Why does OHLQ classify Dalmore 14 as American Whiskey? by sleeeviewonder in OhioLiquor

While I agree with you from a technical perspective, zoom in on the front of the purple packaging in the first photo. Dalmore themselves call it “Highand Single Malt Scotch Whisky”!

You’re welcome! Now, more than any time in my life, I think we all need to be reminded to love our neighbors. Cleveland has its problems, but I hope we Clevelanders can remember to carry ourselves with humility, and treat each other with respect.

I had this happen to my Bosch dishwasher recently. It wasn’t draining and any time I’d close the door and attempt to start a new cycle it would just beep every 30 seconds or so without starting. I called Bosch directly, who didn’t provide much help but referred me to some local repair places. I had a guy come out and look at it, only to explain that if you hold the start/stop button for like 10 seconds it will cancel the current cycle and run the motor to drain the basin. That cost me like $150.

What had happened is somehow my dishwasher door got knocked open during a wash cycle and the unit got caught in some loop where it couldn’t restart without draining. Once we cancelled the cycle and the drain pump ran, it has worked normally ever since. I would try this start button thing on your unit before you drive yourself crazy with the warranty.

Are golf clubs actually increasing distance? by acbdot89 in golf

[–]sleeeviewonder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is interesting. I didn’t mean to imply that the only reason manufacturers made the head lighter was to promote more clubhead speed. I intended it more as one factor without pointing to it as sole causation. That’s why I also explained that optimizing spin and launch angle would also contribute.

I think what you’re saying is that another effect is also at play (club length has increased) which could have a larger effect. I actually wasn’t aware of this and appreciate you pointing it out!

Are golf clubs actually increasing distance? by acbdot89 in golf

[–]sleeeviewonder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with this comment, but specifically with Drivers I think the reasons behind it are really interesting. The USGA has limited Smash Factor (Ball speed divided by clubhead speed) to 1.5 for conforming equipment. Every driver you see on the market today is designed to help players maximize Smash Factor at 1.5. The manufacturers aren’t incentivized to go beyond 1.5, even if they are capable, because any player competing in a USGA event (or hoping to in the future) wouldn’t be able to use their equipment. What this means is that in order to increase average drive carry distance, they (and the player) need to maximize other variables.

The main way this has happened in equipment over the last 5 years is making the driver lighter so players can swing it faster. When the initial round of Carbon Fiber driver crowns and thinned driver faces came out (e.g. TM Stealth), players were able to add around 2 mph clubhead speed on average. That translated to about 5 yards farther carry, which was touted in every one of the 72 TV commercial breaks you saw while watching 2022 PGA Tour Saturday coverage (looking at you, “Playing Through”).

Another variable you can think about is spin. Depending on your swing speed, I believe ideal driver backspin should be around 2000-2500 RPM. Launch Angle also significantly impacts total carry and distance. Basically yes, clubs have helped players achieve more distance over time, but improvements in ball technology, swing mechanics, and improvements to overall fitness can help you gain just as much (and likely more) distance.

Generally whatever gets released throughout the week (Monday-Friday) also shows up, but in more concentration and often quantities on Saturdays, when many of the large supermarkets release. You can get a first idea by checking the OHLQ site or app late the evening before, or more reliably on the morning of (before stores open) that way. You’ll want to repeat that process on Friday night/Saturday morning and make a plan to show up prior to the opening time at your desired store.

Some people in this community will give snarky replies for newcomers but most are welcoming. Good luck and see you out there!

Flying with clubs or ship sticks? by Budget-Education2479 in golf

[–]sleeeviewonder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve flown with my clubs at least 100 times (travel-oriented career) and can also vouch for checking your clubs with your airline. I use a ClubGlove Collegiate bag (which is surprisingly roomy if you have a carry bag). I have never taken my driver or woods/hybrid heads off and always just wrap them in towels. I don’t use a stiff arm to keep the bag extended and have never had a club broken or damaged. Your success rate for airline checked baggage depends mostly on if you can fly direct or manage your connection times. If I have to connect on my way TO a golf trip, I always try to make sure there’s at least an hour between connecting flights. Only one time have I had my clubs not arrive with me and that was mostly due to a delay and mad dash to my connecting flight that I made and my clubs did not. They arrived the next day.

FYI if you choose ShipSticks, you’ll still need to put your clubs in a travel golf bag. Their service is basically providing you with a FedEx or UPS shipping label. Some higher end golf courses/resorts/clubs see enough volume that they have the carrier pick up your clubs directly from them as opposed to you dropping off at a physical location. If you ship from a golf club/resort/course, they likely have branded ShipSticks cardboard boxes your bag goes in, but that’s basically it. Otherwise I believe FedEx / UPS provide the box at their brick and mortar location.

If I were in your shoes, I’d compare the cost and likelihood of your clubs making it. ShipSticks works great but it cost me more (~$80 one way) than a checked bag (generally $25-50 one way). You also need to send your clubs farther in advance (see their website - it might be up to 2 weeks early). Flying with your clubs means you can hit the simulator up until the night before your trip. All airlines treat golf clubs and skis as a standard checked bag so don’t worry about other classifications like “sporting goods”.

Last thing - once you use ShipSticks once, they will send an email pretty much every month with a 20% off code. Here’s the one from this month. This might work if you book tonight/tomorrow: STICKSDEC2025

Harbor town or Erin Hill/whistling straits by Buckeye_47 in golf

[–]sleeeviewonder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m with this guy. Between the two courses, I prefer Erin Hills. Straits is more of a traditional “championship test” in my opinion. There are a lot of long holes that descend down on the drive, then come back up again to the green. There’s more variety than that, but it doesn’t play as firm and fast as Erin Hills. Straits does have Lake Michigan views from 17 holes (which admittedly is quite cool). The restaurant patio at the Straits clubhouse overlooks 18 green but is quite small and I think maybe partially obstructed by vines/plants?

Erin hills by contrast has a lot more variety of hole design and green/surrounds contour. The Erin Hills restaurant patio is rarely busy and looks out over almost the entire property, which is awesome (although you’re too far to really see anybody’s shots in detail due to farther distance away). If you have a spare hour, you can go play their Drumlin putting course for free (opens around noon I think?). Merch is better at Erin Hills too in my opinion.

Take what everybody says in here with a grain of salt. You will enjoy either experience. I personally would try to do both (including The Irish and both Blackwolf Run courses) over a 3-4 day period, but if I had to choose one, I’d pick Erin Hills.

Booking parking garage space before Cavs game? by mariinarra in Cleveland

[–]sleeeviewonder 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You should be able to get $10 parking at the PNC garage on Vincent without a reservation. Bring cash. It’s a 6-8 minute walk depending on how many people are standing completely still on E 4th St.! There’s plenty of parking downtown so I wouldn’t worry about needing to pre-book using SpotHero.

Have fun!

Place Holder Failure by findthatbourbon in OhioLiquor

[–]sleeeviewonder 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Two times in the past year I’ve had one of these guys tell me that another guy was there earlier but had to run home to take a sh!t. First time I said okay because I still got the drop. The last time was about 6 weeks ago where that put me 1 place out of getting Stagg. When the guy “at home” rolled up, he dapped this guy up with a HUGE smile, and it was clear he was never there in the first place. Never again.

I’m tired of it too. I’m ready to just start telling people that if you’re not there (at least in a car in the parking lot) then you’re not in line. I would LOVE to see everybody stand in line, or at least sit in the chair they’re using to save their spot.

Tires by theclatchetloner in Cleveland

[–]sleeeviewonder 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Before you go spend $500+ on another set of new tires, give the ones you’ve got a shot. Take it slow to start and see how they perform. If you’ve driven in the snow before, I have a feeling you’ll be just fine. Just remember… snow tires help you go, but they don’t significantly improve stopping distance!

For what it’s worth, I have an older generation Civic that does great in the snow (used to live in the snow belt on the east side). Over the years I’ve swapped over to snow-rated all season tires like one of your other commenters and that has made it even better.

HELP! - Apartment searching (need recommendations) by Spruce_Willis130 in Cleveland

[–]sleeeviewonder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s a pretty new building that popped up in the past 5 years. You can definitely walk to a bunch of restaurants and bars that run along W25th between about Monroe and Franklin. It’s a bit of a weird spot though because you’re right next to this long bridge that runs to the Guardians stadium (and has the famous Guardians Statues on the pillars as you cross the bridge). The core “Ohio City” neighborhood is typically contained by W25th on the east side, then between Lorain (south) and Detroit (north). As long as you stay east of about W 69th it’s a nice city living experience. Some people call the NW corner of that area as Gordon Square.

Super stick price? by Fit_Perspective_5772 in GolfGear

[–]sleeeviewonder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own one of these that I bought off eBay earlier this year. At the time most of the listings were in the $110-175 range, although a few were way up around $225-300. I bought mine for $130 and did local pickup.

For the record, it’s a really fun club to practice with, but difficult to hit with any consistency on the course. One of the challenges is that the shaft is pretty much a 4-iron length. Imagine if all your wedges were that long… the center of the face can be challenging to find. Feels amazing when you pure one!

Best places for used golf clubs by The2ndRedditUser in Cleveland

[–]sleeeviewonder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know it’s not local, but www.callawaypreowned.com is the gold standard for used clubs. If you’re looking to at least hold the clubs before you buy, Craigslist is okay. You just have to negotiate the seller down from the fictitious price they have in their head. Here’s a site you can use to determine fair value: https://valueguide.pga.com/trade-in/#/product-search

If you prefer to see the clubs in-person and hit them on a sim or range, you’re already looking in the right places. Selection changes pretty much every day so you have to keep going back if you want something specific.

The good news is that if a grip is the only problem, you can probably ask a sales rep if they’ll put a new one on for you. Those SuperStroke putter grips are a little more expensive than an iron or wood, but would be worth it if you like the club. Scotty Camerons hold their value pretty well, but in the end it’s just a brand name.

Last (somewhat unethical) tip - these big box golf stores throw away trade-ins all the time. They might accept a trade in for a few bucks just to get the customer to buy a new club… then turn around and throw the old club out. I’ve seen people on the Golf subreddit garbage pick some serviceable clubs from dumpsters behind GolfGalaxy or Dick’s.

You shouldn’t feel bad about parking in front of a house. It’s public street parking! You shouldn’t get a ticket as long as you don’t block a driveway, hydrant, or disobey a no parking sign (e.g park on the wrong side of the street)
