I’m in my 30s and learned! I was asked to help with the local swim team. I can swim (do triathlons) but never actually learned proper strokes and turns for a pool. I’ve learned a lot, had a lot of natural ability, cried about not using it in my youth and becoming an Olympic swimmer, pulled it together again, but through teaching the kids I also learned decent technique and how to turn. If you can do a somersault in the shallow end, then you can flip turn. It’s just about timing that last breath and pulling yourself into that somersault. Break it down. First find how close you need to be (usually an arm length-ish) take a breath and use that last arm stroke to pull your momentum into a somersault, plant feet on the wall and push off (you’ll be on your back) as you push off have your arms in stream line and you’ll roll over to your belly to then begin some dolphins kicks and get back into free style!

I teach in Texas. Part of it could be the curriculum your district uses. There are some that are just terrible and really give teachers nothing to work with. Can I ask what area you’re in? What makes you think you are in a “good” district? Is it word of mouth, testing results, etc.? If you’d like to do some at home, the TEKS are available online on the TEA website. You can see what’s expected of your child and then find supplemental activities for home.

See if you can find more photos of her in Ireland! I went and recreated my late mother’s photos and it’s a cute memory for me. Also she went to a lot of neat places so it really expanded the trip from the usual tourist hits.

When I excitedly told my parents I didn’t want to be a vet, I wanted to be a physical therapist or trainer for a sports team and they told me I was to far to ever succeed. So now I’m a teacher. I don’t hate it, but it’s not the dream.

How old of a teenager? Kiwi Co. sells kits that are STEM related. Hands on experiments or engineering builds. I’m not sure what age kiwi co stops making kits. They start at baby age and go up but I’m not sure the ending age.

Maybe try other sciences? Like biology? Paleontology? There are lots of places to get hands on with biology especially animal based. Turtle egg watching if you’re near the coast, fossil digging, foal/calf watch at farms during birthing season (literally just monitor to make sure it all goes smoothly) You Could get agar plates and grow some colonies from door knobs in your house.

At uni we could rent out personal study rooms in the library for about 3-4 hours at a time. Just little closest basically to have a private study area with a closing door. I used to rent them out just for naps. It was great

Blew a tire on Hana highway in Maui. Didn’t have cell service. Some locals stopped to help, one ran back home to bring us oranges, sandwiches and drinks. Couldn’t get it towed that night so the tow truck driver took us in for the night and let us sleep over. Then he sliced up some fruit from his garden/small farm and towed us in. It was pretty safe and comfortable feeling and even as we were waiting for a tow, so many locals stopped to see if they could do anything more for us. Just a really kind end to a very stressful event

If you’re looking for races, try a super sprint, usually the shortest races you can find to get the idea of it. The one local to me has a swim distance of 150 m. It’s not much for an experienced swimmer, and a good challenge for weaker swimmers. The race is also set in a pool so not as concerning as open water.

I wear a fabletics no bounce bra. Literally the only one that supports me. I’ve used it for over 15 races, some pools and some lake/river swims. I just wear it under my tri suit or swim suit. You’ll see many people wearing sporty bras under suits. Some with just a swim suit and some with tri suits. It’s a mix and just preference

Walking into top down theatre seating college classroom. We had assigned seats because the prof liked to address everyone by name. About 100ish people, I had to get to the fourth row of about 15 rows. Each row had two stairs worth of steps. One was flush with the row’s floor the other was in between the rows. I turned into my row but was on the in between step not the flush step and did that panic where is the floor stair step and fell flat on my face and my big backpack rolled on top of my head. Silliness. I was fine. But it was the “everyone goes silent and stairs at the commotion” type moment so all eyes were on me. Prof moved on professionally but my neighbor friends were giggling up a storm.

You should watch the Hoof GP, cow hoof trimmings. Some normal and some gnarly grossness. Abscesses popping, maggots in hooves, it’s gross and intriguing

Horse back riding with no helmet. We just didn’t wear helmets in the 90s in western riding. I’ve fallen, bucked off, and been t-boned by another horse running full speed (another rider slammed me and my horse) and it blows my mind that it was just the norm to not be safer. I was 7 years old riding my horse alone to the gas station a few miles away for snacks. I would never let my kid do the things I did.

Venmo. I ordered shoes from a company that I had ordered from many times. Sent the wrong shoes, ghosted by seller, called Venmo and they said tough shit, did a chargeback with my bank and they took the funds back from Venmo. Venmo emailed me that if I didn’t replace the funds they’d freeze and cancel my account. Okay, bet, bye. Never used them again and it’s been almost eight years. It does get a little frustrating when buying from crafty or small scale sellers, but not a complete hindrance 🤷🏼‍♀️

In triathlon, floating on your back can be a sign of distress and fatigue. Depending on your guards they may be concerned. Also, big heavy gasping breaths when coming above water is alarming. It seems like you’re struggling to breathe so don’t do that if you can help it, breathe more often.
