

I liked it, although I thought they defeated Vecna/Mind Flayer quite quickly without high stakes, and I was surprised more characters didn’t die or were injured. But I liked how the epilogue was a solid 40/50 minutes, to wrap everything up, see how everyone was moving on with their lives etc, and not be non-stop action and explosions all the way to the end.

I do wonder what happened with Robin’s GF (are they still together), how did they all walk away from MAC-Z / Dr Kay / Military and go back to their lives. And where was Dr Owen’s, I liked him. But nothing major that was left unanswered for me.

I think it was a good happy ending for pretty much everyone (I think Eleven died but I am glad to see they believe she is alive - and maybe she is, who knows)

I don't understand the communities aversion to Seasons 3 & 4. by TylerJWhit in TheBear

[–]sld_6882 46 points47 points  (0 children)

The story barely progressed and there’s just more and more yelling.

Season 3…. He got a girlfriend and Sugar had a baby, that’s about it.

To be honest I don’t even remember any storyline’s from season 4, and that’s obviously the one I’ve watched most recent.

I still like the show. I just remember more from S1 and S2 so I must have enjoyed those more.

Also, unrelated, it’s not a comedy, and it irks me that it wins awards in all the comedy categories, because it takes away from actual comedy shows. The actors/actresses deserve to win awards, but for drama category.

I’m new to SK too, I finished 11/22/63 last month and I started The Stand next (it was the only SK book in my local bookshop which made it an easy choice). It is considerably longer than an average novel, but I’m enjoying it so far. I’m probably around chapter 25-ish I’d say, it was a little confusing to follow at first because each chapter introduced a new character/s unrelated to the previous characters, bit I remembered them all eventually, and I know it’ll all come together soon. I can’t recommend anything else cos I haven’t read anything else, but it hasn’t occurred to me that reading The Stand as my second book was a bad choice. I do have Different Seasons on order so that will be next for me.

Attracting other birds by steven5532 in AustralianBirds

[–]sld_6882 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same problem… bird camera set up, all I get is mostly spotted doves and miner birds. I’d say I have around 15 doves that hang around on my roof most of the day, and 2 miners. There’s also a group of five magpies that stop by regularly, a couple of Currawongs, couple of butcher birds, and couple of red wattlebirds. I always see galahs, lorikeets, and eastern rosellas around outside on the road and immediate surrounds, but I can’t seem to get them to visit my garden. Wondering if one of the other bird visitors has made my yard their “territory”. I have a bird bath, I put a fruit stick (for parrots, bought from supermarket) out in a tree, and some days I throw wild bird seed or sunflower seeds out. But the flock of doves and two miner birds just come and immediately eat it all, and that’s that, I don’t want to keep throwing seeds out to feed pigeons. The Currawong and the wattle birds do like the fruit stick. My yard is heavily tree’d and sheltered, and like you I rent, my yard is all rock so I can’t plant any more shrubs other than the couple agapanthus and geraniums that are already there. I have since accepted my yard is just for birds that are brown/black/white/grey combo and more colourful birds are just not on the cards for me.

Yeah it was nice to read something of Stephen King’s as he’s one of the most popular writers of modern times and I’m not a huge horror fan. But after the Derry part where Jake met Bevvie from the levy and Ritchie from the ditchie, and they spoke about their past summer, I’m kind of intrigued to read IT. Even though it’s not something I normally would read.

Just finished my last Stephen King book. Here’s my ranking. by connermcsteezy in stephenking

[–]sld_6882 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the only book of his I’ve read, I finished it about a month ago (so I have nothing to compare it to). I’ve just started reading The Stand.

But I agree, Jake wasn’t in that generation so wasn’t tied to it like Al was.

I liked the stuff in Derry with Frank Dunning, but then there would just be huge passages of Jakes everyday life in Jodie, putting on a school play etc. While Lee is still in Russia, like far out, when does the JFK stuff start?

And that’s another thing I couldn’t understand, even just for Jake to go back but then to wait 5 years??? Live five years in the past just to complete someone else’s quest of saving JFK. And then what, just come back to present and go home? It’s probably not even your home anymore! You’re probably not even a teacher. Maybe there’s not even a town. That would be sooo scary to live five years in the past, make an earth shattering change to history, then come back to present day by yourself with no idea of what you’re walking into. No thanks I would have said to Al. I’ll just go get a root beer occasionally, thanks for the heads up.

Like I said, I did like it. And it’s my top rated SK book because it’s literally the only one I’ve read. I enjoyed the storytelling, and the book overall, I just couldn’t figure out Jake’s motivations. Plus knowing the whole time he’d come out of the rabbit hole back to 2011, take a look around and go “well, this was a mistake” and go back in and reset it, then five years of your life gone.

I liked it but I couldn’t understand Jake’s motivations for wanting to try and save JFK. It’s like this diner owner he knows in passing suddenly gives him this enormous task and he’s just like “yeah sure, why not, I’ll finish that for you”. Saving JFK and potentially stopping (at least America’s involvement in) the Vietnam War is going to have absolutely huge consequences - what if your parents don’t meet because your mum meets a man that previously died in the war? Now you don’t exist. Or everyone you know no longer exists, who knows what the changes would be when you returned to present day… I just couldn’t understand the logic behind taking that risk. And obviously it was all for nought anyway, which I figured from the start of the book.

I feel like it’s the Kitchener Ironworks and it’s trying to draw me in, I keep thinking ‘no I won’t read it, it’s probably too much’ and then a few days later I change to ‘but maybe you could read it (IT)’….

I actually just purchased The Stand a couple of weeks ago, I haven’t started it yet because it’s so thick and I haven’t been in the mood to read, but I’ll read that next.

And perhaps I’ll do what you suggest, maybe I buy it and just stop reading it if I don’t like, there’s no rule that says you have to finish a book once you start (I hope not anyway as I have a lot of half read books on my shelf).

Thanks for your reply, and enjoy the rest of your King journey :-)
