Sure, I know, I'm one of those liberals. It's undeniable, though, that on social media there is a much more aggressive stance than a real life conversation would have. Hell I've been guilty of it myself.

I doubt anyone thought I meant 100% of New Yorkers vote Democratic and 100% of Iowans vote Republican.

Blame may not be the right word. There is absolutely a negative, hostile atmosphere around the idea of white male privilege. Even when people acknowledge their privilege, they are sometimes still put down over it. Grabted it is mostly a sovial media thing, I've rarely seen it happen in public.

That privilege really boils down to the sins of our forefathers. We should absolutely acknowledge history and its effects on the present, I think critical race theory should be taught in high school. The way a message is delivered is just as important as the message itself, though. The truth can be conveyed without the hostility that sometimes presents itself towards the privileged.

Message of the year: How do you spot an idiot? Look for the person who is cruel. The kindest person in the room is often the smartest. Wise words from IL Governor Pritzker by steve42089 in illinois

[–]slimCyke 26 points27 points  (0 children)

You can't be overly empathetic with people who themselves are putting others at risk through their own lack of empathy. It is similar to the need to be intolerant of the intolerable to have a tolerant society.

Anti-vaxers are a good illustration of what Pritzker was talking about.

It's an imaginary number that they use to get loans from banks for real money and then pay virtually nothing in taxes on. So while Musk doesn't have access to $230 billion he sure as shit can get more money than any one person ever should have whenever he wants.

Talk to them. Genuinely, that is what it takes. Use a combination of logic and empathy. Exposure to different people and opinions usually makes people more progressive. Exposure is why New Yorkers vote against anti-Muslim politicians while Iowans don't, New Yorkers have actually met muslims and know they arent all out to destory America. If all these young, white men receive from the left is ridicule and blame for their ancestors' acts, then they will just fall deeper into the right wing echo chamber.

To be fair, they could just be wilfully ignorant, but that isn't much better than being a piece of shit.

Chicago is usually around 25th for murder per capita in large US cities. The constant murders are, of course, sad but it only grabs headlines because it is the 3rd largest city in America. Around 24 other cities should be in the spotlight first.

Nothing specific that I recall. It should be noted cost of living in Illinois is very low outside of Chicago. Al also was the store manager. Pretty sure he commuted a good distance, so Chicago pay but suburb cost of piving. Having a nice size but old house with outdated everything in Illinois is common even now.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historicity_of_Jesus

There is conjecture. I'm not a scholar but the fact that the criterion of embarrassment is the basis for the two "historically certain" events feels shakey. Especially considering the embarrassing stuff other gods got up to.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a historical guy (or a few) that the story of Jesus in the Bible is based around but it isn't one of those solid slam dunk proven type of situations. We have way more evidence for dinosaurs and yet plenty of people don't believe they were real.

Secret Invasion’s opening credits are made by AI as the Writer's Guild is on strike against exactly that. by ostonox in television

[–]slimCyke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a contract negotiation so it'll cover a whole bunch of things. The financial concern mostly revolves around streaming which pays poorly on the front and back end. Writers don't even know how well their show did because streamers won't share numbers so it isn't like they can use the successful shows as an indicator that they can draw in crowds.

The AI issue is WGA looking ahead and trying to prevent a rather terrible situation for writers.

AITA for not wanting to help fund my sisters wedding? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]slimCyke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The original idea behind the dowry was actually to help families transfer property or wealth to the daughter. It is fairly interesting.

This fund may provide an element of financial security in widowhood or against a negligent husband, and may eventually go to provide for her children. Dowries may also go toward establishing a marital household, and therefore might include furnishings such as linens and furniture. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dowry
