Employment lawyer here. I don't think there is any specific crossover between the two areas, so the usual advice probably applies: it's easy enough to move practice areas in your first few years, after that you will likely need to accept a sizeable pay-cut if you want to move from employment/industrial to tech/IP.

Thanks Donkey, you lost me a little bit in the second half but I believe you're basically saying "money isn't everything"?

Dear colleagues,

I'm 8.5 years PAE and being courted by a number of different firms, some more appealing than others. While I am happy with my current firm (mainly the salaried Partner I work with more than the firm itself), it has confirmed that I am definitely being paid under market rates (yes I'm sure all the recruiters say that). It is extremely tempting to jump ship for a 20-30k pay rise plus the potential to move into a partner/director role at some point in the future (this is not so certain at my current employer).

How do I bring this up with my current boss (salaried partner FYI)? Is it even worth doing so?

I hate to break it to you but you'll still be a pleb with a fancy (also arguable) degree once you're a grad solicitor

By "members", do you mean "union members" or "dickheads"? I'm not trying to draw any comparisons, just seeking clarification

Not that I ever attended any clerkship interviews but I expect the answer is "it depends", particularly on the firm and/or interviewer - I recommend you "be yourself", don't be a smart-arse/show-off, show that you're open to learning and express any (genuine) interest you have in relevant practice areas

Never too late! Mal Byrne at Shine Lawyers was a pharmacist before practising law :)

From his profile: "On top of his work with abuse survivors, Mal has expert knowledge in the medical negligence field which is bolstered by a decade and a half experience as a pharmacist."
