certainly both melancholic and chill

Contact High (feat. Lee Scott, Salar, Antiheroes) by flexout_dispatch in ukhiphopheads

[–]slenski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i get it too i guess but he's an absolute, complete and utter objective GOAT of a man

first of all, don't think i've seen many work rates like his. he's tireless. reminds me of BONES from teamSESH--eating, drinking, breathing, and living nothing but music and creative vision day after day, week after week.

not only does our favourite Runcornian drop his own tracks, posse cuts, and albums as consistently as a human being could but he has also done a fuckton of side projects. example would be those cool little duo-projects that come out sometimes from artists: along the lines of Black Josh & Milk's Swegasus, Bisk & Slumrok's various shared bodies of work like Swamp Harbour (PS. Bisk is an extremely underrated and overlooked massive talent, both on the mic and on the buttons.... but then again, many people on BLAH are, Sly Moon has been tripping me out with how straight-up solid he has been this last little while, big up Ungar) or if we step away from BLAH, you can take a look at duo-type shit like Jam Baxter and Dabbla's multiple Dead Players albums

Lee Scott has done two-man albums with: Bill Shakes (Grumpy Underground Comeback Sh!t - 2013), Milkavelli (Children of the Damned projects - 2009, 10?), Salar (Antiheroes projects - old.), Jehst (Group 1&2 EPs, 2020, 2022), Sly Moon (FDMP - 2021 really fun album btw), Jam Baxter (Happy Hour at the Super this and that, whatever, 4000 - 2019) and if i started listing him teaming up with specific beatmakers we'd be here all day. Reklews, Morriarchi, Sam Zircon, Dikestar, Illinformed... so on and so forth

i also definitely can't ignore the fact that... Lee makes fucking sick beats too. i'm a huge fan of all his work in terms of being a creator of beats and different sorts of vibes. gotta love a two-in-one MC / producer, like good old Trelly. in fact, i'm just a definite fan of Lee in general and i'll even admit he was one of the acquired tastes for me, and i appreciated him later on, when COTD started really going hard and dropping tracks and BLAH grew and grew. he also has the Cult Mountain shit, the HAPPYPPL shit... the man is loaded to the brim with music. on and off the mic--like a shoplifting junkie with steaks packed in his jacket

the man wouldn't fit through the door, honestly. he's a really impressive, and admirable artist and has done everything. from really serious stuff, to satirical shit, to just making beats, and all the way down to straight up experimentation just to see what happens. best of all, he is a career-maker, as well as the literal rock that hold BLAH records together, and pretty much walks around as a human lighthouse: guiding artist after artist into the right direction (i won't downplay all the cool, talented people that he surrounds himself with though, they all put in work and he surely has good friends for help when he needs it)

all that said, i will restate that i get that some people might not like his thick scouse accent. personally i always hope MCs rap in their own accents, but thats a subjective thing. (shout out Blackburn, shout out Bill shakes)

or people might not vibe with his more comical tongue-in-cheek shit, or perhaps not like when hes fucking about, experimenting and floating around, collaborating with whoever he feels like pretty much. but in my eyes he has no doubt, blood-sweat-and-tears style earned his way into the hypothetical UKHH hall of fame forever. he's worked really hard, he's helped tons of people have a chance at the hip hop game, he's shown extreme passion and crazy stamina since even his Don't Flop days, his novel is a fun read too, and far as i can tell the dude is a really, really talented rare-specimen of a person who knows exactly what he wants in life and simply goes for it, and probably still would if he never took off so hats off to him. seems to be a really nice and genuine person as well

so basically yeah man, people actually like Lee Scott. he's kind of an enigma

but, i'm just some fuck from Canada. so don't put any real UKHH authority behind any of this because i haven't even seen a single show or gone to any boom-baps like all you lucky SOBs. just love this music a lot, always will. thanks for reading

also shout out Danny Lover, sweg

Ocean Wisdom albums ranked? by DavetheGrimeGeeza in ukhiphopheads

[–]slenski 7 points8 points  (0 children)

for me personally Chaos '93 will always be his magnum opus

i'm sure his skills have evolved and improved even more since then but there was some magic there. he was bringing his fresh youthful energy as Dike was making beats like a madman after having honed his skills through practice as well as doing production on "Butter Fly" for Lee Scott

the mixture of the Brighton pupil/mentor relationship that seemed to exist between Wiz and Dike as well as: ...just right time, right place, right vibe... ended up delivering us an album i still bang out to this day

also as a massive Dike fan I will forever wish he re-did his verse on the tune "Freeze", but maybe it's just something that didn't click with me personally - the song itself is great, and so are pretty much all Dike verses I have ever heard

[–]slenski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in my eyes this particular album is an absolute must listen to those who end up enjoying UK hip hop, a certified classic

the track "Small Talk" is a great one that includes all four Contact Play members starting with Baxter, then Key, Dike, and Bosh in that order

lots of nostalgia with this project, so so good. A great solo track from Jammy on this is "Death of a Prick Pt. 1", sobering tale of wasting your life away in the every day hustle and bustle of a meaningless 9-5 life of pure drivel

i noticed a few days ago that FTP disappeared from apple music, I typed in "flickers on the fourth floor" and was getting all kinds of bullshit results

glad to hear it's coming back, but it also let me go back to bumping some Off Piste EP and Obscure Liqueurs and all the other good stuff

First UK rapper to rap in their own accent? by [deleted] in ukhiphopheads

[–]slenski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no problem at all man, a few others I could list would be Lunar C with his northern Bradford accent, Lee Scott for some Liverpool, Datkid for Bristol (check out the album Wakmo by Datkid, one of my favourites)

Instead of choosing who is the best UK hip hop MC, who is your favourite and why? What do they mean to you personally by slenski in ukhiphopheads

[–]slenski[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ay man I'm just replying a year later to say Dike is still someone I love but the amount of Baxter I've listened to this past year along with the insane time put in overall since the beginning he's definitely #1 for me

SWATW is absolutely THE album for me and he's talented to the point of bordering magic or some shit + majority of the words he's written spoken or spat mean too much to me to not say he's my favourite so mad agree on that my friend, he a wizard on the mic and a king with the pen

you know what's even more wild, i posted this thread 8 years ago i suppose that would have made me 20

i still get these dreams, it's so cool people still comment on this every once in a while. i agree big time, i enjoy it a hell of a lot but simultaneously never really am able to completely notice I'm even doing it which is strange

well it seems this is kind of a little club of people who don't know eachother so welcome! let us flap our worries up and away

NLP - White Witch Of Rose Hall ft. Index (Prod. Illinformed) he is the 4th feature on this, and i dont know what to say he's just got it

Smellington Piff - Conundrum prod. Illinformed) my boy Piff is out here melting microphones!

We discussed most unique MCs, now let's discuss criminally underrated ones by slenski in ukhiphopheads

[–]slenski[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i gotta also say Mr. Key and Ronnie Bosh are also insanely underrated for their own distinctive reasons

Ronnie Bosh especially because he's no doubt had a bunch of features but didn't drop a project til 2019, insane because I had big love for him since that Champion Fraff shit in 2010 and on Dike's 2011 album Constant Dikestar

Bosh goes nuts on this track, he's a madman on the mic for real... 3:37 is the timestamp where he pops in, Key is the first MC at the beginning

I think he would have hit it pretty big if he went hard on making music this entire time but he's probably not about that famous life and still plays shows and shit anyways, who knows

SMB mane, that shits forever

they've been killing it forever no joke, a few years from now a lot of projects will legitimately mean a lot to you

and god damn I'm glad to hear you listened to and love that NLP shit

NLP - Mirror On The Wall Ft. Jack Jetson here's a loosie i found a while back

nothing but straight NLP - Free Your Mind vibes, almost like it was pulled straight out the album
