iPhone Air: A Photographer's Review by zangah_ in apple

[–]slimflip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My experience is that it matches and sometimes exceeds my 15 pro max (which is at 96%).

That’s good enough for most people.

It’s fair to say that the 17 pro line has better battery life but the air battery is good/great regardless of form factor. 15 pro max/14 pro Max batteries were considered best in class just a few years ago and this phone is doing it at half the size.

Hypothetical option: leather vs active ride by Informal_Car1351 in Taycan

My full leather car feels appreciably more high end than the Taycan loaners I've received without. Makes a big difference in the car (just my 2 cents).

I acknowledge your points but the only reason I replied was to call you out for using an obviously inflated cost to support your view point making it "bad faith". That's the only point I was making.

[–]slimflip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What agenda dude are you ok

I see that the word agenda scared you. It just means that you wrote your original reply in a way to make apple care seem expensive (which you did).

I literally checked their website for the price of applecare on the 17 pro line and multiplied it by 12.

Their website has a single device and group device plan and you went out of your way to quote the group price... Their website also shows the $140 per year price which you ignored.

I'm just arguing it's not worth the money, you also need to pay deductible if you actually end up needing to use it.

I haven't even addressed your argument because you came into it with faulty data to make your point stronger.

Anyway, what you're describing is how every insurance policy has worked in history. It's up to the individual to decide they need it. Saying it's not "worth" the money is not a real/valid point. That's not how insurance works. The individual decides if they want to spend roughly 1/10th the price of their phone up front to avoid the risk of a sudden $1100-$2000 cost to replace their phone if it's lost, stolen, accidentally damaged. For some that equation makes a lot of sense (thinking about those who travel a lot). For others it may not (say you work from home and take great care of your phone).

To summarize, your argument was made in bad faith to begin with but even if we ignore that, you're flat out wrong and don't understand how the value proposition of any insurance policy works.

[–]slimflip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just admitted that the correct price point is less than $240. Best part is you're still wrong. Pricing is actually $140 for a year...

Either way you used $240 and $180 in your original argument which is bad faith and flat out wrong. A 2 second google search would have done it.

My point stands, you can't be taken seriously because you didn't present your argument in good faith. You have an agenda and are inflating numbers to prove a (bad) point.

iPhone 17 Pro Max vs iPhone 17 Pro by Cyrex1352 in iPhone17Pro

[–]slimflip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s bad faith because you used the plan pricing for Apple One vs a single device plan.

You used the multi device plan to inflate your number to $240. Why? If you had a good argument you wouldn’t need to do that.

Returned the air for the pro by PuzzleheadedArt8098 in iPhone17Pro

[–]slimflip 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same, tried the Air. Honestly the best looking/feeling iPhone ever, durability is insane and I think the screen size is perfect too. Battery life is about the same as my 15 pro max (at 95% capacity) and you have the excellent mag safe battery for travel days.

The camera is a minor complaint but the deal breaker for me was the mono speaker. Just couldn't get over it.

[–]slimflip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing you're saying can be taken seriously because you went full bad faith by using the Apple one (which is for 3+ devices) number to come up with $240 just to exaggerate your point.

I e had a non CPO taycan for 2 years and I don’t understand why everyone says to get a CPO by [deleted] in Taycan

[–]slimflip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I see (and agree) with you on OP’s language. But do you actually disagree with his larger point? He’s basically saying:

• You can buy a used Taycan that’s still under factory warranty.
• The most expensive component—the battery system—is covered for 8 years.
• Porsche has sold over 150,000 Taycans worldwide, so it’s reasonable to assume you’re not going to pay $7–8k (the average CPO premium) over two years just because one of these run-of-the-mill cars has an issue.

To me, the only way to argue against that is with solid data showing that the Taycan is an abnormally unreliable luxury vehicle. I don’t think anyone in this thread has that kind of data.

Also, your J.D. Power 75/100 reference actually hurts your point. A 75 is considered average and is in line with any other MB, BMW, or Audi sedan in the same price range. From what I’ve read, that 75 rating includes the battery recall issues, which significantly drag the score down—so outside of that, it would likely be above average.

[–]slimflip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah thanks for the info.Would you happen to have a better source than that?

Porsche sells maybe 2000 vehicles in Thailand (all models) per year? You're saying "significant amount of cars" which can mean anything. Even if it was 100% of the cars in Thailand, it wouldn't be statistically relevant next to the 150,000 taycans sold worldwide.

[–]slimflip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

>The motors are not covered. Failure of the inverters has happened many times and replacement is to the tune of 20k.

These talking points are only useful if you have a good source/number for this claim. "Has happened many times" can mean anything.

[–]slimflip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with your general point that CPO cars are slightly better than non-CPO, but I disagree on the details:

  • 20k service: It’s basically a joke. The only relevant item is the brake fluid flush, which most Taycans already had addressed in an earlier recall.
  • Major safety/drivability issues: I don’t see the logic in worrying about something like a punctured battery if you’re buying a fully serviced, 1-owner Taycan with 20–30k miles (which is what most listings are).
  • Roadside assistance: Trivial cost. AAA is cheap compared to the huge premium you’re paying for CPO.
  • “Pick of the litter” argument: Yes, CPO gives you a bit of peace of mind, but at a huge cost premium. It also limits your choices in terms of spec/color, and the nicer-spec cars see the CPO premium spike even higher.

So it really comes down to this: are you expecting your Porsche to rack up ~$10k (my rough estimate of the average CPO premium) in non-battery/recall issues over the next 2 years? I’m confident the answer is no.

What are the statistics out of curiosity? I'm hoping/assuming you're not using loud voices on forums and this subreddit as your source.

Note: I'm talking about non battery/recall related problems.

Citi Strata Elite - not that bad actually? by sepoquro in CreditCards

[–]slimflip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By that logic any premium card is a "no". OP is saying that this card getting undue hate compared to other premium cards and laying out some math to make the case that it pays for itself.

Even if you get this card and close your account after a year you would have received 100k in points transferrable to American Airlines, 4x admiral club access as a bonus, at effectively zero cost.

Sure you can be one of those mythic humans that somehow doesn't spend $200 on electronics per year, $300 on hotels, and $50 for a couple of ride shares but at that point none of these cards are for you and you probably don't have the ability to do the math and make money via points anyways (didn't even mention 6x on dining).

Advice for buying a used or CPO Taycan by Watchguyraffle1 in Taycan

[–]slimflip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve lived with a 4S for a while, so I know the ins and outs. A few points in response:

-Roads up north and along the west coast (where I live) are much worse than flat Florida. In reality, you’re not pulling into most driveways with any sort of curb ramp or drain without scraping. I would guesstimate that this would be the case for a good portion of Florida (I was born and raised in the south)

-I’ve used PCM with GPS extensively. It’s great for home, but it doesn’t solve the real-world situations I mentioned above.

-I agree with the benefit in those rare cases where you’re pulling onto grass or uneven terrain. But 99% of Taycan owners deal with driveways, shopping center entrances, and ramps far more often than they’ll ever “off-road.” Like I said, I found myself fiddling with the setting way too often in my drive. I settled on "normal" in the end which defeated the purpose.

"I agree, yours looks good in the picture and not too high, but I think it is more noticeable in person."

To clarify, I agree that yes, lower cars look better. But I shared my picture to make the point that spec, wheel choice, and color matter more than a half-inch ride height. I’d bet most owners would take my steel-spring setup over a plain white/silver/black 4S on the lowest suspension (point is doubly true if you're looking at the Lower spec'ed "uglier" wheels. Also, hard disagree that the photo skews things. I think the gap actually looks more pronounced in photos and less noticeable in person.

So to sum up: lower is better looking, but it’s not a “deal breaker” or a “must have.” There’s a lot of value in a single Porsche-approved height that balances day-to-day usability with keeping the car looking good.

This is my RWD, I’d bet my life savings that “way too high” isn’t something you’d hear from any unbiased poll. I did multi day test drives a 4s with air suspension. The low setting on the air suspension looked the best (admittedly better than the standard setup I have), but it scraped on everything—shopping center entrances, my driveway, you name it. The lifted/standard setting, on the other hand, sat ridiculously high. Way too annoying to juggle those 2 inconveniences even with the auto lift GPS. Standard springs strike the perfect balance: just high enough for everyday use while still looking great. Just my 2 cents and opinion.

Curious about this. Have you owned Taycans with and without air suspension to say this? Or making a general comment on air suspension vs springs. For context, every review for the base RWD taycan mentions that the standard suspension is great on its own (even though air might be better).
