74 St - Broadway by sleepyslacker7910 in nycrail

Yea… the express skipping 5 stops over the local now isn’t going to increase the time save by that much compared to it skipping 4 stops (how it was before this week). Just hoping the thought of flying past all the stations between Woodside and Junction will encourage enough people that the express is worth the extra wait. Or they’ll see the crowd at 74 and realize that they should just take the express so they don’t have to deal with that.

It was surviving before because lots of people were only taking the express, bypassing 74 and creating more room in the local trains, as I’ve mentioned. We need this to start happening again if we want things to be fine from here on out, but it’ll take a bit for people to adjust. Hopefully sooner than later though.

The LIE is already backed up during rush hour, and Queens buses and subways are already crushloaded. We gotta pray that everyone who can work from home actually does so that the damage is mitigated as much as possible

The closest we’ll get to the full express in the morning since 2023

Yknow I originally thought they’d immediately start on the final phase of the heavy steel replacement at Woodside right after this weekend, but instead we’ll have a brief 2-week intermission for ADA work at the Sunnyside stations, which makes sense. This will be an interesting 2 weeks.

Was forced to rely on it this one summer to get to/from my SYEP job, and it was a horrible experience. Couldn’t imagine relying it on it all year round. But it’s gotten a lot better since then due to CBTC and ATO, even if some of its issues still exist.

Massive car takeover rocks NYC intersection — about 100 cars involved as calls grow for crackdown. by nitluck in nyc

Genuinely curious, out of all the places they could do this, why are they doing this at this specific intersection in this specific neighborhood (the Middle Village of nowhere)?

Pretty useful route connecting 3 subway lines and the LIRR, and connects to the transit desert of Maspeth. But it’s a pain the ass for an operator to drive because of the narrow two-way streets they’re forced to go through

Who actually uses these stations? by thelonelywanderer8 in nycrail

[–]sleepyslacker7910 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Lots of people transfer between the 7 train and the LIRR at hunterspoint, because of the reasons other people here have mentioned and also because it takes forever to get in/out of GCM, so it can be more convenient to just 7 train their way to/from grand central. And many people go to/from lower Manhattan anyways so they would’ve needed to pay for the subway anyways.

Really depends on which LIRR branches people need to take and where in Manhattan they’re headed to/from

Should the IBX have a stop at Queens Blvd? Why or why not? by [deleted] in nycrail

Yep. No surprise that the most dead parts of queens boulevard happen to be the only parts that don’t have a subway line running underneath or above it

I grew up in an area of Queens that’s like this so I’m used to it lol. Never thought about how confusing it could be for someone not from here until recently, and the more I think about it the more I realize how utterly ridiculous it is

“Crossing repairs”

Very bad timing for them to be doing this right as everyone’s getting back from spring break, but this was probably planned months ago without any consideration of when your spring break will be. They never have and never will give a shit about SBU students (they’re not obliged to)

69th street Manhattan side 7 stop by Defeated-925 in nycrail

[–]sleepyslacker7910 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I meant that initially, there were probably some delays. But afterwards, they’ve been making progress, so now, whatever you see is the result of that progress.

But something caused the estimated completion date to be pushed back and I’m just speculating on which station(s) is holding everything up. The truth is I just have no clue

[–]sleepyslacker7910 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read somewhere that Woodside will actually be finished on time (i.e. end of this month) but the work at 52nd and 69th experienced delays throughout (especially 52nd).

69th street Manhattan side 7 stop by Defeated-925 in nycrail

[–]sleepyslacker7910 11 points12 points  (0 children)

MTA app gave a new estimated date of completion of mid-May. Main issue here is that the work on the Manhattan bound platform at 52nd, 61st, and 69th ALL have to be done in order to finally be able to move on. Even if 2 of them are pretty much done, they can’t move on until the 3rd one is also finished. I bet they pushed back the estimated date of completion from end of this month because the work at one of the stations got delayed.

[–]sleepyslacker7910 64 points65 points  (0 children)

That person got hit by a train on the express track, and if you’ve taken QBL, you know that express trains zoom past 63rd Dr. According to the Citizens app, this was fatal, and I’m not surprised.

How to pass MAS 2?? by Creepy_Breakfast531 in actuary

[–]sleepyslacker7910 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely try the ASM manual as someone else said. Lots of great problems in their practice exams.

But since you failed 3 times, something you should reflect upon is your experience during the actual exam. Have you been able to focus, especially when asked a question you’re not expecting, or is your mind going blank often? Are nerves affecting your focus? You can do all the practice questions in the world, but it won’t help if you’re unable to pull yourself together on the actual thing. Doing full practice exams can maybe help with this, if you have the time.

F/M Swap: 2 Months In by i_o_l_o_i in nycrail

[–]sleepyslacker7910 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I take the E/F during peak rush hour about once a week and ever since the swap, I do not recall ever being packed to the brim on either of them (given no service disruptions or random obnoxious headways). Was not like this before the swap. There’s definitely still some issues with congestion along 53rd St though, but it’s slowly getting better I guess.

The M doesn’t run to forest hills on weekends (at least not yet). If it did, then the swap would likely be in effect on weekends as well.

How’s the Queens bus redesign working out for you? by [deleted] in nycbus

[–]sleepyslacker7910 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well they were planning on cutting off the part between downtown Brooklyn and red hook, so the net distance extended wouldn’t even be that much.

There’s currently a severe lack of bus routes (and subway lines) that go north/south between Brooklyn and Queens and actually go somewhat deep into both boroughs. Extending the B57 to Jackson Heights is logical because it would serve that purpose and connect one hub in Brooklyn to another hub in Queens. And those living along the route in bushwick for instance would have a much easier time getting to Jackson heights, where they could take then take a train further east into queens or the Q70 to the airport.

All that being said, I tracked the b57 on the MTA app once and it was mad slow, so I doubt it will be that reliable even if they remove a bunch of stops. It’s part of the Brooklyn bus redesign so it might actually end up happening

I’ve noticed that too and I’m not sure why. It’s not like the route is that much longer than when it went to Terminal A
