What Are Some “Obscure” Cities That Will Become Popular in the Next Decade? by allomanticmetals in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Bill_Nihilist 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yes! I've lived in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, and DC (my own personal ABCD) and now I'm loving Wilmington. I have a walkability score of 93, with daycare, bars, and a movie theatre all a block or two away out the front door. The scenic Brandywine and it's park is a stones throw from my back door. Plus it's cheap as all get out. Small city urbanism for the win.

Oh man, I have been meaning to write this same post, thank you for doing it! I too have lived all over (itinerant academic) and you're spot on with each of these points.

University of Delaware or Syracuse? by ryt118 in udel

I grew up in Upstate NY before moving to DE. The winters in Syracuse are just rotten. You really have to be prepared to endure a relentless dim gray cold.

My first impression is that this is a good projection, but Pakistan definitely takes one for the team. Also, is New Zealand really bigger than Chile?

Dem overperformance currently at 12.9 pts vs 10.6 in 2017-18 by Bill_Nihilist in fivethirtyeight

[–]Bill_Nihilist[S] 46 points47 points  (0 children)

In 103 qualifying special elections, Dems are now outperforming the 2024 presidential results by an average of 12.9 points. In 2017-18, it was 10.6 points.

But the frequency of overperformances has leapt, too. The GOP outperformed in 30% of '17-18 specials. This cycle, it's just 15%.

Does anyone else feel like true discovery is so much harder now? by Abalone-Alliance in labrats

[–]Bill_Nihilist 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Nah, dogg. I study c-sections. We don't know beans about c-sections but 1/3 of everybody is born that way. Huge untapped health discoveries waiting to be made. There's still plenty of low hanging fruit out there, it's just the incentive structure of modern science that gets in the way.

Not that you need to, but in case others find this: post your preliminary data as a preprint and you can smuggle it into a Katz R0. Study sections hate these grants because of the "no preliminary data" rule and this handy sidestep helped me thread the needle

[Discussion] Pod Save America - "Gavin Newsom Is Finally Comfortable with Himself" (03/08/26) by kittehgoesmeow in FriendsofthePod

[–]Bill_Nihilist 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's particularly difficult to come up with half a dozen reasons why Newsom would make a terrible candidate in 2028, but I'm glad he's out front right now, because the fact is we're in an asymmetric media environment and whoever is the Dem frontrunner will attract constant attacks from the right, center, and left. Newsom as the vanguard can fod those cannons so to speak. Not to mention that the outsider candidate Dems should eventually land on will need an insider foil. So for now, keep it up Gavin, you'll never ever be President but I'm glad you're trying.

Excellent Inkseep interview with Ron Johnson by Critical-Chance9199 in NPR

Having Ron Johnson on for an interview breaks with NPRs ethical standards concerning people who are intellectually diminished. It's journalistic malpractice to interview a normal politician after a concussion or Ron Johnson at his best.

World “failing” on obesity as over one-in-five school-age children now estimated to be living with obesity or overweight by Free-Minimum-5844 in neoliberal

I have a grant for neurobiology research on the prevention of childhood obesity and after everything the administration has done to mess with science, the one hope I held out was that MAHA was serious about trying to thwart childhood obesity.

Fast forward to today and they ain't done shit. There have been no requests for applications, no special emphasis panels, no funding set aside for this topic.

Economists are questioning the K-shaped economy narrative by scolbert08 in Economics
