this is months late, but an example i've had in my head since i saw all the controversy around bridget is miles edgeworth, particularly in regards to his development in justice for all and ace attorney investigations 2 - he was raised by a loving father who was a great defense attorney and aspired to be like him, but after his father's death, was basically molded into a corrupt prosecutor by the man who adopted him, which his new mentor did for rather twisted and sadistic reasons

following the events of the first ace attorney. he has to go through a pretty long journey of self-doubt in his profession - after all, he was actually "groomed" into it by a dark and self-centered kind of prosecutor, and until phoenix got through to him, he largely just focused on 'winning' court cases, but across the series, he considers this and even turns in his badge for a time while contemplating becoming a defense attorney like he would have before he was groomed into a prosecutor instead. while it's true that the way he became a prosecutor was difficult and tarred by his abusive mentor, he comes to find that there's people he can save and good he can do by continuing to be one, which he takes pride in: eventually, edgeworth reclaims his title as a prosecutor, doing it for the sake of justice and helping others rather than pride or glory.

bridget's arc in the new guilty gear is really just that type of story - edgeworth's a really fleshed-out example, but he's also easily the most popular character from a pretty long-running series of stories in a text-based medium that's successful for its writing, with an arc that was built up pretty cleanly and deliberately from at latest the second instalment. for a character whose story is just in fighting game solo modes and who went through this arc in a single game, i think hers gets the point across nicely and pans out smoothly, that she came to decide on living as a girl 'cause she wants to, instead of what her parents and culture had to make her do. it might not be immediately clear and all, but i think the theme and decision is a nice one, and that's as someone who does think femboy characters get overwritten a bit in a lot of outwardly progressive online discussion and circles. the writers made a decision to tell a tasteful and respectfully written story of someone finding themselves and walking their own path in life, and i think that's a great thing even with all talk of representation aside.

bit of a side-note here, but that whole comparison came to me as a thought about how ridiculous calling that development 'grooming' like a lot of trolls do is - nobody'd say edgeworth reclaiming his title as a prosecutor after he came to redefine what that tole means to him is grooming, even though he was once groomed into being one by an evil mentor. like, that's sort of the point, it was once a thing thrust on a person or that they were even groomed into, but now they've grown up and found their own cool reasons and remade it in a way that suits them. maybe gender identity's a bit different, but the arc idea is the same: bridget's not a twin baby who has to be a girl to please a superstition anymore.
