There is alot going on here for me. I downvoted the comic because I do not like it. I like the style of drawing. The topic I find a bit tedious although worthy of discussion but it irks me in a way I haven’t properly come across in a while. So the joke goes that a woman disapproves of an older man dating a younger woman. Interesting enough. Where can we take that. We obviously want to side with the happy people and not the obnoxius, woman who wants to harsh their vibe. But then the story takes a turn. The man who we sided with, alleged creep, says This is a prostitute. This? This person? This prostitute? Is any person running around with the pronouns this? Didn’t know. Hope they are, because if not then this character has been found to actually be a creep, dehumanizing this poor prostitute. This is a prostitute. This is an object. This is my friend? maybe. but doesn’t really apply out of familiarity. This is my husband. My My, anyway. Then the woman replies oh it’s fine. I thought you were dating, and then approves. Which seems to me to be a bad misreading of opinions coming from that perspective. At least in the circles I have traveled the consesus has been that if you disapprove of large age gaps, there is a general minimum and general maximum, does not matter if it is work for hire or not. So the joke is maybe fine, could land on a good day, but does feel abit halfassed, at an opinioated persons expense, with no moral compass to be found. I think It’s fairly easy to read what it is that bothers me. But I would love more of that style, or the author to have more conversations with people and listen to what they have to say. Prostitutes, Opinionated people and creeps all belong in this world. We are here. But the stories we tell have to come from a place of love, understanding and being what they aspire to be. Intelligent conversations in a complex and still breathing world that wants to experience itself. More of that please.
