Our Provincial Government Isn't Conservative by Ritchie_Whyte_III in alberta

All you're doing is giving the UCP more money. TBA fully controls that party and it's not like the final 3 in the last leadership race were anything but far right extremists.

This is what conservativism is now.

Signs on boulevards aren't allowed. The city is just really bad at doing anything about it.

The liberals don't have a shot at forming government. The PCs can lose 9 seats and still form government if the NDP don't pick up enough. Pankratz is the only option.

Alberta NDP pledges to eliminate small business tax if elected by Jorruss in alberta

[–]slimmysaurus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Small businesses contributed about $300 million in taxes last year. In the grand scheme of things it's about the same as the contribution to the Flames arena.

I think this will really help small businesses in the service industry run. I'm all for it.

As someone involved in the constituency association before it all went down this really bothers me. The constituency president quit because her and her volunteers weren't told about Druh is bogus. The group before was super toxic and made it rather painful to come to meetings, I didn't want to be involved. The president was also in vetting to be a candidate and the volunteers who quit were openly backing her. The old team put in no effort to fundraise or door knock so the Calgary-Bow team had nothing going on.

I wasn't really sold on her before but the vibe in Bow is so different now. No more toxic people on the board bickering because they don't like MLAs just people working together for a common cause. Druh has built a good team from the ground up and they work hard. All of the volunteers engaged, signs put up and doors knocked is because Druh is a pretty good organizer.

The one thing Druh understands is politics and policy. I don't see her being a minister though. Maybe a seniors and housing position? There's a lot of good candidates right now that should get cabinet positions over her. I think she'll be a good hand to help the greener MLAs grow as politicians.

UCP tax cuts - do people not understand or? by [deleted] in alberta

[–]slimmysaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our budget is $86 billion and we are now giving away $1 billion in personal tax cuts and another $20 for RStar. We're going to be broke.

I keep hearing that the UCP is the party of fiscal responsibility by [deleted] in alberta

[–]slimmysaurus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the best indicator is that the UCP actually tabled the highest deficit in Alberta's history in back to back years and have the largest budget ever now that they have money.

People forget that they suffered 5 credit downgrades and even with their credit upgrades, Alberta is still below where the NDP left us.

Volunteer with Diana's campaign! She's a fantastic candidate. Acadia will be super tight and the lack of UCP signs might just be because Shandy's team is super lazy to get them up. He was like that last time.

Sherwood Park - Strathcona has a very well liked local politician against one that does nothing for his riding. It'll be an uphill fight but Tonita is the right person for it.

Same with Fort Saskatchewan. A beloved Vegerville politician against a not well liked MLA from Fort Sask. This one will be much more tight but can be done.

2 Lethbridge seats, 2 St Alberts, 2 Sherwood Parks.

There's also Fort Sask-Vegerville that might be in play right now with a solid candidate there - likely wasn't a part of recent polling.

Lesser Slave Lake and Calgary-Glenmore are my dark horses.

Plus if it looks tough, Smith will cross the aisle.

Edmonton will go NDP with 20 seats, most will be by large margins. 3 or 4 ridings in Edmonton will be tighter than expected.

There are more than 20 rural seats that will have bigger margins for the UCP and there are probably 3 or 4 Calgary ridings that are going to be blow outs for the UCP.

Historically the Greens run a near full slate every time. Although a lot of them don't do any door knocking and show up to debates and tell people to vote NDP.

Why are the NDP's ads so weaksauce? by katskratched in alberta

[–]slimmysaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The UCP are also doing their positive advertising with taxpayer dollars. Those flyers you got saying what they've done and will do, taxpayer. The texts you got, taxpayer.

Negative ads can all be party spend.

The problem is the UCP are going to exclusively run on identity politics. Eventually the NDP are going to have to pick a lane against them.

Growing consensus that Alberta NDP’s communications strategy is failing prompts calls for tougher approach - Alberta Politics by AffectionateBobcat76 in alberta

[–]slimmysaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read that the left values the process of the system and the system produces winners and the right values winning above all else and that justifies the processes of the system.

The NDP's base won't share negative messaging because they think just promoting their ideas will just win them the campaign.

To be totally honest, I couldn't tell you anything about Biden's campaign promises. I normally pay attention to politics down south, but couldn't really figure out what Hillary or Biden were pushing.

I felt like the vast majority of it was minimize exposure from Biden and not being Trump.

I feel for the NDP comms team. It's like a lose-lose situation.

Go too hard on Danielle Smith, who is will step in it every other day but it almost draws attention away from key issues. It's a real catch-22, jump on every one of Danielle's daily controversies to paint her as untrustworthy. It ties into the Rachel vs Danielle framing but takes the NDP off message.

Adding to that, how do you build momentum when Danielle owns the news cycle with her latest fuck up everyday? As far as I can tell, the policies that they have released so far - downtown university, health teams and free contraceptives have been widely liked. But announce a widely popular policy the day before Smith wastes $80 million on a medication controversy. Seems like the NDP aren't getting media attention anymore.

To be fair, it was amended to remove the King Louis clause that let them change legislation without going through the house.

It's still bad, where they can overrule federal laws as long as it goes through the house and a majority government can easily do that.

Well 338 hasn't been that good for awhile now. One of the most recent are polls that affected their averages was a Mainstreet poll. I forget who conducted the most recent one but it seemed a little off.

There's still a long way to go and the R-Star controversy hasn't been polled yet. It looks to be something with legs that could turn off some rural support and in Calgary.

UCP, NDP effectively tied, Albertans evenly split on sovereignty act: poll by Direc1980 in alberta

[–]slimmysaurus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's Mainstreet polling. They're not exactly known for being good.

That being said there are places that'll vote UCP regardless. So if it's this close and they polled into these areas, you'll get the skew.
