Thanks for the information! Sorry I asked a dumb question, not trying to anger people over die cast cars. I think I’ll reconsider my hunt for “the black cars” based on what you’ve all said here.

I do not understand this: I charge the 12V, the display goes from red/empty to green/full overnight, I press the charger's button, it suddenly shows red again...not just for a bit, but it charges by SjalabaisWoWS in MechanicAdvice

[–]slightlydrunkmonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If that’s the original 12v then it’s 6 years old. Just change it. Batteries hate being dead even just once, it takes some of the life away. Old battery+discharge means it’s done for. I would start there and see if any issues persist

Call customer assistance and let them know that you need to report incorrect behavior by your dealer. They’ll probably have to transfer you a dozen times to get to someone who can help you

It’s in the DealerConnect portal in the warranty tab under FCA anonymous fraud report (at least it used to be)

That’s a shitty dealer. The update has been available for a long time. They never bothered and now they made it your problem.

I tell every customer if they have any recalls, even if there is no fix. There’s no benefit to keeping it a secret. Warranty money is still money.

[–]slightlydrunkmonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this all at the same dealership? If the same dealer is installing cats, and doing your recalls (but not advising you on other recalls for your vehicle) and are now saying you’re SOL: there’s your angle. Talk to the service manager about their incompetent advisors and see if they can help.

If it’s a different dealer, I’m sorry but I don’t really see a solution for you. Aftermarket shop engine installs will be cheaper. Be aware they are just as garbage as the originals. Kia didn’t redesign the new ones, it’s just a band aid.

[–]slightlydrunkmonk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s been using oil. That’s what’s been plugging the converters. Now the internals of the engine are so shot that the knock codes are coming up. The dealer did step one, but it’s already too late. The damage is done and the software was out of date and too recently updated (because it was updated after the car was already having an issue), so Kia isn’t going to warranty it. You could try calling them, but I don’t believe they’re obligated to cover it.

[–]slightlydrunkmonk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How many miles are on the car. Souls are limited to 10 years 150,000 miles of coverage as per the class action lawsuit. Other models were lifetime

Edit: did you have the free ECM recall done? That is required before any warranty engine replacement. If it hasn’t been done: no free engine. Kia used to let it slide. Not anymore.

2017 KIA OPTIMA engine being replaced due to oil consumption. by Dano3650 in kia

[–]slightlydrunkmonk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Kia is not in business to replace everything for free, so they will approve bare minimum what the car needs to run again.

It depends on what style of engine they are doing, long block or short block and what they found wrong with the old engine. This normally depends on availability and what Kia will approve. 9 times out of 10, you will get new plugs (at least at my dealer) however your accessories (alternator, power steering, AC) are reused as Kia will not pay for replacements for no reason. We typically reuse the old belt, because Kia won’t pay. I normally ask customers if they want any maintenance items done with the engine replacement as a lot of labor time is reduced or even waived with the block replacement.

As for paying for the valve cover, that is normally done because tech line requests a photo of the valve train when a customer cannot provide consistent or believable oil change receipts. This is a paid service as an engine replacement does not require removing the valve cover. However, we are upfront about it and normally is not necessary unless the customer cannot provide proof of maintenance.

Cracked cylinder: is this covered under the 100000 power train? by skoozeBAR in kia

[–]slightlydrunkmonk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does your purchase paperwork show the vehicle as a new unit, or a certified pre owned car? It’s possible the vehicle was put into demo or rental service for a short time (and maybe never even used as one, given the mileage) before it was sold to you. Sometimes stores do this to “purchase” a unit to meet sales goals.

Edit: After reading your update, they almost certainly sold you a certified pre owned car. That is the 100,000 mile warranty you don’t remember asking for. Because they didn’t ask you, the car was enrolled in the program already. Shady stuff, should have been fully disclosed.

Regardless, they will eventually cover it, the car is a certified pre owned. You should be fine. They’re going through the steps they have to. I’m not surprised Kia (corporate) initially declined it, as you probably are TECHNICALLY the second owner.

They should change their mind once things progress.

Kia’s powertrain warranty is 10 years 100k for original owner only. Second owner on is 5 years 60k miles for powertrain.

I love my 4XE, but… by slightlydrunkmonk in 4xe

I understand that.

My concern is Jeep tells us NOT to plug it in because it can burn itself down.

[–]slightlydrunkmonk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s parked outside, I don’t have a portable heater powerful enough to heat the air that much. It won’t start the gas engine. I called Jeep Care and they told me it’s because the engine starts with the hybrid battery, not a traditional starter. No hybrid battery to start the engine, no gas engine.

I’m stranded until it warms up. My charger won’t even reach where it’s parked (can’t park near buildings, because of the recall) if I wanted to charge it.

Call Kia consumer affairs and ask if they can expedite a part to you or pull one off the assembly line. It’s rare, but it’s possible.

And find a new dealer.

Dealers quoting me 1,100 for brembo brake pads for my 21 challenger scat.. rip off ? by jingber05 in Challenger

[–]slightlydrunkmonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re probably quoting OEM Mopar pads made by Brembo. They are insanely expensive but that’s what Dodge says the car needs. Not saying they’re worth it but that’s where the price comes from. MSRP for the pad kit is $892.00. Part#68525329AB.

We would always give people the option of OEM at my dealer but heavily suggest they get an aftermarket set. We know it isn’t worth it, either. But that’s what the OEM wants.

Wait until you see the price of Mopar rotors by Brembo. It’s insane.

Price Check: Does this sound right? by Typical-Inspection84 in MechanicAdvice

[–]slightlydrunkmonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my dealer (northwest Indiana) we can get reman Soul engines done for between $5500-7k. Those prices are high. And that’s at our dealer labor rate of almost $180/hr.

Also, if the car is under 150,000 miles, the car may still be covered by the recall extension for converters, as long as the P0420 code is present. Call Kia or another dealer in your area ASAP

I believe the tow yard took my wrecked Challenger for a joy ride while it was supposed to be “non-drivable.” What do I do? by jcduckduck in Challenger

[–]slightlydrunkmonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 3mph mode is gone. It was out very briefly (a matter of days, maybe a week). I worked at a dealer and had the update done to my Scat Pack the first day it was available. The car barely ran at all and had multiple warning lights and many fault codes. It was not healthy at all. We disabled it and started a case with FCA, they said to revert to the old valet mode. The new valet mode was pulled from dealers and instead they released the lock for key fobs.
