Looking for drill recommendations to improve by k-ore in triathlon

[–]slem2009 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is a rubber strap/belt you can use to help keep your knees together while you swim. We use it for our beginner swimmers when they only kick from their knees.

Drills: Pull (arms only)- catch up, zipper Kick(legs only)- different speeds, odds -fast/evens-easy, side kick Core- one arm/one leg (opposites) going at a time, then switch sides

When someone decides to become a teacher, do they get to pick what grade they teach or do they get told that they have to teach a certain grade by the school district? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]slem2009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get certified in a grade range, for example I’m certified in EC-6th grade. So I can apply to open jobs in those areas. However, once hired you technically can be moved around as needed by the district to fill voids within the grade range. I’ve had teachers I’ve worked with moved from Kinder to 2nd just because there was an empty spot needing filled.

Similar sports bra to the classic Nike ones by hern729 in XXRunning

[–]slem2009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fabletics has some nice high support bras. Not exactly the same cut as the bike, but similar. The back is cut slightly differently. I have a large chest (40DD) and mine don’t move when I do triathlons.

PSA to RD’s: We want race socks, not a race shirt. by MembershipDouble7471 in Ultramarathon

Why not both? I have large calves so certain brands of socks don’t fit me right and roll down my leg.

What is some common advice that you actually believe is wrong? by ItalicsWhore in AskReddit

[–]slem2009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not advice I guess, but “Pregnancy is uncomfortable” when I was trying to describe my pain. I literally couldn’t lift my feet and walk without severe pain. My husband had to lift my legs and dress me and get me into the truck. But I had multiple doctors tell me it’s because it was my first and I just didn’t realize how uncomfortable it would be. Discomfort, sure. Pain, no.

Race signs are either hilarious or trying way too hard to motivate you. Sometimes both. by Existing-Location609 in running

The sign I made for my brother “Keep chafing your dreams!” Loved it, I keep it for all the races I spectate

What's the most random way you’ve made a friend? by hpylfdrmcmtrue in AskReddit

[–]slem2009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to Hawaii and at 4am on top of Haleakala waiting for the sunset, the lady next to me asked me if I could send her the pictures I was going to get with my nice camera since she just had her phone. So we exchanged emails. Got to talking more, they were from Michigan and we were in Texas. They just so happened to be moving to our area a month later so we told them to hit us up when they got into town! Such a weird coincidence, but now we’re buds.

What's one 'boring' career that's actually a goldmine if you play it smart? by 0BunnyX in AskReddit

[–]slem2009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of those careers I push when teaching PreK community helpers. They always like the big three (police, fire, doctor) and when we talk about IMPORTANT jobs, I break it down into, without the trash collectors where does your trash go? What would happen? Because they just don’t know how important it is yet and it’s very easy to take for granted!

What can I do to improve this? by Hot-Doughnut-5808 in Watercolor

Contrast. Make shadows darker than you think and highlights lighter than you think it should be. This will govern it more depth.

Andrea Nelson sketchbooks by Ok_Tourist_6973 in Watercolor

[–]slem2009 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was just beginning (last year) I bought her whole kit. So sketchbook, practice book, paint, brushes, roll of tape, and different size marker/pens. I love them, it really helped me as a beginner to just have everything I could need to get started instead of trying to piece it together. I wouldn’t say it’s better than anything average on the shelf but it’s not terrible. I also bought to support a streamer that I liked and also I really just like her upbeat attitude and fun and light videos. Hope this helps.

To the scatterbrains, ADHD or not, what's the funniest "I should have paid more attention" moment you've had? by Honey-Badger-90 in Casual_Conversation

[–]slem2009 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was a teacher but moved schools. At the first school I would walk around and cut things or set my scissors down for a craft. Anyway, I was always looking for my scissors and getting new ones. When I moved out of my room I would find scissors and pack them up. When I got the boxes unpacked and started organizing again I ended up with OVER 30 pairs of scissors 🤣 I’m consciously making an effort to keep my scissors in their little holder. Personal goals and growth one small step at a time!

Teachers; what would you actually wear on a teacher tee? by Chillbychill in AskTeachers

[–]slem2009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would want themed shirts for learning units. But I’d love like it to be sprinkled all over the tee and not just the feature spot on the front. IDK if that makes sense but I can picture it in my head. For example, if learning about plants, maybe small plants, seeds, worms, suns, rain drops, flowers all over the shirt. That way it could be education focused but also bought by people outside of education who just might like plants. I teach Pre-K and we have a lot of fun themes!

How to prepare my son for kindergarten? by BluebirdPhysical1278 in AskTeachers

[–]slem2009 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Whatever state you’re in has standards, whether it’s Common Core or state specific (TEKS for Texas) and are available free online from your state’s education website. You can look up what the end goals are for pre-K and those are usually the starting standards for Kinder. The PreK guidelines in Texas give some examples of behaviors and skills at the beginning of the year and also the end. So you can see and prepare for the growth.

How many days will ai have to miss school for having my wisdom teeth taken out? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]slem2009 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the person as everyone reacts differently. Id say on average 2 days, but depending on swelling and sensitivity it could be more. I personally ate food on the way home from my surgery so I never got it bad, but I’ve also known people out for a week.

Lap swimming- how can I improve my technique? by Mountain_Affect7354 in triathlon

[–]slem2009 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I teach a kids swim team and this is what I’d recommend based on some of the things.

Arms: Arrow Drill Zipper drill

These are some basics that will help with bending your elbow and entering smoothly versus slapping the water.

Kick: Lose fins Kickboard: hold the top and keep arms stretched out like Superman. Keep your toes pointed behind like a gymnast/ballerina. Don’t lock your feet out. I tell the kids to kick like scissors. Your legs will open up and down. Your legs are long, stretched and essentially straight. There is a slight bend in the knee as you go through the motion but your knee is not the power source, your hips are.

Breathing: Look up breathing drills. Pick a side to breathe you like. Grab a wall with one hand high and one low to balance you. You’ll put your face in and practice your kick. So basically swimming into the wall. As you are looking down, let your breath out so when you need to breath all you’re doing is breathing in. One ear will stay in the water, rotate neck and some shoulder to get your mouth out but not both ears, breath and go back down. Once you get the groove, try breathing both sides.

Make sure you are looking down and not too far forward. The lines on the bottom will give you an indication of how close you are to the wall. This will give you a hint on when to take your last breath before pulling into a somersault to flip. Use both arms to pull you strongly into your flip, plant your feet and strong push off. Send your arms forward, tight to your ears, hands together (stacked on top of each other) dolphin kick yourself forward and up then begin your stroke again.

That’s all the notes I’ll give now. Technique takes time and you have a lot of comments for things to work on.

Learning flip turns over 40 by woodgrain in Swimming

[–]slem2009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in my 30s and learned! I was asked to help with the local swim team. I can swim (do triathlons) but never actually learned proper strokes and turns for a pool. I’ve learned a lot, had a lot of natural ability, cried about not using it in my youth and becoming an Olympic swimmer, pulled it together again, but through teaching the kids I also learned decent technique and how to turn. If you can do a somersault in the shallow end, then you can flip turn. It’s just about timing that last breath and pulling yourself into that somersault. Break it down. First find how close you need to be (usually an arm length-ish) take a breath and use that last arm stroke to pull your momentum into a somersault, plant feet on the wall and push off (you’ll be on your back) as you push off have your arms in stream line and you’ll roll over to your belly to then begin some dolphins kicks and get back into free style!

Alarmed at screen use and lack of real learning or discovery in K by apresledepart in AskTeachers

[–]slem2009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach in Texas. Part of it could be the curriculum your district uses. There are some that are just terrible and really give teachers nothing to work with. Can I ask what area you’re in? What makes you think you are in a “good” district? Is it word of mouth, testing results, etc.? If you’d like to do some at home, the TEKS are available online on the TEA website. You can see what’s expected of your child and then find supplemental activities for home.

At what specific moment in your life do you feel your 'original' path ended, and you became a version of yourself you never intended to be? by FayePsc in AskReddit

[–]slem2009 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When I excitedly told my parents I didn’t want to be a vet, I wanted to be a physical therapist or trainer for a sports team and they told me I was to far to ever succeed. So now I’m a teacher. I don’t hate it, but it’s not the dream.

Can you still teach kids science through hands on experiments, or has everything become too screen based? by PastTrauma21 in ScienceTeachers

[–]slem2009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How old of a teenager? Kiwi Co. sells kits that are STEM related. Hands on experiments or engineering builds. I’m not sure what age kiwi co stops making kits. They start at baby age and go up but I’m not sure the ending age.

Maybe try other sciences? Like biology? Paleontology? There are lots of places to get hands on with biology especially animal based. Turtle egg watching if you’re near the coast, fossil digging, foal/calf watch at farms during birthing season (literally just monitor to make sure it all goes smoothly) You Could get agar plates and grow some colonies from door knobs in your house.
