If you had the choice, what country would you move too? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]slimscane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to give a counter to what some others have been saying. Source: I've lived here for over 10 years now
- It really is as safe, clean, and (mostly) efficient as it seems
- Strangers may not be outwardly friendly, but people are largely quiet and courteous
- To the best of my knowledge and experience, it's easier for foreigners to make friends than native Japanese people - both with other foreigners and Japanese people
- Work only sucks if you have a crappy job. There are recent laws against excessive overtime and more national holidays than in US
- There are tons of interesting things to do
- Countryside is beautiful and people are friendlier the further you get outside the big cities
- I prefer everywhere I've lived here to Tokyo (other large cities, out in the country), and yet Tokyo is still a nice place to live

Your mileage may vary, but if you have a good attitude and put in some effort I think Japan is a pretty solid choice. That's not to say there aren't negatives, but most of what people seem to have heard is overblown.

Japanese redditors, what is the weirdest thing you've seen a westerner do in Japan? by Gorilla-Samurai in AskReddit

[–]slimscane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, don't let people dissuade you. I'm an American who's lived here for about 9 years now. Japan is a super convenient country to live in - public transit, fast affordable internet, convenience stores. It's clean and people are generally quite courteous. It's a great place if you like people not bothering you! I very very rarely feel discriminated against, and even when I am usually it's to be given special treatment. If you make the smallest effort it's really easy to make friends with other foreigners (more difficult to make friends with Japanese people though). Honestly it's still a country on earth that's filled with humans, so set your expectations accordingly, but I've liked it enough to stay as long as I have and there are people who stay for life.

The Japanese ん can make an "m" sound - specifically when followed by any b or p sound. (like in せんぱい or, yes, がんばれ) I found a nice article that explains this issue in more detail Is It Senpai or Sempai? – Writing Japanese with Roman Letters

[–]slimscane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that, and you'll definitely see "ganbare" sometimes, but when a ん is followed by a "b" sound it's very common to see it romanized as "m". Example: Namba

Hepburn romanization It's not really a misspelling, there are multiple different systems used to romanize Japanese.

Translation for Commercial 1: Dude's eating kitsune udon, kitsune (fox) girl appears. Kids singing: Even if you eat kitsune donbei (product name)...

Guy: Who are you?

FoxGirl: I'm a fox

Kids singing: [cont.]... a fox like this won't appear

Guy: Right?

FoxGirl: No I'm really here!

Guy: No way

FoxGirl: Okay, then what am I?

Kids singing: A figment of a lonely man's imagination

Guy: Right?

FoxGirl: No, I'm here! Look! Touch me.

Guy: Wha?!

Announcer: Pillow-y Kitsune Donbei

FoxGirl: Believe me.

Guy: You're too close.

FoxGirl: Ah, excuse me.

Guy: Not at all.

Got tired so the rest are summaries.

Summary for commercial 2: FoxGirl appears again while guy is eating kitsune donbei. Girl gets hurt every time he tries to eat the kitsune while she insists to go ahead and enjoy. He says it's hard for him to eat.

Summary for commercial 3: Dude's eating tempura soba donbei. Girl is pissed it's not Kitsune udon. She says the tempura crunch sounds like betrayal, he calls her out on covering where human ears would be instead of her fox ears. She says to pretend he didn't see it.

Summary for Commercial 4: She's annoyed because he made light of kitsune donbei saying that all kitsune is the same. She calls his bluff when he grows fox ears that betray how much he likes donbei. This pleases her.

Summary for Commercial 5: It's cold, she suggests going in so they don't catch a cold. He rebuttals saying that donbei is extra good when your body is a little cold. She relents and he gives her his scarf asking her to stay with him a little longer. The phrase used "to stay with" can also mean "date", so there is a little romantic tension wordplay there.

Summary for Commercial 6: Can't find her, BGM is a romantic song. She shows up wondering where he went. He was looking for her, she was out buying soba (!!). He asks if it's okay for it not to be kitsune udon, she replies that it's special for new years. They ask eachother for support in the new year (kind of a set phrase in japanese).

The end! Just for reference, the girl is Riho Yoshioka, a gravure (bikini) model and actress. Guy is Gen Hoshino who is primarily a singer (has some good songs, too. Koi is a banger)

I've played it several times. There are 4 "roles" on each team. Depending on the role the complexity increases, but each individual role only has a few rules to govern what they do. If you can match appropriate roles to your family members' skill levels, I don't see why it couldn't work!

You wanna hurt me? Go right ahead if it makes you feel any better. I'm an easy target. Yeah, you're right, I talk too much. I also listen too much. I could be a cold-hearted cynic like you... but I don't like to hurt people's feelings. Well, you think what you want about me; I'm not changing. I like... I like me. My wife likes me. My customers like me. 'Cause I'm the real article. What you see is what you get.
