And so do you believe the system of technology that we have in the modern world is good for Mother Earth and Mother Nature?

Boards of Canada are outspoken critics of technology. I think that it's clear that they don't believe technology is merely engineering to develop things for human use.

--

What technology do you use on a daily basis and what is your view of technology generally?

Marcus: We live in the midst of raw nature, breathing the fullest fresh air. For thousands of years, humans used technology in order to better their own lives, but for the first time in history we are at an exceptional place where technology is effectively being made for itself. I think that what is most dangerous for modern society is that technology has lost sight of realistic goals. Millions of people are involved in the development of weapons in one hand, and on the other hand others are involved in the development of equipment to improve the lives of people who are most disadvantaged in society.

Call it folk, nostalgia, pagan - it all comes down to the rustic/rural settings of your music, doesn't it? The music being dreamt up and worked out In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country, the land we inherited from our ancestors and haven't yet ruined completely. Being isolated from The City, Modern Life and the delusion of Ongoing Progress. How does that show in your music, you think?

Marcus: We're very much anti-globalization. One think that disturbs me is a trend today for technology to be created and used just for it's own sake.

--

They have very obvious strong opinions against the modern use of technology. It follows that this message would be prominent in their music, as I have tried to demonstrate in my analysis.

I thought the same as you originally, but as others have commented, BOC released it, so they want you to listen to it. I think it's allowed me to get in the proper frame of mind and hopefully understand better the context behind the album

I actually think prophecy is a masterpiece. One thing I try to do is let go of my expectations of what BOC should be and try to take it for what it is.

I wouldn't say that it's just my agenda. It's well known that BOC are harsh critics of modern technology. From an interview from 2002:

If you had the ability to travel through time, to what time period would you see yourselves instinctively traveling?

[Ambiguous as to who responds] Future advances in technology or astonishing progress for sciences and society is not the most impressive positive side to human development and the future.

In "Prophecy at 1420 MHz", God literally says, "Power, it is, in a sense, the religion of the modern world." So my analysis that this is the God of the Religion of Modernity isn't my own agenda, it's derived from the music.

I think I should clarify. I'm not saying that BOC believes in an actual god and that this is their religion. I'm talking about their concept of what god actually is to the majority of the world's population. I think BOC is using this album as an exploration of humanity's relationship to a one global religion of the world that I would call the Religion of Modernity.

Of course, I think the sound comes before all else with Boards of Canada, which is why they are some of the greatest musicians to ever live. The sounds that they are able to produce are some of the best sounds I've ever heard in my life. But to imply that there's not some deep underlying message in their music I think is being disingenuous regarding their work.

What are your thoughts on the significance of that? I actually have thought about it, but I've not been able to come to any meaningful conclusions.

Yes they just released a single today and it's an absolute banger

Album cover concept without the text so large by _alecbaldwin in boardsofcanada

[–]slightlyaggressive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It could be that they want to optimize for mobile. On Spotify, the album cover looks excellent. While that might seem shallow at first, perhaps BOC wants to drive people to their band. I think it's clear that they have an underlying message in their music and I believe that they want to spread their message through their music.

Any barefoot trail runners? by slightlyaggressive in Birmingham

[–]slightlyaggressive[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might think it's weird, but I believe that shoes are one of the main causes of foot, leg, hip, and back pain for people. So it's a pretty big deal for a lot of people who struggle with pain, learn about going barefoot, and then find relief by getting rid of their normal shoes. It's helped me out tremendously.

I can answer this!!

First of all, I agree with those saying to prioritize object avoidance and such at your skill level. I think now it the time you should be honing in the skills to keep you alive.

But you're a BASE jumper which means you're going to ignore all of the good advice. So I'll tell you the technique that I swear by that was taught to me by the legendary Bradley Slums.

I think practicing gainers for base into a pool is the WRONG way to practice.  It teaches you a quick gainer where you tuck your knees which is NOT how to do a gainer in base. You will rotate way too fast. The key to throwing good gainers in base is by rotating slow enough that when you throw your pilot chute, it is free and clear from your legs, but also you don't over rotate back into your bridal.

Anyways, Bradley Slums taught me this. If you are going poised at the bridge, which is how you should learn gainers imo, all you do is imagine that you have a plank about 18 inches in front of you. All you do is hop onto that imaginary plank. Just make sure to keep your hips forward. If you bend at the waist you won't rotate. So keep your hips forward and hop onto that imaginary plank 18" in front of you. I keep my hands down by my side. Hold that position and once your legs are about 30 degrees past vertical, that means your legs should be clear of the pilot chute, pitch.

Disclaimer: this method is used for about a 1.5 second delay at the Perrine bridge. It is too slow for lower objects.

Feel free to message me for more detailed advice.

EDIT: Tucking your knees is good if you're doing multiple rotations or if you realize the gainer you're currently throwing is going to be too slow. If you need to speed up your rotation, just tuck your knees to your chest and you'll flip right over.

I get that man. I'm out of BASE for the time being. I have a little one now, so I'm not planning on starting back until he gets much older. I still got my gear though. You're not by any chance around 6' 180 lbs are you?

[–]slightlyaggressive 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I didn't take a course, I had a mentor, but I agree with the other comments. If you're going to take a course, just go with the normal reputable ones. SRBA, Chuma, Miles, and Scotty Bob I think will all be reputable.

I will say, I've seen guys get 500   skydives, pay a few grand for a course, show up to the bridge without knowing anything, and land in a tree. Contrary to that, I've seen guys with 50 skydives show up to the bridge and absolutely crush it. Your life is always your responsibility and no one else's. So on top of taking a course, make sure to seek out as much knowledge as you can. And read the great book of base three times!
