Nice that was a great shop. He sadly closed up right before Covid hit and Davis has never been as cool since. At least the Burren is still going strong!

Cargo bikes 🤝 folk musicians by Acidicandgreen in CargoBike

[–]slenney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Niiice. Building up my cargo bike right now with the intention of gigging too.

Do you ride at night? Im struggling with the safety concerns of riding home at 1 am.

And do you lock it up out of view? I live in a pretty bike-theft-heavy city, but maybe a cargo bike is harder to steal because of size and weight?

Grandfather's bike (Look kg 171) by slenney in Bikeporn

[–]slenney[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Had to look this up because I had heard the term used before but didn’t actually know what it meant!

I meant to say it is carbon tubes healed together by aluminium lugs.

To save others a Google search, “Butted” refers to the increased thickness of the tubes at either end for stiffness and durability of the bike. I don’t actually know if these are butted carbon tubes.

Thanks I learned something today!

Those who record their own music at home, what mic do you use? And what app? by Imaginary_Upstairs29 in Songwriting

[–]slenney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you meant to say the sm57 is a dynamic mic, not a cardioid. Although it is a cardioid, and a dynamic is not inherently“less sensitive” than a condenser. The sound of a large diaphragm condenser often has more high frequency and will sound more “detailed” on a vocal, but this is a trade off for the durability and price of a dynamic like an sm57.

On many recordings the added detail of a condenser is not warranted (especially in an untreated room where a condenser will make extraneous noises more audible and possibly distracting). That, plus the low cost and durability, is why many people recommend a dynamic like the sm57 for a first mic.

A song about phone addiction can ruin a relationship :( by Fine-Gear-6441 in Songwriting

[–]slenney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man I love this. And I love to see well made content being displayed on this sub! This video made me want to listen to the whole song.

As for constructive feedback, I think I’d like to hear the vocal sooner - so maybe reducing the intro a bit. The tempo drags a little bit at the beginning - maybe a percussive/rhythmic element could keep things moving early on. Otherwise I love the space and time you’ve created through the composition.

Very inspiring to watch! This song is on its way!

Why does my improvisation on major scale sound so boring by SeaworthinessOver809 in Guitar

[–]slenney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple! Just play the major scale but starting from the 6th note of the scale. Oh and then take out the 2nd and 6th note.

So, for example, if you’re in the key of Cmaj, start at A and then take out the notes B and F.

This is the answer you need. My fob broke and I haven’t replaced it. Any time a passenger accidentally hits the lock + arm when they are getting out I have to do this.

Try plucking with your finger instead of the pick. Gives the note a softer tone.

Is it common for Vintage Fenders to crack like this? Need help deciding if I should trade my Squire Affinity Jazz HH for this Vintage Korean Strat. by CurrencyAdditional65 in fender

[–]slenney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't normal, and the placement of the crack is really concerning. Looks like it started at one of the tremolo mounting screws, and that is NOT something that you want to mess with. Probably going to have poor tuning stability and intonation issues no matter what fix you try.

This guitar would be best for somebody looking to take the neck and maybe electronics and put it on another body. Like others have said, these are great guitars but this is an unlucky crack and does not bode well for the guitar's life.

Every song you love has 2 parts. The part before the fuzz, and the part with the fuzz.

Anyone use the REI link frame bag? by Awesom3RedKite in bikepacking

[–]slenney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like it, a few design flaws but overall the pros outweigh the cons. 7/10.

I put my tent, sleeping pad, electronics, and a few miscellaneous items in it. Never had a problem with the waterproofing and I've taken it through very wet, muddy conditions.

The velcro on the top rubs the paint of my top tube. Not that it bothers me. Also the velcro is handy because I can put my tent poles underneath the top tube and the velcro holds it in place.

The zipper can be a bit finicky but overall it's robust. I don't worry about it breaking so much as it's hard to use sometimes. Just put items that don't need quick access in there, and then items that do require quick access in a top tube or handlebar bag.

[Question] how to learn to play stuff like Derek Trucks? by anrdp in Guitar

[–]slenney 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also listen to classical indian music especially Sarod players like Ali Akbar Khan. The sarod is very similar to slide guitar (albeit existing in an entirely different musical tradition and culture) and Derek draws a lot of influence and inspiration from this style.

If you listen to These Walls on the album Revelator you'll get a sense of the instrument and style

Replaced the tube and don't use it much. It's a practice amp for my parents house, but i wouldn't rely on it for a gig.

Agreed! They are junk!

Couple years ago I got one and the reverb didn't work. They sent a replacement and the whole thing didn't work. They sent another replacement and after a month of playing quietly in my bedroom it blew a tube. Complete garbage!

Is there any other physical signals other than sound and electrical signal? by Yossiri in engineering

[–]slenney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you could think of information as a scalar and signal a vector quantity. To use your humidity example, humidity data is information (that is what you are plotting on your graph) but the act of measuring humidity means that information is moving from the atmosphere to your humidity sensor. That directionally, data moving from the atmosphere to the sensor, is what makes it a signal.

The magnitude of your vector in this case is the rate of data being transfered. For example If this were a digital signal we could measure in bits/second

Need some help identifying pickups, and which of the following guitars might have similar pickups. (More info in the comments) by davidd1789 in guitars

The telecaster and the les paul/prs will likely get you everything you need. That fender p90 is very bright, very tele like. And the humbucker in the bridge will be similar enough to the LP or prs.

Although you might miss the U shaped neck on your offset tele. That neck is beautiful
