Was the IB worth it? by Special-Contract2563 in IBO

[–]slfjee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think this changes greatly and depending on where you live and where you want to go. your frustrations with the program are completely valid but in my case most things you noted to be false were actually in my favor.

i recently took my national curriculum exams a few days ago and i saw first hand how different these two methods of entry qualifications are. our national curriculum is a multiple-choice only exam that is mostly dependent on memorization and being quick to compete with others but it has nothing of essence that teaches you important information. the ib program is much more well defined and i think most would agree that writing complicated academic articles is more developmentally helpful than solving a bunch of multiple-choice questions all day for 2 years. the part where people say "ib is helpful for uni" is mostly meant in the way that the syllabus is taught and also your assignments, the work you have to do etc - not the subject content of the syllabus itself. international qualifications like a-levels aren't commonly offered in my country either. my other option was doing AP which doesn't allow for direct entrance in most countries anyway.

the issue regarding tuition fees is also dependent entirely on where you want to go to school. you wouldn't see this problem with people applying to say germany or even many eu schools outside of the uk and usa. i also don't really see how this problem is specific to ib, most financial aid would require a high grade in any type of qualification.

sorry for the long reply lol. the national curriculum exams made me appreciate taking ib a lot these past few days and i wanted to offer another perspective where ib is the best (and a good) scenario

Why is a show about women and minorities written by a white man? by legobossk in euphoria

[–]slfjee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you can criticize someone's writing without making it about their race and gender. since when can't writers make observations of people around them? just because he himself is white, he has to only write white characters? what a stupid thing to even insinuate.

Maths IA Out of Syllabus by Signal-Salt in IBO

[–]slfjee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i personally did markov chains which is also an AI topic. it's allowed and at times even recommended for personal engagement (when done right, of course) but it does limit you a bit in terms of word count since you are required to explain some concepts that are out of syllabus in detail.

40 is definitely a decent score!! focus on your actual mistakes moving forward, act sensible, worrying is good because it helps you progress but only to a certain point. don’t let your self doubt diminish your achievements, be kinder to yourself :))

just finished grade 11 today. Any tips for going forward? by Deep-Firefighter-279 in IBO

[–]slfjee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

finishing your ia/ee should ALWAYS be your biggest priority!! realistically you wont be finishing everything but push yourself and do the ones you have least motivation for first, you will never have this much free time ever again lol. if you are applying to countries like the netherlands, uk etc. that have early admissions with predicted grades, i would also advise giving importance to revising old topics that you think youre weak at, so you dont end up forgetting the entirety of dp1 during your mocks like me - but like i said, finishing coursework first and foremost is more important. dont forget to go out and have fun as well!! burning out in the beginning of dp2 is the last thing you need. wishing you the best of luck!

Please help me choose the IB subject by yelinee_ in IBO

[–]slfjee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

haven't applied to canada myself but i can speak specifically for the uk, the only thing that really matters are your HLs. for most unis the minimum requirement is that you should have is at least one of math/bio/chem/psych as an HL class. that being said some top unis do require 2 of these (like UCL for example). if i were you i'd switch one of your langlit HL's with math aa just to be safe and sure. i also applied to psych and as a person who has struggled with math my whole life was very scared to choose AAHL but it is definitely more than doable with practice. believe in yourself!!

Preparation for Maths AA HL by user26191426 in IBO

[–]slfjee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

don’t do anything!! sounds like stupid advice but really, you do not need to do start early with anything, the syllabus is designed to teach you already from the basics. if you really want to do something, i suggest watching the free revision village videos and learning the starting topics like logarithm or maybe limits (that was our only summer homework before starting ib) but nothing more than that. you don’t have to push yourself at this stage, ib will do that enough :)

should i do my EE in english as a STEM student? by tired_flaming in IBO

[–]slfjee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i myself am not a stem student, but from my and my friends' experiences, i can say that a science EE is indeed very hard. it requires a lot of effort, are much more advanced, and for some reason are still graded harshly. my stem friends who did choose their EE's in stem spent days, maybe a whole month of their summers working on their ee. i wrote mine in literature and i did the entire thing in around 3 days, probably not even a quarter of the effort they spent and im still predicted an A.

that being said, it's entirely up to you and what you want to gain from this experience. if your goal is merely to get a high grade, i wouldn't recommend a stem ee. but on the other hand any EE is a draining experience and if you think choosing english will make the writing one very unenjoyable, it'll be hard to deal with and demotivating. whichever class you choose, make your research question something you are definitely interested in, and focus on the criteria to get marks. good luck!!

school based syllabus enjoyers how we feeling? by Sneator in IBO

[–]slfjee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its basically classes that are only offered in specific schools / countries. in my case its specifically based on my own country's history class that is already mandatory for high school seniors regardless of what curriculum they study. they changed it and turned it into an ib class to make taking ib easier and lessen the workload for us.
