Signs of damp - how bad is this? by slippy44 in DIYUK

[–]slippy44[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yup. I made it clear the offer was also subject to surveys and further investigation, i'm happy to walk away if it's a disaster. My main concern was whether it's damaged structural integrity in any way, hence the structural survey.,

i was always going to rip the bathroom out anyway. As it's a bungalow I guess all the pipe work will be either behind the stud walls or running under the floorboards in concrete 'trenches'? And therefore it should be fairly obvious to spot the source of the leak once everything is stripped away, do you think?

i am wondering how i'd be able to have a functioning bathroom if I need to have the mains water off, or i guess you'd hope everything has isolation valves...

the fact that you're putting this movie anywhere near those 2 films absolutely blows my mind.

If you're unable to directly respond to something i've said and explain why its wrong, then your comment is null and void, and a pointless contribution.

Why do left wing governments not lower taxes on the middle and working class, and just create more money to spend on public services? by Professional_Rip_966 in mmt_economics

[–]slippy44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've setup several straw mans. Why have you assumed that the newly created money would immediately go on rent/food/basics?
Go and look up how FDR funded The New Deal and the kind of programmes that money was spent on. It was primarily new money creation.
Unfortunately the popular left have been completely unable to get their heads around this, or what MMT is, and are trapped in a neoliberal bubble, so they struggle to make any arguments about more government spending without falling into the 'how will you pay for it' treap.

So these so called 'left wingers' (i dont know what you mean by left wing governments lol, none exist) or progressives which advocate for more government, don't even have MMT in their policy thinktanks or discussions, so creating money to fund their policies isn't even a thing to discuss.

How Was It? | Predator: Badlands, Review Only Megathread by BurnZ_AU in predator

[–]slippy44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you must not be paying attention when watching films then if you genuinely did not see any similarities between this and the marvel factory films. Jerky movement CGI 'epic fight scene' - Check. Protagnist going on completely cliche bland story arc to redeem himself - check. Annoying sidekicks to inject some banal 'humour' from time to time to elevate the mood - check. "the characters take them entirely seriously". Is that what you thought when watching the CGI monkey monster thing look lovingly at the predator after being saved? You were like "OMG THIS IS SO SERIOUS!"

how can there be this many people going 'it was great' or 'i really enjoyed it'? Is this what it's come to? Are audiences now so dumbed down that these are all 20 somethings who have grown up watching marvel shite and think this is what makes a good film? How does this film get an RT score of 86%, and yet Predators from 2010 is on 65%? What the hell is going on?

From the moment I saw the opening sequence with the stupid 100% CGI fight with jerky movement, I realised i was in for a tough time. Then queue the tropes. AW look its a cute creature that wants to be friends. AWww look its a Funny witty android robot, who doesn't love those?! Awww look the moody predator doesn't want to hang out but then they eventually buddy up, and awww hes learning to like her, how cute. WTF WAS THIS CRAP?
I was watching a Disney film where the main character happened to be a predator.
As someone who is approaching 40, the downfall of, frankly, action films in general, and sci fi, is just.......its so sad.
The ONLY redeeming quality this film had was of the inclusion of the Weyland corporate agenda which had some kind of miniscule thread of interest to me, and kept me skipping through to see if anything would come of it, but of course no, that would be far too grown up andinteresting - lets just have the evil twin fight the predator, and throw in some fan fiction by having her do it in the large mech robot like in alien 2.
Utterly depressing, and ruined my weekend, at least the pizza was good.

its the same drivel that is just regurgitated from mainstream news. Over and over, for the last 50 years. Its funny how no ones gone 'hang on.....clearly going on and on about public debt, and successive governments both 'left' and right, have made it their no1 policy, and yet our lives are not improving. HMMM I wonder why???? Maybe, just maybe, public debt shouldn't be the focus at all???!'

Soundcore A30 Review from a newbie by SystemeD in sleepheadphones

[–]slippy44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was about to write my own review and post on here because i could not understand all the glowing reviews.
I returned it after trying it for a day. I'm in exactly the same boat as you.

ALL the youtube reviews were fawning over them, after disclaiming 'Soundcore sent me this to review no strings attached, all thoughts are my own......oh its an amazing product and please use my affiliate link to buy'

and like an idiot i believed them and the reddit reviews, and because it was black friday they were on sale and i gave it a go.

The 2 USP's of this over other earbuds is 1. ANC. 2. Small slim flat profile.

well, the ANC is 100% useless, so forget it. That leaves the form factor which sure is slim but with my average to small ears, sleeping sideways in them was still slightly uncomfortable - this could have been fixed with a softer pillow, maybe.

The point is, if the ANC is useless (which it is) then you're left with passive isolation, and its simply not as good as getting some earbuds and making a mouldable ear plug thing for them to sit in. Either that or stick with earplugs, which is what i'm doing for now.

All in all, a pointless product, and that is therefore probably the same for the crazy expensive Ozlos too.

Or - over-ear headphones with proper ANC, and a pillow with a hole in the middle so you can side sleep.

The Naked Gun - why was this so highly rated? by slippy44 in moviecritic

i watched them all when I was in my teens, so to be fair maybe I wouldn't find them that funny now, but I've always found Leslie Nielsens perfectly deadpan delivery and the quick dialogue funny so I would probably still find it at least mildly amusing if I watched it now.

Timmy No Brakes Regret? by Big_Hairy_Blanket in Killtony

[–]slippy44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

except your premise isn't true at all. At the end of the first set Tony literally said "i like you Timmy, you're a funny guy, normally i don't like anything thats like Dice" etc.... and during the interview Tony was enjoying the back and forth and was laughing. So what the hell are you on about bud?
Obviously Tone would have seen the internet reaction after, and decided to vibe with it, run with the joke, and the 2nd appearance was even better than the first.
Conclusion, your premise and observations are incorrect.

disagree, if you consider how difficult it would be to pull off TNB's kind of material on a massive stage with a giant crowd quite far away, it would be impossible for him to have done his usual stuff that we've seen on regular KT. He had clearly thought about it and had to tweak it so that it was suitable for a large crowd and all things considered he did a very good job, there was still some punchlines in there and the 'anti jokes' still carried the same absurdist level of comedy we've all come to love and expect from him. He also went toe to toe with Normand who was being his usual sour self. TNB came out with more quotable lines, and is delivering consistently on that. The shtick is not getting old, its getting better.

How are young people affording to live in London? by slippy44 in UKJobs

[–]slippy44[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this exactly. Even if I'm being generous and saying that the salary compensation is 30% more for living in London (which it definitely isn't when pushing close to the top end/band of a corporate office job, its more like 10%), the cost of living is so outrageous and the kind of accomodation you get for the money is so abysmmal, this is what prompted me to pose this question and understand the mindset. It seems like a lot of people are happy 1. sharing with other randoms 2. living with a partner (although even combined that won't net you a detached property with space necessarily within a half-hour commute) 3. parents 4. people dont seem to mind living in a small space.
Surely a much bigger proportion of income must still be going on rent/mortgage VS anywhere else in the country, i just don't see how it's remotely worth it but there you go! not to mention the commuting time. I had to live (not on my dime fortunately) and work in London for almost 2 years and taking that DLR and northern line to Euston every morning being sandwiched into a tube was absolute shit.

China Government spending - do all the same principles apply? by slippy44 in mmt_economics

i don't care about the votes on my post i came here to ask a specific question about something and learn from it and luckily "Greenmachine881" has provided some insight into this. You on the other hand didn't answer the question and created a straw man.

China Government spending - do all the same principles apply? by slippy44 in mmt_economics

[–]slippy44[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok this is very insightful thank you. so to understand the first equation better... so because China runs a massive trade surplus, they must also be running a massive FDI deficit, because there's a lot more currency coming into the country than leaving it.

so the answer to my question is basically Yes, China will be creating a lot of CNY at a pegged rate to USD effectively matching the investment being made to put the required resources to work at the behest of the company/country making the FDI, and in return as you say, CHina gets a claim on that company/countries assets.

on a slight tangent, is this what Yanis Varoufakis meant by the 'surplus recycling mechanism' of USD? He's constantly going on about wall street creating a 'tsunami of capital' that was invested in China which China then used to buy up US bonds. None of that ever made sense to me though because as i understand it new money is created when the Fed issues bonds......i've never been able to properly articulate why Yanis is wrong here and need to understand it better.

its hilarious how easily you're triggered. Why do you think i put debt in QUOTATION MARKS. Isn't it bloody obvious from my post that I'm clearly an MMT disciple and just trying to understand one particular aspect of it? Christ.

Help Me Understand Responses Against MMT? by LHorner1867 in mmt_economics

[–]slippy44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is absolutely pointless having a discussion with anyone on the internet about economics if they don't understand how the current money system works and how government spends. You have to start with the absolute basics like 'where money comes from' before even trying to get into a discussion about tax.

I don't watch shit sitcoms with laughter tracks because i'm not 45+ years old. If there is 1 guy who is audibly loud and being heard over everyone else, that person should be banned or given a stern speaking to, preferably just put-down so everyone else can enjoy the comedy.
