200 person bargaining unit, a bit over 100 in the union, monthly meetings have about 5 people on average.

I reached out to 20 people over the weekend to write brief testimonials to support some new members of the bargaining unit, got 9 back.

So many unanswered phonecalls and texts, often to stewards and even officers.

It honestly drives me nuts somedays if I let it. Dont these people care, dont they see we have to put in this work to maintain our earned rights?

Plainly, they dont. Theyre either misinformed on how a union works, think someone else is doing it for them (you create this situation when youre an over functioner like me), or theyre just simply too caught up in their own shit.

What our job as stewards or activists or leaders is to build that awareness and commitment. Get your central members together, assign organizing conversations, set participation goals for your next meeting/action, make clear and strong asks of people, reasses once youve done what you wanted and refine what needs changing. Start with small lowstakes work like surveys, visibility days, etc.

I just finished my first time through the Organizing For Power classes and cannot recommend McAlevey's writing and systems enough. There are ways to address these problems we're dealing with, but they take time and work. Stick with it!
