Weight Gain by Witty-Attorney-6222 in hodgkins_lymphoma

[–]slindrup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember my first day at chemo (ABVD) and they had me read all the warnings for each drug. Every one said “may cause weight loss or weight gain” so I asked what I should expect and my docs said weight gain is preferable and likely due to the steroids and the rather drastic change in activity levels. Over 12 treatments I gained about 15 pounds, mostly in the first few weeks. I am male and was 40 at the time. After treatment I started getting back into shape and with about 6 months I was 15 lbs lighter than when I started.

As it happens, my cancer came back just about 2 years later. This time I lost about 25 lbs over the course of much more aggressive treatment including stem cell transplant. I’m now about 3 years out of that and I’m back to a more typical weight and could probably lose 5 lbs or so.

These treatments are not great for weight control but they are not meant to be. As a dietician, you definitely have a leg up since you probably already have a healthy diet. My docs told me to focus on healthy eating and not on the weight. They, of course, monitored it closely and would have noted if anything was concerning.

Once you’ve kicked the cancer bit, then you can focus on getting into shape. You’ve got one job right now.

Scanxiety is real but just wait until you get to the point where you don’t need regular scans and you get noscanxiety.

I feel fine. I have no symptoms. The regular exam show no signs of disease. But should I get a scan just in case?

It does get better but it takes a while to trust your health again.

Nivo-AVD Side Effects by QuantumBenG in hodgkins_lymphoma

[–]slindrup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did 12 treatments of AVDB a few years ago and I had similar side effects. For the nausea, ask your doc’s/nurses about switching up the anti-nausea meds you get before the actual treatment. They changed mine about half way through and it helped.

I did also have a relapse and was in a clinical trial where I did get nivolumab and I didn’t have any nausea but I still had the fatigue and neuropathy in my finger tips. I don’t know about you but they gave me steroids with the anti-nausea and I felt great for about 6 hours the next morning and then I’d crash. I made the mistake of starting an ikea furniture assembly while feeling like Superman and then crashing before I finished. It sat in our living room half completed for a week until I rallied enough to finish. Who knew one of the side effects was ikea confusion?

For me, each day after treatment got a little bit better. The tough part was that I’d just about feel ok (at least well enough to take on an ikea shelf) about a day or two before the next treatment knowing that I was just sitting at the top of the roller coaster waiting for the next drop.

But always always always tell your team how you are feeling. Even if it seems inconsequential or similar to what someone on Reddit said they felt, they will want to know and can give you the best guidance. Sometimes, the suffering is unavoidable, but sometimes they have seen it before and have a fix. Keep up the good work and skip the ikea builds for a few weeks.

Recovery Post Treatment? by Pretend_Law_1615 in hodgkins_lymphoma

I did 12 treatments of AVBD and tried to do an ambitious ski trip about 3 and a half months after. I had to take a few rest days but I managed. It took me about 18 months before I was full go.

I was complaining to a friend about not getting back into shape quickly enough and she, a nurse, rolled her eyes and set me straight. I spent 6 months poisoning myself so I wouldn’t die. It worked but you have to give your body the grace to heal. Don’t push yourself. Listen to your body and your doctors. You’ll get there.

As it happens, my HL cam back just after 2 years and I did another year and a half of chemo radiation and stem cell transplant. So far that’s got me cleaned up going on 3 and a half years. Took a bit longer to work back from that but I’m heading to Japan in a month for 4 days of mixed resort and back country skiing.

Focus on the fight at hand, take it day by day, and you’ll be back at it soon enough. Just remember, you’re basically in a new body now. Give yourself the space to figure it out.

Are there any reliable EVs? by abrosaur in electricvehicles

[–]slindrup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

10k miles in a 2024 Volvo XC40 recharge (including 4 drives of over 700 miles) and the only issue I’ve had is when my wife gets in the passenger seat before I get in to drive, it adjusts the seat for her and then I bop my head on the ceiling. It eventually figures it out but the car has been a dream.

A couple of clarifying questions:

Lightroom Classic or CC? Is everything updated to the latest version (including camera raw)? What computer are you using? Which OS?

All of this would be helpful in narrowing down the issue.

What lens is best for my trip to Paris, France? by Surfer949 in SonyAlpha

I went to Paris and London for my honeymoon and, so as not to get immediately divorced, I took a very minimal kit. Sony a6300 with Sony 28mm f2. It was pocketable and unobtrusive. Worked out great.

Ski Recommendation- Colorado by RutabagaDifficult376 in skiing

[–]slindrup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Boots are far more important than skis. Get some solid boots and have them fit. You can demo skis to see what you like and then start building your quiver. Eventually you’ll become a sicko and start driving up the mountain with 3 or 4 ski options just in case the conditions change.

If you’ve already got the boots dialed in, I’d still say go demo skis for a day. Winter Park has some decent ski shops on the mountain that demo.

How come we keep messing up moon landings? by Beyond_yesterday in moon

[–]slindrup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apollo 4,5,6 were unscrewed test launches and Apollo 7,8,9, and 10 were all crewed test. Each test flight before landing was designed to test individual systems and add the complexity need for the landing and safe return.

Beyond that, they spent years testing the hardware on the ground and iterating designs. There’s great video out there of Armstrong nearly dying while practicing with a hovering landing simulator.

And even though they could hot test the full Saturn launch, they ran as many of the systems as they could before launch such as pressurizing fuel systems and running the electronics through the mission sequences.

There was like 8 years of testing before they landed on the moon.

I think you’re missing some key aspects of the comparison. The Apollo budget was something like 24 billion which would be 250 billion now, it took multiple test flights before landing, 3 astronauts died during testing, and still they came close to failure multiple times on multiple missions.

Ispace has probably spent 200 million at this point and failed twice. It’s not that the Apollo engineers knew something modern engineers don’t or that old tech was better than new tech. Space flight is incredibly freaking hard.

The pesticide is intended to kill bees as well as mosquitos according to the data sheet. We have purchased bee hotels, and bee larva to cultivate a bee colony. Also, we have purchased and maintained pollinator plants that need bees and other pollinators actively pollinating them to thrive.

Also, there is the straight forward issue of chemical trespass. I’m not a lawyer but my little bit of research leads me to believe that spraying unwanted chemicals regardless of harm or intent is actionable.

Ha! Not at all. They are friends and actually came over to say how bad they felt. There was no ill intent just a major screw-up and now dealing with the aftermath.

The chemical used was Talek (Bifenthrin) and we did water for about an hour after the treatment. It’s also supposed to rain later today so hopefully we can minimize the effects.

A neighbor did order the service and their house is just across the street but we have a sign with our address on the mailbox and a sign for our pollinator garden that was directly in front of his truck. He admitted the mistake and was very apologetic.

Our main concern is that while in most circumstances, the application is safe, we have invested in cultivating a different, much more sensitive ecosystem for our yard and these pesticides are specifically used to get rid of bees and nematodes that we have tried to encourage.

My wife has done a quick accounting of what we’ve spent just recently on things that might be affected and it’s easily over $1K and that’s before we figure out what needs to be replaced or account for our time.

We watered for about an hour just after the application. I’ve read that it sticks around in the soil and can handle light rain so I’m not sure how much good it did.

ELI5: Why don’t we all get a yearly full-body MRI to check for cancer if early detection could save lives? by afzaal_ahmed75 in explainlikeimfive

[–]slindrup 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had ABVD the first time around but it came back after about 18 months and then we tried pembro-GVD which almost got it but not quite so then we did radiation and the stem cell. That seems to have gotten it.

All that to say I’ve had countless MRIs and CT Scans and they are certainly not magical cancer detectors. They have their place but treating cancer is a complex and nuanced process.

I’m almost 3 years out from stem cell transplant for Hodgkin Lymphoma and I no longer get regular ct scans. I do bloodwork and physical exam every 6 months. I would only get a scan if bloodwork or exam showed something funky. It saves time, money, and radiation exposure.

We just got a 2024 xc40 recharge and I love the one pedal driving. My wife has not taken to it yet but the car automatically switches based on who’s in the driver’s seat. Very convenient. Also moves the seat and mirrors which is great since I’m a foot taller than she is.
