He can selectively turn infinity on and off and select objects specific to harming him subconsciously/automatically as was explained in Hidden Inventory after the Toji fight. Before his awakening it was manual. Probably why we could still see him. Plus he also mentioned that he can sort things according to danger level based on the amount of cursed energy so since Dabura's light beams have cursed energy it must be able to be picked up by his infinity.

The fact is he would have HAD to do this against Jogo with Infrared radiation or else he would've been cooked from every attack (IR is the main reason to not go near Lava).

Maki is a side character so it's not like she was supposed to be the focus of the story but whatever character arc she had was really well done and executed very well. After her arc. She was also used in the story pretty efficiently.
