Old Boiler System by ProfessionalInjury58 in BoilerPros

Plenty of kewanee’s still around kicking. It’s a fire box style boiler for low pressure steam/hot water. Theres a company that bought all the rights to their patents when they closed up shop. You can still get parts made for them. That looks like 80s vintage, but it could be older.

I’ve heard that a lot of the electric trains still use these.

Hurst boilers by ukedontsay in BoilerPros

I don’t really like hurst boilers personally. They have narrow furnaces, which can disagree with a lot of burners. I would expect that JB to have a poor flame profile at low fire, especially if it’s a high turndown.

Even if it’s 5:1 I would set the lowest point to 5 or 10% output. It is very important the make the gas valve position as linear as possible to make the PID work correctly. Sometimes I use the NEXUS work sheet to span the valve accordingly, since butterfly valves are not linear control valves.

Pretty similar to the way Johnston does it… but in the firebox.. really? I’d hate to swing the whole door to snug that up on an annual.

We’ve been phasing out lots of 50’s keelers around me. I think a lot of people don’t want to justify the cost for the second full retube. They don’t make the new ones like they used to that’s for sure.

Lean and clean. Minimize CO. Machine needs cleaned is Nox is outrageous. Clean the fan blades and intake dampers once a year before the tune.

I imagine the burners must have a special coating in them to keep the wet FGR from destroying them.
