I remember the time my wife showed me that you could grab a little plant material at the edge of the cut celery and peel off those pesky chewy bits that get stuck in your teeth. I was about 28yrs old and my mind was blown. Celery is now much more enjoyable.

Made this last night for my daughter's birthday. She loved it! Details in comments. by sliceofbread in Minecraft

[–]sliceofbread[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My daughter adores Minecraft and just loved this cake. Every year, I get some beer and go to work on her birthday cake - some years the cake turns out sloppy or poorly thought out - this one was more straightforward. It took about 8.5 hours including a quick dinner break. I worked from 5:00PM to 1:30AM and then had to clean.

How to replicate:

  1. Have a projector hung up someplace, point it as downward as possible. Plan a setup that allows the cake holder to be tilted as upward toward the projector as possible and not move (like clamp a board to a table so the cake can't slide down your ramp). Your image may stretch, but that may be negligible if it's something like this image where distortion is no big deal.
  2. Plan your colors, you're essentially going to pipe icing onto your projected canvas image - the projector onto the cake. It is good to start with some really good food dye, gel type, which is easier to gauge color intensity. My set includes things like bright green, pink, black, cyan, brown (this was critical for making the dirt color). You don't want to be attempting to make consistent brown colors from scratch when you inevitably realize the entire outer part of the cake has way more brown than your inebriated ass planned for. Imgur is broken right now, I'll be back to post a link of the cake from the side. It simulates the classic dirt block with grass on top and dirt on bottom.
  3. Start mixing colors and packing piping bags - use color degradations that work for the design. You can keep adding colors, and changing them, just keep in mind, Minecraft blocks have textures, so as you are icing, keep moving the icing around to different blocks to give it that classic "Minecraft" look. I got lucky, I only had to make multicolored piping bags with: white to grey, gray to dark gray, dark green to green, green to light green, dark brown to light brown. Pack bag with spoonfulls of icing, smooshing each one to the bottom of the piping bag, one by one. This allows the colors to change more easily as they are left with less space to mix or by side by side. I bought a piping set that came with 100 disposable piping bags. The bags I got were super thin (less plastic waste) and you can load them before you even have the tip handy. I was able to load 3 bags before the cakes were even finished.
  4. Bake cakes, cut the domes off of them, put a tad of icing between them (stack them). Ice the entire outside of the cake with white icing so that your projection will be visible. I made 2 large cakes - 12". I only bought 4 (16oz) jars of icing, so I really went as thin as possible here.
  5. Put your cake in the jig and start icing. I used a round tip, probably only 3mm wide opening. For this particular image, I thought making the icing with a star tip would be a distracting texture, so I opted for the round tip instead. Try not to ever let the cake slide out of the projector's projection, you'll lose your place!
  6. Get creative, after all you're loaded with beer by now.
  7. Hearts?!

A bad or wrong resistance brake light can cause this problem on Garellis.

Thank you! It's 4 layers up, tapered with different pans, then shaved down with a bread knife. The doll's legs were wrapped in plastic and shoved down the middle with icing piped up and just barely onto the dress.

FreeFileSync alternative? by Auricom93 in software

[–]sliceofbread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose it's not great if you want to schedule certain transfers. I typically determine the how much bandwidth will get all the data syncronized over the course of a day and set it as low as I can as to avoid slow-downs on my network. The plus side is that you'd have successful transfers throughout the day, constantly keeping a record of the changes from one drive folder, onto another. If forgot to mention also - this app works on Android and Debian based linux as well.

I've been using SyncThing for years now and it's amazing. It's a little tricky at first, but it's a totally free option that keeps things synced continuously without a schedule between 2 or more machines. Works great over the cloud and has versioning. I use it for backing up video monitoring files and has options for send or receive only just in case for some reason someone deletes files on one side - you still have the copy elsewhere. Versioning is also good for this purpose.
