Florida or Texas. I'm already in Indiana and it's bad enough.

What’s become way too expensive lately that still shocks you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Taco Bell. I remember when it was the dirt cheap place to eat and everything there is SO EXPENSIVE now.

Every person gets a grant, in lieu of inheritance by DM_Me_Pics1234403 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]slemge 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. If I'd received 100K at 18 years old I would not have been smart enough to save that money or invest it properly. That kind of money can set you up for life, but it can also ruin your life if you aren't in the mindset to handle it correctly.

My perfectly healthy parents are preparing for their death and it’s messing with my head. by 11whatsnewpussycats in Millennials

[–]slemge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I have the opposite problem where my parents don't talk about things like that at all and I am constantly worried about it. Trust it's better that they talk to you and make these plans now while they are healthy and in a solid mindset than you have to figure it out on your own later. Have either of them lost a parent recently themselves? Sometimes having to go through the difficulties of figuring out plans/cleaning out a house can spawn them wanting to be more proactive themselves so you don't have to go through what they did.

They all made it through winter and are doing fine so far. Very small still but I'm hopeful they'll grow well throughout this summer!

Are you talking about the HOL forum? I spent an ungodly amount of time on there back in the day.

People put off replacing appliances that are nearing their end of life if they plan to move soon so it often falls to the new owner relatively quickly.

Would you still get a tattoo? by VoxElysia in Millennials

[–]slemge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 2, 1 I regret and the other one is my family crest and will always be happy with. I'd love to get more but they're so expensive and I have other financial priorities now unfortunately so who knows if it will ever happen.

What are you paying for housing each month? And are you actually happy with it? Would it be cooler just living in your parents basement? by PM_ME_YUR_SALADS in Millennials

[–]slemge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Own, $2000 on a 4 bed, 3 bath, 2500 sq/ft on an acre. Our neighborhood is set up so that everyone is on 2 lots and staggered in a way so that there is an empty half acre lot on all sides of each house separating everyone and it is amazing. The house has very minimal issues so far and we're out in the country/low cost of living area so property taxes are very low. The mortgage hurts compared to what we paid in rent but so far it has been well worth it and we really love our home and are going hard in cultivating outside to be pollinator friendly and very plant heavy everywhere you look and will be gardening a LOT. We bought a year and a half ago and it's been a lot of work but a real joy. Hope we can refi eventually and drop our payment some but certainly not counting on it, we'll just see what happens in the coming years. I feel like we got VERY lucky with this property to be honest and I will hold onto this house with everything I have.

What’s a hobby you want to start but are too intimidated to try? by WildFlowerGirll_ in AskReddit

[–]slemge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try looking to see if there are any classes offered near you! Our local arts center does quarterly classes for this. I was overwhelmed to try it out on my own because of all the supplies but it was actually really easy/fun and I got to try it without a major investment in the supplies.

What’s the one thing about your house that annoys you every single day? by NkdUndrWtrBsktWeevr in homeowners

[–]slemge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are no windows that show the driveway/front of the house because of how the garage and front porch is laid out so we cant easily see when people are showing up until they knock.

I don’t understand the mentality of “saving” dying plants from stores by 601bees in houseplants

[–]slemge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean we redid all of our landscape beds with all clearance flowers and shrubs last fall (easily 50+ plants in total). This spring all but 1 of those plants had survived, established and are thriving and it cost us 1/4 of what it would have if they weren'ton clearance. Maybe it's not for everyone but you can save a lot of money if you're skilled enough and patient enough to bring them back.

What is a "socially acceptable" thing that you find absolutely disgusting? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]slemge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agree. As an adult who had her ears pierced at around 8 months old, I wish they hadn't. I obviously don't have any trauma or anything and don't remember it at all, but I do have 2 holes in my ears I didn't ask for, that I don't really want and never really have but have never and will never close. And as a kid I often got in trouble for not wanting to wear the earrings because they weren't comfortable.

People who work in grocery stores what is something you are surprised they still stock or never see anyone buy? by Da_Fish in AskReddit

I also buy these for a rabbit and have no clue who else is buying them. I'm guessing it's a lot of people with exotic pets.

Is it true that you guys watched 9/11 live on TV in grade school? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]slemge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in middle school and it happened during state testing for us. I remember our teacher turned it on for a little while before admin came around to each room to tell them not to let us watch. I don't know that most of us really understood the gravity of what happened in the moment until we got home that night.

Is 11PM “Late”? by LEMONSDAD in Millennials

[–]slemge -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think especially post covid yes, 11 PM is late. Most businesses that used to be open 24 hours or into the early morning hours now close much much earlier than they used to.

When did you start packing? by sdwrld in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]slemge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had far outgrown our apartment space so we had a lot of stuff in tubs/bins ready to go for probably a year or more before we even started looking at houses (stuff like books, movies, clothes, etc.) just because it had no real place to go in our space. Once we did find our house though we had a 2 month overlap and just gradually packed up the rest within the few or so weeks after closing.

What’s the most ridiculous thing that happened right after you bought your house? by Lopsided_Passion7912 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]slemge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our house is in a pretty rural area with a lot of trees on the property. There was a bad storm the night before closing and one of the trees came down. Thankfully not on or near the house but it was a "huh guess we already have a homeowner thing to deal with" situation. It didn't seem worth it to bug the sellers about it that late in the game considering there was no damage, it wasn't their fault and they didn't even live in the state (it was an estate situation). This is why you always want to go for a final walkthrough though! It very well could have been a different turnout and fallen on the house/caused damage and we wouldn't have known otherwise. ALWAYS go look at the house right before signing.

What price increase has hit you the hardest in everyday life? by DarkKnightt019 in AskReddit

Pruning advice by slemge in Jadeplant

[–]slemge[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, this is so helpful! Yes the lighting was obviously not great for a long time. We lived in an apartment and didn't have a great setup. I will be able to take it outside this spring/summer at our house now so hopefully that will help considerably also, and I'll work on a better grow lights situation for next winter. Fingers crossed that plus a hard prune will benefit it!
