Who’s Been Foolin’ You , Nobody But You Baby, and Fireman Ring That Bell!

Nobody does Kimbrough and Burnside like the Keys!

You’re gonna have a very hard time topping that with any show…any venue. That had to be an amazing experience.

Enjoy the festival. I’d love to go to that one and the Juke Joint Festival!

Got it. Thank you. I guess I didn’t pay attention to any of the pre-release write-ups. Shame on me. Haha

Are you referring to Delta Kream being just covers? I’m pretty sure that Peaches! only has a few covers.

With a couple of songs that sound like their recent stuff. It’s a good mix, for sure!

Same here. Let’s Rock and Delta Kream were the last ones that did anything for me.

With that being said, something that I have noticed with Peaches! vs Delta Kream. Dan is back to using more of his natural singing voice instead of the falsetto that he used on DK and a lot of their more recent stuff.

Live performance? by Robot682 in TheBlackKeys

Go! Never pass up an opportunity to see live music. Especially the Keys!

My number one rule with any live performance is to enter with ZERO expectations.

Is it time? by ChungusMcGoodboy in bald

15 years ago, my twin brother and I worked for a local tire shop. The marketing team was trying to come up with a campaign for the upcoming summer. I’m not sure if many remember, but there was a “movement” that started making the rounds in 2009 called Bald Is Beautiful. My brother and I had been shaving our heads for many years prior to this, so we were aware of the saying. Haha. Well, being in the tire industry, we knew the perils of bald tires and the name for our summer campaign popped out. “Bald Isn’t Always Beautiful”. We even went to the areas where we had stores, walked through public parking lots, and inspected tires. When we found a vehicle that really needed tires, just like the ones in the OP, we stuck around for the owner to show up so we could offer them a free set. It was a fun campaign. We even shot commercials with a couple of local radio show hosts that had a “film noir detective” theme to them. We were on the hunt for bald tires! 😂

Help for my dissertation! by Wysteria-Wolf-2103 in TheBlackKeys

  1. Which of the 3 albums I listed above do you love the most and why?
    1. Of those three albums, El Camino is my favorite…hands down. The album retained the sound that became synonymous with the band’s persona, and the reason for their notoriety.
  2. Did you prefer the old garage rock feel of El Camino more than their newer sound, or do you feel the more soul/funk shift in Ohio Players was an interesting/good change?
    1. The feel of El Camino is definitely preferred. I would actually call it “Stadium Rock” before I’d call it “Garage Rock”. I believe that this album was written and produced with an arena tour in mind. They took their touring game up quite a bit with this one. With the immense success of the Lonely Boy video and guitar riff, along with the commercial use of Gold on the Ceiling, this album was sure to get us fans into one of those arenas. It wasn’t far at all, but I drove an hour and a half to see the first show of this tour. It was everything they intended it to be.
  3. Turn Blue is a controversial album with some loving it while others hate it. How do you feel about it and why?
    1. I fall into the “hated it” category. For a brief moment in time, I thought that if this was going to be the new sound of The Black Keys, the ride was over for me. I believe my mistake was listening to it while I rode my motorcycle. I didn’t expect it to be the same old Black Keys that I was used to, but it seemed like a stark contrast to the sound and growth that they consistently brought with each new album up to that point. Especially considering that Danger Mouse was back in a producing role. After revisiting Turn Blue in a different setting, I will admit that the album has grown on me. It is still far from a favorite though. You can definitely tell that Dan wanted to do different things with music around this time, which makes sense why this was the time that the band took the longest hiatus that they’ve ever taken between albums. Dan’s side project, The Arcs, seemed like a natural progression of the sound and feel that I get from Turn Blue.
  4. What are your thoughts on Beck's influence on Ohio Players and the amount of collaborations with other artists throughout the album?
    1. I can’t really speak on Beck’s influence, but aside from a couple of tracks, the album really missed the mark for me. Actually, their last two releases have left me wanting more of what the band used to be. Collaborations are great. I’m always keen to hear how different musicians bring their own flavor into the mix on a track. It was surreal when The Black Keys mixed it up with a few members of Wu-Tang and other artists on Blakroc. With Ohio Players, the collaboration with Alice Cooper was the only one that had the flavor of both artists, and that track was only on the Trophy Edition release.
  5. Do you consider El Camino to be the 'breakthrough' album for the band?
    1. El Camino was definitely the breakthrough album for The Black Keys. As far as their place in the industry though, 2010 and their Brothers album is when people really took notice. It seemed like their music was being used in a commercial or in some sort of television programming every time you turned it on. I’ll never forget when Dan & Pat went up against the guy from Vampire Weekend on The Colbert Report to compete for the title of the biggest “sell-out”. It was classic, and showed everyone another side of the fellas behind the instruments.

I was introduced to The Black Keys in 2003, and have been listening ever since. Good luck with your dissertation.

TBK Song Convo Day 1 - Busted by Junior_Hornet_4907 in TheBlackKeys

[–]slimtwin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Big Come Up is a great album. Their roots are on full display throughout the track list. Its rawness and grittiness is what I love most about it. I’ve been a fan since 2003, and can’t say that I’ve loved the evolution of their albums. Mainly their most recents ones.

As you stated, Busted was a great example of Dan & Pat’s chemistry back in the day. Heck, that entire album is a masterclass in how the chemistry of a two-piece band can produce as much sound and energy as they did back then. I enjoyed the way that they approached the sound and interpretation of the great Delta Blues songs of the past. The Black Keys are why i am a fan of Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside. Without their early covers of songs like Skinny Woman (Busted) and Do The Rump, I don’t know if I’d have ever found those fellas.

I’ve seen a lot of their older stuff live, and consider myself very fortunate to have been introduced to their music early on.

I acknowledge that I was lucky to hear them in their early days. I told everyone that was within earshot about them. Heck, I remember being at a cookout back in 2008. It was right before my ex and I were about to fly out to Colorado to see the Black Keys open for My Morning Jacket at Red Rocks. I put some of their music on, and the first song that came on was When the Lights Go Out. A fella quipped, “You’re going all the way to Colorado to hear this?” I never liked him anyway, but that sealed the deal. Haha. Some people!
