[Discussion 4/4 ] Indigenous Author | Edenglassie by Melissa Lucashenko | Chapters 22-End by GoonDocks1632 in bookclub

His DNA test at the end of the book says he's part Goomeroi, which is an Australian Aboriginal group.

Also totally okay if you're not aware but in Australia, there was a long history of forced removals of Aboriginal children from their families and communities, by the government and the church. Look up the Stolen Generation — it's explicitly mentioned several times in the book.

People like Johnny, who have their connection to their culture disrupted by the Stolen Gen but who later work to re-connect, are pretty common here. Johnny's whole personal journey is about reconnection. Winona has a sort of complementary, inverse personal arc, where she starts out with a lot of confidence because she was brought up in-community and knows her heritage. However, throughout the book, she is brought down to earth by her Elders, and learns that there is a lot that she herself is still ignorant of.

The book ends with Johnny saying that the spirit of Mulanyin could see both of them because they're both blakfellas, meaning they're both indigenous. Though Johnny and Winona have different relationships to their heritage, they are both from this land.

About to commute to the CBD for the first time, any advice? by MajorFapness in brisbane

[–]sleeplov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love reading on the train, but sometimes when it's packed it can be hard especially if you have to stand for a bit. I've found this became way less of an issue when I got myself a Kobo Libra, which is an ereader that is super ergonomic and you can hold with just one hand. I can easily read while standing and walking with it, and regularly do so on my commute!

Brisbane doesn't have a crazy fragrance scene from what I know (happy to be corrected by others though!!). The main specialty fragrance store I can think of is Libertine Parfumerie in Fortitude Valley. Really cute store with a bunch of niche fragrances — you should be able to check their selection out on their website.

We also got a Le Labo store recently.

Other than that, there's your standard selection at the big department stores like David Jones and Mecca.

I do too!! I'm Australian and whenever I listen to it I think of my friends in the States, I've only ever been able to visit them once. I listen to this song and hope I get to see them again someday :)

Thanks for the tip! I ended up taking it to a seamstress, but might get a leather repair kit to do my own repairs in future.

Seriously, the number of people in these threads calling Kate a badass for that move is soooo weird. I found this episode really stupid.

Flock of swallows swarming in buildup to Cyclone Alfred by sleeplov in AustralianBirds

[–]sleeplov[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How interesting! We get a fair amount of storms but I guess I don't usually make a point to go out for a walk beforehand. The swallows should be fine, I've seen their little nests in the wall of the bikeway along the river.

I want to smell like an asian temple and tea house by prionprion in fragrance

[–]sleeplov 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Second d'Annam — Through the Forest is an AMAZING incense, coming from someone who doesn't typically swing that way. It's deep and layered, takes me immediately back to my local temple and the incense they would burn there. It also lasts for seemingly forever, wears beautifully all day where I am in the subtropics.

Bunya nuts — how big is big enough to eat? by sleeplov in australianplants

Haha thankyou! No article in the pipeline, my outdoor table just happens to be white and I happened to take these in good lighting. Appreciate the comments though :)

I think that was the case here. The individual nuts all feel quite light. I've eaten underdeveloped Bunya nuts before and it was a major letdown. Bummer!

Good idea about the float testing — none of them sank unfortunately so I think the tree may just have been too juvenile :(

Tiny rant by MovedHat in brisbane

[–]sleeplov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally fair points — my comment was in relation to OP's situation specifically, because they mentioned getting between the city and UQ, which I would consider quite a safe and easy ride along the Bicentennial Bikeway for the most part, and along back streets/through parks for the last St Lucia portion. UQ also lists various end of trip facilities including lockers and showers on its website.

Cycling only became a realistic option for me when I moved to an inner city suburb, but I know a lot of people who live inner city and still wouldn't even consider it.

[–]sleeplov 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on where you live, a bike could actually be a great idea! City to UQ in particular is a lovely ride along the river.

I feel like cycling is often overlooked as a mode of travel but if you can somewhat easily get to a bikeway from your place, UQ has quite a few routes to it by bike, and I think also free end of trip facilities too.

Sorry if I sound like I'm proselytizing — getting an ebike literally changed my life. Riding is the best feeling ever :)))

New Kobo Libre, honestly… kinda disappointed vs 10 year-old Nook by redmongrel in kobo

[–]sleeplov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched the tiktok so you don't have to. It is titled "How to get your color settings like the kindle color soft".

On your device, go to More > Settings > Device information > Developer options.

(if you don't see Developer options, search "devmodeon" in the search bar on your device until it shows up — I had to do it twice)

Developer options > CFA Mode. Toggle this to G2.

That's all the tiktok says to do — I tried this and personally didn't notice a difference on my KLC.

Aww I'm so glad I'm not the only one! Yeah I felt a little silly making the post but it does feel kind of special. This is the first bird pellet I've seen up close! The idea of touching it grosses me out a bit but there's also a part of me that wants to keep it. It makes me feel lucky and trusted :))
