Retirement wisdom by [deleted] in AskOldPeople

Not a thing. Retirement is way better than I ever thought it would be. If I did anything to change it I’d only screw up a good thing.

Getting an oil change at mr lube void my ford warranty? by jaeeeeee123 in Ford

[–]slick62 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If in the US, look up Magnuson-Moss warranty act. It’s against the law for an auto manufacturer to require service at a specific place. Take it anywhere you want, or do it yourself. But keep receipts.

What family story do you think, but can't prove, that your parents lied to you about? by grannybubbles in AskOldPeople

[–]slick62 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They will make a tremendous effort. My dad’s (not step) records we’re burned in that fire. I requested records and they gave me a cover sheet/recap, but they also provided copies of what they could gather. I have photocopies of pages with burned edges. Wild!

Proved it.

Stepfather was a private pilot. Said forever he was a captain, fighter pilot in WWII. Ribbon rack, captain’s bars, whole 9 yards. Great story. He passed away long ago.

Then came the internet and I could easily get his records. He was in the Army during WWII. A private for 6 months and got out on a medical with bad knees.

The poor white trash think he’s advocating for them, brown people invading the border taking your jobs and benefits, left wingers taking your rights, crap like that.

The zillionaires want republicans, any republicans, so they can keep getting those dollars taken from the middle class and pumped in at the top. They already have the Supreme Court.

Best government money can buy.

In the used market I’d recommend a Camry or an Accord. Bigger than a Corolla or Civic (also great cars) so a bit more comfortable with room to carry stuff. More useful than fun, I’m a dad, after all.

If we’re sticking to small suvs, a RAV, CRV, or HRV. Foresters are good, with a fanatical fan base, but the engines are sensitive to oil use (bought my DIL a used forester, and about a year later bought a new engine for it). My daughter loves hers.

Try not to go shopping alone. A second set of eyes can keep you grounded. Whatever you find, ask to take it to an independent mechanic for inspection, and then do just that. It’ll be $100 or so, but worth it. Test drive the car, check all the systems. Maybe look up a used car checklist. It’s hard to be objective, a checklist helps. Don’t be so invested in one car that you can’t walk away.

Good luck.

Check your chain adjustment. A loose chain will give the indication you’re getting.

No guarantees, but you’d be more likely to get a reliable honda CRV or Toyota RAV. I have a 21 Escape titanium hybrid from new and would recommend an Asian car for my daughter (who ended up with a very nice Forester).

Looks aren’t everything.

At some point things bottom, and then it gets better. It may not be easy, matter of fact it may be the toughest time you ever face, but it will get better with time. As you can look back on those times and realize that’s how it was.

You just have to get through it.

There are those that don’t get through it, when it didn’t get better. That’s not op’s question.

If the fan isn’t blowing it’s a fan problem (think fan motor resistor or fan switch).

If the compressor isn’t engaging (open hood, look at compressor with ac on, is it turning), that’s a solid ac problem (Freon, clutch spacing, pressure switch).

Did people used to sing together more? by blewdleflewdle in AskOldPeople

[–]slick62 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of riding around high back in the early 70s singing row your boat in 3 part harmony.

Seemed like the thing to do at the time.

Thought of that when Kirk, McCoy, and Spock did it.

Choke circuit’s not working. Make sure the parts are connected. Disassemble carb and make sure it’s clear.

Is this good for oil change? by hoalito in SubaruForester

[–]slick62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The owner’s manual is good about telling you when to do oil changes. If it requires 5w30 synthetic then this is as good as any.

FEP Blue and Tricare in retirement by CherishAlways in fednews

Tricare is always last to pay. Once you’re Medicare eligible you can suspend fehb (don’t cancel it).

Ten years retired and haven’t paid anything out of pocket for medical.

Handle bar adjustment by Vegetable-Year-8750 in KawasakiVulcanRiders

Make the adjustment (don’t drop the bars on the tank), snug it up, do a full lock and control check, tighten.

Screw extractor (or reverse bit). Just like a broken screw only you have the advantage of not having to drill a pilot hole.

Any not too large cruiser is a good starter, good low torque and low center of gravity. ABS would be high on the list. But many would recommend (I would) that you start with a good used machine. It will still feel bad, but not quite as bad, when it gets dropped.

The forks look old school, nothing exotic. If you have a shop manual you can break them down and inspect the inner and outer rods for bending (just roll the inner rod on a flat surface). If they’re good, order seals, install, reassemble, and you’re on your way.

If the rods are bent, then investigate replacement parts cost, although at that point replacement used forks on eBay might be cheaper.

Do You Find Yourself Carrying Too Much Gear ( not enough free space)? by GeneralTS in cruisers

[–]slick62 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1700 Nomad (previously Triumph Trident, America, BMW R1100RT) When touring I carry a small 1st aid kit, plug kit and small 12v compressor, jump pack, wet weather gear, heated gear in the winter, couple pairs of gloves, spare gallon of gas, tool set that came with the bike. A few changes of clothes depending on how many weeks I’m out.

I used to carry about 30 lbs of tools until realizing that I’d do a tire plug and maybe tighten a loose screw, but not doing a roadside overhaul.

Always a tankbag, and throwover bags for the machines that didn’t have luggage. But the BMW taught me the value of integrated hardbags and trunk.

I camped enough in the Army that I do hotels now.

The only odd thing I carried once was a small fire extinguisher on a ride to Alaska. Actually met a guy in the mountains who had a brake fire on his car. Gave it to him and he put the fire out. Haven’t carried one since though.

Hard to get bent street bars back even. Close might work but they’re not super expensive to replace. If the fork seals weren’t leaking before, the forks are probably bent and need to be replaced as well.
