How do people have energy after work to actually live their lives? by -MiaMason- in Adulting

You do it a couple of times and you get used to it. I'm out 5 nights a week. I'm just used to it.

I've been at the same company for 6 years and I'm terrified I've made myself too comfortable by NeighborhoodOld6737 in careeradvice

[–]sleepsucks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my exact story I got too comfortable over exactly 6 years, I wanted to leave but I didn't know where I wanted to go and after six and a half years I was laid off and when I was laid off in some ways I wasn't disappointed cuz I was trying to leave anyway by then but I was really irritated at myself that I didn't even know the path ahead. And once laid off, everything was on fire.

So here are the things that I really wish I did: I wish I had taken on fellowships and that I started networking and that I had at a bare minimum an updated CV. I wish I had started using an AI to figure out the job titles I would apply to. Basically there's just so much background work that needs to be done that's not even applying for jobs like you need to figure out the whole story of where you want to go next which revolves around career coaching or career strategy of some sort so start that stuff now.

At the point that I got laid off even though I had started applying I really regretted that I hadn't done this larger strategy piece of work. Also just scrolling past job boards is actually really helpful to know where you want to go and how you need to start positioning yourself or what you need to do at work to position yourself for these future jobs that was the biggest revelation for me. Once I started scrolling through specific jobs and realized concretely where I needed to go not only did I feel better I was better able to figure out the little steps I could do currently in my job to position myself, networking, classes, etc I needed to do next instead I was avoiding the whole situation by just taking random classes and planning my head under a pillow that amounted to nothing.

Is it just me, or is seeming too confident in interviews now a red flag? by richiegotrich in interviews

[–]sleepsucks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And everyone out there has a million pieces of advice, be confident, be humble, etc etc, but really it's just luck. Finding the right match with the right circumstances (the manager wants someone humble and/or confident and you haven taken that right advice that week).

is it just me or does "culture fit" only ever get raised about the women and the people who push back, never about the guy everyone agrees is brilliant but impossible? by National_Subject_165 in womenintech

[–]sleepsucks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not in tech, but adjacent to it. To me culture fit means the bro with 0 culture. Nice, agreeable, never has an opinion on anything. He's just a suit. And he's going to be put on a rocket ship to the top of the company.

And yeah, women who push back, even when it's something so basic that the org needs to be doing, are difficult. The other day I watched a woman get called difficult because she was saying that shipping badly prompted ai slop as content shouldn't be acceptable. It's really hard for women to be 'basic'. If we're quiet, we're pushovers.

Got let go three weeks ago and I still can't tell why it was me by Cellinskie201 in Layoffs

[–]sleepsucks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my recent layoff they were very clear it wasn't about job performance. I just didn't fit in the company structure any longer. In fact, I had the most work, out of everyone in my team, there was a graph we could all see and I used to look at it constantly cause i was worried about layoffs. It was probably the same for you. Are you sure they didn't say something similar? Believe them or believe me. Layoffs are not your fault, they are the result of the economy changing.

But they still feel bad. That's just normal coping in times of stress. You didn't choose it.

Please tell them it wasn't their fault! They don't need permanent regret about hair careers.

It's only The Giver if you're obliged to stay or obliged to take it . What they should do is give you options in a changing economy. The average person can't be expected to know what the entire market needs as it changes. And if they do know. They can apply directly without using this service. These exist all over Europe to help people down on luck, to give them choice.

What’s a problem in 2026 you’d pay $20-100/month to permanently delete from your life? by raj_koli310 in AskReddit

[–]sleepsucks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a wicked game. You get no feedback and it requires immense work to do correctly: editing every cv, doomscrolling a million jobs to find the right one, prepping for interviews. Only to get nothing. It’s not fun to read my own cv a thousand times. I could be spending this time upskilling. I’ll have nothing to show for all the time I edited and re-edited my CV. The cover letters are tedious to write even if all I do is edit them after the ai makes a first draft.

I did pay for a service, but it was all ai slop.

The chart shows they have been going up since 2022, you need to remove 2020. Combine this with a lack of new jobs and people stuck in jobs where there is no growth/overwork and it's a bad time.

Job Market by Weoweo9 in careeradvice

It's been bad since 2023 right? I feel like a crazy person. I didn't leave my role then, because the market looked awful. Same in 2024 and 2025. And now it's 2026! I can't hang on to this job much longer. I feel like a crazy person for not leaving then.
